Austin would work closely with Voss on the type of players they want for holes on the list and or the game style
Fair enough.

But Voss has one the leagues best playing lists at his disposal, and our 3 year form could only be described as an absolute roller coaster.
His main responsibility is to keep the team performing at a consistent level, which I think he's very much still learning the ropes despite being hired as a coach without training wheels.

Maybe 2025 is his and Carlton's year.šŸ¤ž

The list has progressively improved over the last 3 years, in talent, maturity and with moving on a number of injury prone, hopefully continuity

We need to nail one in the next 3 years, but it's tracking well beyond that period

Any intel on who we will take with the last list spot? Or will we just leave it free for the MSD?

Loving the fact that we are likely to name an SSP addition today, and I am not overly concerned.

The redeployment of Silvagni down back, along with the addition of O’Farrell to develop largely alleviates the need for a depth option to be added. We already have Young who is capable, as well as Kemp who can go back if needed. Blokes like Lemmey and O’Keeffe are nit beyond playing a role as they approach maturity and we have Duffy to develop behind the ball in the twos. We have already signed Phillips for the VFL, do we need to add him to the top squad? Grainger-Barras seems less likely to me with the other third tall options we have and the lack of notoriety around his pre season.

Forward is interesting. Harry and Charlie are staples for the duration of their extended contracts. Support can come from TDK if we chose the two ruck model, even a developing O’Keeffe potentially impacts in that space. Lemmey is young, but has taken a huge step forward this off season and is now entering discussions for a debut. Lem also offers an option as a ruck chop out. Kemp is going to contribute as a third tall and will be expected to somewhat mimic JSOS offering that extra forward pressure. Moir becomes a third tall option as well, then JSOS and McGovern are options if needed.

Having developmental key forwards is going to become essential in coming years, but a waste if spots if they just sit on the list for five years with little or no game time. That sort of player becomes a real flight risk if offered real opportunity elsewhere. Can we keep a player like Lemmey if senior games do not become available regardless of performance in the seconds. We absolutely need at least one ready to go player as Charlie and Harry move in to their thirties.

Initially I thought McMahon was a no brainer given the uncertainty of Lemmey making the grade. Does he become less of a need with a Lemmey seemingly stepping up? Face value suggests no, but perhaps it is the opposite. If Lemmey proves himself AFL quality but stays in the twos, he will almost certainly find another home (back is SA, most likely), so having another young(ish) key forward like McMahon would be a godsend. Damned if we do, damned if we don’t situation.

Then there are the small forward options for mine led by Will White, who has had an impressive pre season. Is it a need? Reports have Fantasia tearing up the pre season along with Motlop, Williams, Fogarty, Durdin and Cottrell who is often forgotten in small forward conversations. White is impressive and will continue to improve. A real option, or overkill?
(Sorry Frankie, hard to enthuse over a third club option).

I am not dramatically invested in the decision. Given my ā€œlimitedā€ access to the inner sanctum it is hard to completely back any ā€œhorseā€ in this race. I have high regard for McMahon and White from their reserves impact and probably lean to them. There is also an arguments that we would be better served with a mature midfield option to team with our developing mids. Does Dom Brew enter the discussion after being overlooked by the Dogs?

Hopefully we know the selection by close of business?

Recall Evans being a huge whipping boy for Port fans, interesting move if that's what eventuates.
Agree would be a strange choice with Motlop & Durdin & Fantasia likely to be in front of him.
We seem more vulnerable in the event of injuries to key position stocks hence McMahon or Phillips seem more logical.
Lose a Weitering or Curnow and we are in trouble.

Fair assessment.

The only thing I'll add is that all our small forwards overall to this point haven't delivered and their bodies have let them down.

We had only 1 of them played more than 15 games last year. Zac Williams, who isn't a forward by trade anyway.

Agree whilst our small forwards have underperformed l would back Motlop & Durdin in this year and further assess, certainly don't see Evans ahead of 3-4 in that role this year.

