Rules of engagement:

Why are we trading pick 9 for a future first round ?

Terrible draft and F1 means we can trade for a mid next year.

If you believe all the talk about how weak this draft is then that pick would get a player as good or better in the 2026 draft. And that's if Pies back it up again and finish top 4. They could easily go off a cliff with so many older guys in key roles.

Remember when they knocked back two firsts (Pick 9 via Papley and F1) for Daniher? Championed it as a massive win, a new era of tough Essendon. To make matters worse, Sydney bombed the next year so they could have gotten Pick 3.

Then they get Pick 8 compensation (thanks AFL, Brisbane totally didn't add a sneaky two years on less coin after) and selected a spud.

I suspect it will be much the same.

You're forgetting that the pick they got for Daniher was in the worst draft ever, as were the two picks they didnt hand over for Dunkley!!!

That could be two top 5 picks plus ours next season. Would be impressive if that could get done.

The one variable that’s so hard to account for is the quality of the draft. Even the professionals consistently get the talent wrong. We as supporters would have no clue whatsoever if the poor draft thing is real or just a hysteria. I’m sure there have been plenty of “bad drafts” that ended up being pretty good (and vice versa)

I don't think this is just a bad draft.

It's been unanimously viewed as one of the worst this century.

There'll be a few gems but it's certainly the least exciting draft I can remember in a long time.

Essendon fans won’t be angry, they spend their time deluding themselves into thinking that they’re a great football club.

To them this isn’t failure to secure picks for a player who doesn’t want to be there, this is a shot in the arm for how they look to the rest of the competition, because that’s all they have.

The same delusion that ran through their supporter base when they told themselves “we don’t know what anyone took, but we know it was all safe and legal” will now take the form of “we’ve shown the comp we won’t be pushed around”… I mean, their presidents call to arms was about having swagger… not winning games, not winning premierships, not being successful…. Just well, errr looking tough.

AFL too busy investing in QLD. They have forgotten where they have come from. All areas need the youth to be supported by the AFL.

The effort the AFL put into our youth will reap enough rewards at AFL level to make it all worth it!

Agree with this actually. Essendon are stacked this year with picks. Think it was said that Essendon want a first rounder from a bottom six club. Is Essendon banking on a Collingwood death ride hence the talk of Collingwood and hawthorn doing a pick swap. Pick 9 for Collingwood future first. Who else from bottom six would want 9 this year?
