The key is making sure our mids look for Kemp if the other two are getting double teamed or not in the best position.

For so long the old bomb it long to Charlie or Harry has been the go
How much has the bombing been because of the lack of movement in the forward line? It didn’t start becoming an issue last season until Charlie hurt his ankle

Death, taxes, and Carlton bombing it in the forward line.

In all seriousness, someone like Kemp could/should flourish as the 3rd banana.

He'd possibly kick more goals playing WITH Charlie and Harry up front, than he would playing without them.

Give him the third best defender, instead of the best. Make teams stress about/double-team Charlie and Harry and watch Kemp get off the chain.

Possibly the less of focus he is up forward, the better he will perform...
Plus having the ability to play a negating role on someone like Andrews, Wilkie, Moore, Himmelberg, Big Gov, etc if they're freely intercepting and rebounding

Clearly helped us then. We were getting massive scores in that stretch. The issue must be something else then?
It's been our huge inconsistency swings over the last 2 years that have concerned me. It's definitely more than just the forward entries.

But what?(and I don't accept injuries)

Voss has had a very strong playing list, unlike our previous couple of coaches.

Problem is that as c/- H, Kempy is a KPF down at training ATM due CC’s absence.

Def will want to be 3rd target, more so for the benefit of him playing the mobile vs KPP role. Should really be rolling between the goal-line up to the wing (& all areas in between) for his lead up marking capabilities and advantage.

Kemp is going to be super important.

Has the endurance to play high half forward. Think Cottrell's role but with more talent and footy IQ so gets the ball more.

Can play lead up CHF and did at the end of last year.

He can also play deep and play out of the goalsquare.

He als gives us a second tall target when the ruck is off the ground.

His forward role will vary a lot if we use him right and get the most out of him. Should be super important to our improved forward structure which includes more aerial targets and is less predictable.

He was on the radio this afternoon, spoke about how he’s playing as a defensive forward on Weiters at training. Working on the role for himself, but also Weiters working on how to play through some attention himself.

Good scenario stuff, there is no doubt that there will be times he plays this role.

I see Kemp as a utility inside our forward 50, will play a whole heap of different roles.

One of last season’s greatest frustrations was that we didn’t see our key forwards lead up at the ball enough.

I’m Charlie’s biggest fan but he got into a habit of engaging his opponent, standing there and pointing to where he wanted the ball kicked. Would love to see him more on the move when we have it forward of centre.

I think Kempy is a more natural lead up at the footy type. Excited to see how he goes up there.

This is all just nonsensical hyperbole and hope.

Showed some signs last year vs terrible opposition but got spanked the weeks after vs the Saints and Brisbane.

I'm looking forward to seeing him in action up fwd this year, but let's wait until he's actually performed in the role before saying he can essentially do it all.

He didn't get spanked against the Saints and we hardly got the ball into our forward line against Brisbane.

I think he will be fine.

Bombing it in happens when you have only two forwards who are strong overhead and hunt the ball in the air. The rest being makeshift forwards who lack those forward instincts, aren't strong overhead and don't hunt the ball in the air, just sit back around the two talls and wait for the ball to come in, generating congestion more than anything.

We need to fix this and I think we will. Just look how Brisbane smashed us in the air, not from their FF and CHF who are both pretty good players but their forward flanks and pockets who are strong overhead.
Add Kemp and Moir who have good overhead games and we all of a sudden have more than two options to kick to going forward.

This will quicken the ball movement up and avoid intercepting players and congestion. Should help shift the congestion away from our two big key talls as well. We should be able to go through our flanks and pockets better if they chose to crowd our key talls, if they don't our key talls will get some extra space.

More targets forward of the ball, we won't have to bomb it in so looking forward to this.

Seven touches and one goal against the Saints would suggest that he was average at best.

Let's be honest, he's played one half decent game up forward against really poor opposition. However he will have more opportunities to impress as 3rd tall forward whereas previously he was being asked to be a key.

Comes in with no runs on the board up forward but with a clean slate.

For this watching training and following the pre season closely, if you had to say who was ahead out of Phillips or DGB, who would you say?

I know it’s hard but based purely on who seems to be ahead based on pre season form

Spot on…
It’s been a general problem for multiple years and array of different reasons, mainly players bombing long to both Harry and Charlie in general whether they’re the right choice or not, teammates being ignored whom are in a better position, basic poor execution, generally poor use of space in I50- poor leading patterns, spreading the load between our forwards no matter what level the player is…

It’s our choices when we’re not under extreme pressure or in the clear to impact when having the opportunity which lets us down, our mid and forward half connections need to raise the bar to another level…

Think you’ll find part of our player management revolves around avoiding paying mid-tier player money for mid-tier output. That and Owies had some capital attached = J.Smith.

Off the books with DC, Marchbank, Martin, MK & Owies to assist and bring in draftee$ to go along with some top-heavy contracts + TDK to go.
He was unlucky that he was the one out of contract and Williams was pushed out of the backline. You may be right in general about the wages, but that is what I was told by the man himself. He wasn't getting a contract.

Every single side bombs it long when under pressure

Interestingly, in 2024 we were ranked 1st for goals per inside 50, so perhaps bombing long more often is a reasonable strategy
Bombing in long can be a good strategy especially if a deep entry and not a shallow entry as the team know where the ball is going and the smalls can get to the feet of the pack and pressure any rebounds which in turn helps with repeat entries as the backs and midfield can lock in from half forward and wings. But the smalls need to be very good at pressure or kick snaps more often our smalls have not been great at either.

I can understand the frustration with bombing in long but if the team is set up for it, it can work and did for long periods. The best strategy is use both long kicks deep and short kicks to a player in space.

Wonder if Kemp could play the part time ruck as JSOS did, would add a string to his bow and allow H to stay forward when TDK is off having a rest.