From what I have seen, heard and read, it is a race in two.

McMahon or White.

Happy with either.

McMahon great insurance for Charlie and Harry, albeit Lemmey is developing nicely in his third season.

White developing rapidly, has speed, endurance and goal sense, and is tearing up the track in preseason.

Both performed brilliantly in the VFL last year.

Not going to cry too much about it but there's no way I'd be taking Evans over White on what I've seen.

Same. If true maybe they are looking more for defence. Both Evans and White have had runs off HB during pre season. I see Evans very much as a role player. Just my take

As I said before McMahon or Phillips haven't been that impressive so not surprised they may miss out

Possibly. WW would struggle with actual defensive work at AFL level given his size and strength so perhaps with Newman and Cincotta out for extended periods they're looking at that. I still think in terms of upside Evans is considerably below what WW could give us. Always found his kicking and ability to get separation very ordinary.

I though White was very strong and a bit of a tackling machine. His pace helps. Doesn't lack strength or effort IMO

I see some upside in White. I see just a role player in Evans that has limitations but he has been okay off HB.

TBH none of the players I have seen trialled have excited me over the pre season and I just see depth options at best. My gut feel is we may have looked elsewhere

PS The one thing I will say about Evans is he can actually use the ball well by foot so maybe that is what we need?

Evans is more in the Fogarty/Cottrell mould. Defensive type. If JSOS has been as good in defense as other suggest, then I get why DGB and Philips aren’t getting picked up. McMahon has been average from what I’ve heard, and guys like Lemmey and HOK have been great this pre season

I'd still go Phillips, McMahon in that order

White and Evans could break into the side and or as cover as forwards, but I think we have plenty of options in that area

No interest in DGB

Yup. CHB & CHF. These are the areas we need coverage in.

As much as I like the sound of White, McMahon is my preference.

We need to prepare for life without Tom. My mail is 100% gone to Saints as he chases the dollar and SOS is all over him.

He can **** off for all i care if he doesn’t want to commit and history shows they rarely sign on when the contracts are always put on hold. If he wanted to stay he would of been locked in already.
1. It's show business not show friends. Let him set himself up, his family and his future family up. Not a crime and not morally wrong.
2. History doesn't show that...

And from a fan perspective There's good in either option. St Kilda bone themselves and we have cap room and some fun with it. Or we keep tom and St Kilda bone themselves in a different way. šŸ‘. Life is good

Not what I’ve heard.

Re TDK contract

I tend to follow the ā€œbird in the hand is worth more than two in the bushā€

I do recognise however that TDK value is still based a bit on potential, but a mobile ruck who can clunk a mark and kick a goal who is not a waste when it hits the ground - that is someone we need to retain

Sure we can’t throw $1.5m a season at him but $1m a year seems fair
I suspect we had to keep Pittonet on an average salary ($500k) until TDK commits
It probably leads to us to losing Pittonet and a best 22 player like Williams and a fringe player like Cottrell
Maybe we can fit in TDK but Walsh also needs to be paid so we would be naive in thinking keeping TDK at $1m won’t have ramifications

Option 1 - Retain TDK
TDK $1.1m
2nd Rd Draftee. $100k
3rd Rd Draftee. $100k
Low draftee. $100k

Option 2 - let TDK go
Pittonet (comp =2nd Rd) $500k
Williams (3rd Rd) $500k
Cottrell. $300k
Pick 10-18. $100k

I am okay with paying TDK, I am keen to back in the King - he could be a game changer and get us a flag in the next few years (as a key part of puzzle) but also think:
  • Pittonet backup could be given to HOK if they think he is coming along
  • Williams is a loss but I think we could replace him with another small forward or resting mid
  • Cottrell or similar below average payments will move on every season and replaced with draftees - that’s BAU

Cap space has already been addressed to cater for TDKs contract, when we released Kennedy, Owies, Marchbank, Martin, Cuners, Carroll and drafted kids with Haynes
