Ok IF we lose Harry, who do we use next year?

TDK may or may not be gone. If TDK is gone then Harry could be used as our replacement ruck in rotation with Skull

That leaves Lemmey as our sole replacement forward.
We do have Pitto and Skull as further talls but if Pitto wants to survive then he needs to spend time as a pure forward in the Ressies. He needs to add another string to his bow. (if not forward then defense).

What about a smaller forward setup based on Curnow, McGovern and Kemp. Bring Lemmey in for 3 -4 game stints.

The issue is our drafting and especially trade period/ free agency
Every year you need to bring in Best 23 players from other clubs through trade and free agency. Draft correctly.
We have only bought in ELJIAH hollands who has his issues and Nick Haynes

Adelaide brings in Rankine , Dawson,
Neal Bullen , Cummings , peatling etc

Hawks bring in battle , barrass , Mabio chol,
Massimo , ginnivan , chol and Gunston back

Gold Coast have improved bringing in Rioli and noble.

Every year you need to keep bringing in ready made talent from other clubs. That can contribute to best 23.

We have done the opposite and it is costing us now.
You either keep evolving or get left behind .

TDK but I believe he will go which we will get a good draft pick and open up massive salary cap. To bring trade targets as above.

Riley Obrien, Liam Ryan , Malcom Rosa’s , Leek , miles Bergman, Lloyd and florent would be good starting base

I’d be happy to trade, delist or move on anyone not in the above don’t touch list

I can't see the logic in trading out Harry unless there are issues beyond what we already know.
If we were to cash in on any of our 'stars', Charlie would be the most dispensable.

BTW

your avatar always trips me up ;)

Pick 5 (Swans first pick) + 2026 second (points for Cody) + Florent for McKay would be fine.

The question remains:

1. Do need to lose Harry in order to keep TDK?
2. Given Charlie’s output .. can we afford to lose Harry?
Happy to keep Curnow if we could get a workhorse type CHF.

Looks like we have found our 3rd tall forward in McGovern who has been the only positive recently.

Let’s not overstate Harry McKay’s absence, it wouldn’t leave an unfillable gap.

Statistically, our forward line ranks among the league’s worst for converting inside 50s into scores.

The McKay/Curnow combination has rarely delivered consistent results, and the modern game demands a more diverse set of scoring options rather than relying on two $1M+ key forwards.

In reality, someone like Tim Membrey, who was available as a delisted free agent, would have offered Carlton a greater output in 2025.

I'd be happy with letting TDK go for cap space and a high draft pick if we could combine Riley Flynn(22years early '26, big unit), HOK(21 years, KPF material, agro approach) with Pitto(experienced backup and will be needed)
Use the TDK pick/salary on 1 or 2 fast skilled ball movers or a dangerous young Xfactor forward.

Flynn Young and a slow developing Moir might be the forward?

What do we need, speed and kicking skills off the half back line? Speed and disposal through the midfield? Reliable small and mid sized forwards, plus a tall forward and, or, ruck in the event one of our keys or TDK leaves?

Options include:

  • Nasaih Wanganeen Milera is an utter freak and would be perfect for us, currently out of contract, not a free agent so would take a big trade. Would only be an option if we were to lose a multi-million player like TDK, Walsh and or Harry / Charlie.
  • Ed Richards is currently a RFA, while I assume he will re-sign, he would be a perfect addition to the midfield - only possible to acquire with salary cap if we were to lose a $1m player like TDK, Walsh or Harry/Charlie.
  • Bailey Fritsch has already been linked to us as a 'pre-agent' mid sized forward.
  • Zac Bailey at Brisbane is a 'pre-agent', contracted for one more year and available for FA next year. Would need a trade, but is a handy mid-forward player.
  • Conor MacDonald is consistently played out of position at Hawthorn, wouldn't suit an absolute need but may be a player that could be prized out.
  • Josh Fahey at GWS is a free agent, potential cheap pick stuck behind Whitfield / Ash at GWS has decent speed and disposal.
  • Archie Roberts at Essendon has some capabilities at half back, contracted for one more year.
  • Nick Bryan at Essendon currently doesn't have a contract, but could be a replacement TDK option. Although Essendon are fans of him.

It's honestly really hard to find the things we need - speed, good disposal, in the trade market.

Need to hope that some of the player we've drafted recently step into those roles.

Got a time machine handy? That's the only way we're getting these two...

Instead, we gave pick 6 for Cerra and we spent pick 10 on LOB instead of Richards...

I think we're beyond chasing ready made players now. We need to draft a strong core group and build them up in the next 5 years or so.

Never have a small number of list decisions been so pivotal for a club.

We have a model with half a dozen (or more) premium contracts dominating our salary cap as well as a couple of other significant ones not too far behind. Then I count 16+ who would be on little more than minimum chips along with some other budget contracts.

I believe if we keep Tom, it will likely mean other players who are potentially as important are traded for both salary cap and draft capital. So many posters coveting this player and that player from opposition teams are oblivious to the real state of play. Similarly the likes of Jagga Smith, HOF, HOK, Ollie, Cowan, and a couple of others are going to need upgrades in the foreseeable future when they receive offers from around the competition.

I like TDK, a lot, but he is not a million dollar player by performance, only by hype. If we are forced to outlay more than a million a season to keep him, we are overpaying. If the Saints or anyone else wants to throw speculative money at him, we need to hold fast.

I really like the potential of Flynn Riley and am a little disappointed we didn’t take the opportunity to add him at the mid season draft. Hudson O’Keeffe is a banker with the unfortunate rider that he has been prone to soft tissue ailments and needs some serious attention from one of the global hamstring gurus to consolidate his future. Pitto remains an excellent foot soldier with great intent, but again a body prone to injury. A combination of the three along with Harry McKay, L.Young and perhaps Lemmey would leave us competitive. Perhaps the optics stopped us drafting Riley at the MSD.

I am not a fan of calls to trade our other big ticket items, particularly Harry. The only one outside of TDK who should come under scrutiny is Walshy in terms of value against return. His injuries have dulled his output, as has the game plan. Which is the bigger contributor is for smarter heads than me closer to the action to assess. His injury prognosis is critical. We need to be able to all but guarantee a return to his best if his next contract is to match or exceed his current one.

We need to change up our midfield either subtly or perhaps more dramatically. We should be able to bank on big input from Jagga next year and Walker the following year. Players like Lord, the Hollands boys, the Camporeale boys and perhaps a couple more who could be redeployed (Kemp, Cowan, Moir) also have the scope for a big say in our future. Peak Walsh is a genuine star, we need to critically assess if that player still exists.

Wright is a very astute operator, but I can’t see him throwing out the baby with the bath water so to speak. The biggest issue is getting a viable coaching group to refocus the playing group and “add some layers” to our “game plan”. I really hope Wright has the acumen and foresight to read our group and issues along with the contacts and credentials to recognise AND attract the personnel we need.

For a late 2nd/early third you don't think Florent would be an improvement on our current half back stocks?

Saad 32 next year, Docherty probably gone, Newman 33
Florent would be a short term upgrade for sure, but I am not convinced long term that he is a better option than our developing half back/wing options.

I don’t believe our salary cap situation justifies an investment there over patience and development. I am on board for a small forward option if a viable one could be shaken loose. We have too many solid workers and nit enough x-factor in that part of the ground.
