2025 List Management Discussion - Part 5

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Lyon is an autocrat. No point in paying someone to get told what to do I guess. He's been handed everything he could ask for and it's his balls on the line if it falls over. Might as well let him have the leash and see how he goes.

Random thoughts.

Hawthorn, our stalkers got nothing, they’re actually weaker without worpel, big tick.

The entitled, pampered cotton on outfit landed worpel but failed in their bid for Marshall. Maybe Essendon and St Kilda have reversed the trend but I doubt it, they’ll just move on. Still a year without addressing pressing needs will hurt them both, good.

Our mates out at the western oval also failed to bring in a key defender and copped a lesson from the saints team, that gives me a warm glow.

I don’t care what the press think, as far as I’m concerned we’re big winners.

I find it interesting how the press frame trades and trade rumours based on bias more than analysis. Together with the behaviour of teams like hawthorn and some managers the afl have plenty to think about.

Honestly feels like this was mostly happening anyway (not to sell Misson short or anything) but were Ross' club doing it Ross' way anyway?

I have a feeling that Ross can do this because he is handing more day to day coaching responsibility to the assistant coaches, in particular Boris. I'm sure everyone noticed he mentioned Boris at the end of the presser yesterday. Ross maybe Augustus Caesar now, but the heir to the Empire will be Boris.

lol you couldn't make this shit up. The pathetically unserious Bulldogs, after embarrassing themselves by Beveridge forcing the List Manager to make a completely unrealistic and amateur play for Wilkie because he had he is nose out of joint about being cucked on JSOS, went and did the exact same thing to Adelaide trying to make a play for Mark Keane because Adelaid had enquired about Sanders. :D :D
What a clueless outfit they are. Like Wilkie, Keane has now extended at Adelaide until 2028 because he wanted nothing to do with a club that is run by the coach and throws out offers like confetti.

they did get a 175cm, 75kg key back though :D:D:D:D

Lets face it, circumstances changed once we landed JSOS.

The excuse of not agreeing with GWS, was just that, an excuse.

In the washup we made a mistake in committing to Aleer. the fact that we rectified that mistake would detract from the media pile on as Dilena described it.

Well we cop that on the chin as a result of a mistake, too bad, Aleer is contracted, we move on. As far as mistakes go, it is small beer in comparison to McCartin, Nettlefield losing Lyon, Richardson, re signing Ratten then sacking him 6 months later etc etc etc.

In the big scheme
TDK
JSOS
Ryan
Flanders

re siging
NAZ
Wilkie
WIndhager

keeping
Marshall

If at the beginning say the NAZ resigning that we would do the above but cope some flak for not taking Aleer, I would take that and run.
It is amusing all our recruiting and retentions wins are being minimised because of the Aleer situation. Ralph, Barret, Cleary and Jenkins are a broken record about our war crime against Aleer and our holding Marshall ‘against his will’. Yet not a mention of how respectful and efficient we were in getting the rest of our deals done.

I also haven’t heard anyone discussing the Liam Ryan acquisition mention the guy had been all Australian.

Mackie on now.

Excuse, excuse, excuse. Not through lack of trying :D:D

He reckons 40, F1 and some shit a good deal :D:D.

Mackie, just wait a second while I suck myself off. What a w***er.
Self obsessed entitled prick. Actually thinks that cos Ro wanted to go, it just has to be done and we played games. We were always a no, but left the door open out of respect. They disrespected us and Ro, so we said just **** off

Pick 19, ****ing lol

I have been dead against it for months, but JUH for $250k base and pick 70odd would've been so tempting!

I'd love to know who we've been speaking to or who we're planning for, we'll never be privy to that information but I wish Tony could come out and say.
Surely it's butters or Walsh next year

Best 22 looks bloody good on paper now. If everybody is fit we bring in 7 best 18 starting players next year. I have included King, Pou and Howard on that list.

Almost 40% of our starting line up are new recruits!!

We are a completely different side next year, will be bloody exciting to watch. If we get a clean bill of health we are dangerous.

If you want a laugh, head over to the Geelong trade thread. It’s just arrogant campaigners throwing shade at us for not accepting their “overs deal”. They’re clearly upset for missing Marshall but deflect by mentioning our lack of success, haven’t heard that one before!

Jeez I hope they stumble down the ladder in 2026

10:13 - St Kilda explain Leek Aleer withdrawal
After chasing GWS defender Leek Aleer for several years, St Kilda shockingly pulled out of what appeared to be a relatively straightforward deal with the Giants within the final week of trade period.
With a lucrative deal on the table for Aleer, the Giants defender requested to join St Kilda, however the Saints opted against trading for the out-of-contract Giant, blindsiding Aleer following multiple meetings and offers out of Moorabbin.
Speaking on Trade Radio, St Kilda CEO Carl Dilena revealed the details as to why the deal fell through.
"It was disappointing from our end," Dilena told Trade Radio.
"It's one of those really challenging situations you face as a leader or as a group, where the goalposts shifted.

"We had to pivot, and unfortunately, the way the facts change, we knew we weren't going to be able to satisfy GWS, so we thought the best thing to do was to hit that straight up, rather than dragging it out to 7:30pm last night.
"Not all deals get done, as we've seen, and we thought it'd probably be better for him if we gave his manager the opportunity to see if he could find another home.
"We also knew full well that he had a contract offer from GWS, so he wasn't going to go hungry, he had a guaranteed position already.
"It was a tough call, but we tried to do it with respect. We knew we were going to have a media pile-on, that's just what happens and you cop that.
"We've moved on, he's got a contract with GWS, he is in a good spot and we have managed to sort out our list.
"I think it's worked out well in the end, and we just have to move on, cop a whack and just keep going."
Was there any thought of taking him to the pre-season draft?
"It was more that it made us pivot and look at plan B, and the depth of our list. We debated it pretty heavily, as to whether we could see it on that basis or not.
"Ultimately, when you are juggling list spots and availability as well as a whole range of other factors, it pushed us in a certain direction.
"It's finished in a good spot."
Did Jack Silvagni coming in affect the trade?
"It did. There was depth added by Jack.
"If you're thinking of this as a two to three year plan, Jack came into the equation very late. It did change the dynamic if you look at the depth of our backline versus other spaces in our list.
"It certainly did shift the dynamic just a little bit. We still thought going into trade period that we would take Leek Aleer."
