Money might not be the most important factor... but it's always a factor, and can potentially change things, particularly if someone is on the fence.
Do you honestly believe we are going to sit there and count pennies on Nas?

Like it’s up to you and you can believe whatever you want.

But that’s a very long bow to reach for in my opinion.

No I don't... i'd really hope not, anyway.

I'm just responding to what you said. "It's been reported we'll match any offer". To me, that's very different to making him an offer above what other clubs are offering.

What i ACTUALLY think is nobody really has a clue.

My gut is still telling me he wants to stay, based on what he has said, and ignoring what everyone else has said.

Well it’s in the context that Adelaide are offering something like an 8-9 year deal at over $1m a season

So if we are willing to match any offer, the context is that we are also seeing Nas in the same light and think a deal at that length - which could be the leagues longest contract is something that’s worth the risk

That's really not how "we'll match any offer" reads though.

Anyway....

Just for context, Dusty didn't re-sign with the Tigers until the last day of August in 2017.

I am praying that Nas re-signs, but just because he hasn't signed now, doesn't mean he won't sign. His comments after the Dees win makes me think he will stay, but what would I know.

I think there should be a massive list turnover at the end of the season with a lot of the old guard going, getting traded. We should be selling the vision to Nas that he can be the posterboy of the next generation of Saints stars.

That’s exactly what it means…

If Adelaide as reported by Twomey are sticking a contract just shy of 10 years on the table.

We’Ll match any offer means just that.

We will match that - and that’s with the risks an offer like that comes with from a clubs point of view.

2017 was a little while ago, but not too long ago. Dusty certainly wasn't re-signed by the time of Rooey's last game, because I remember seeing the Richmond crowd and thinking "why would Dusty want to leave this?" De Goey was another late re-signing.

Offers include money.

Has it been reported anywhere what our actual financial offer is to NAS? I've read it's that we will match anything on offer from the SA clubs but surely we are on the front foot and putting a godfather offer larger then then the SA clubs for him to sign long term...

I reckon we've said to him "write down whatever number you want". His manager would be desperately wanting him to stay because his cut will be so much bigger, but maybe Nas really just wants to go home and will take a lot less money to do it. His manager would be trying pretty hard to convince him to take the big number, I'm sure!

Yeah but neither of them actually wanted to leave, their managers were just using other clubs as leverage to get the biggest contract they could. Very different to this situation. No-one thinks Nas's manager is just using SA clubs as a negotiating tactic.

Tim Kelly went back home and everyone was fine with it, but lets see what the Cats got for him.
Picks 14, 24 , and 33. and a first rounder for the following year ( which helped them get Cameron ).
Surely we are entitled to demand this level of compensation.

Adelaide have pick 15 right now, Port don't have a first rounder. We can demand it all we like, but if the two teams don't have those picks...

Surely Nas has made a decision by now, the fact that nothing has been announced tells me he's gone. Would dearly love to know what the f::: is going on with the Keeler and Windy contracts too. 🤨
Imatellingya. Nas holding out till his boyz are locked away.

Yeah, its like i go into a bar and tell them i'd like to have a cocktail but i have no money. Who loses out in that scenario?

The Manager for Nas is just holding out to get his best price - just all a game.
They can name any price they want and we will give it to him.
My main concern is Phillipou , he needs to get as many games into him and give him the confidence that his future is at this club.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the season with us getting development into guys like Tobe , Viking , Phillipou , Keller , Wilson , Boxshall , Collard and Henry getting his form up to speed.

yeah some good points there.
1. Maximum value yes, but we are a subsidized team. We are a welfare team and we need to spend. In an open market there is no way we pay for Hannebury, Hill etc. There is, of course, limits and degrees of common sense even here, and to be honest, we probably crossed it with Hannebury. Personally, I think we should have picked up the other Crouch.
2. I think staying competitive IS long term planning. I don’t believe in the media spin about staying stuck in the middle of the ladder is a curse. I think, for us it is a blessing and an opportunity. EDIT: It is NOT nor should be an aspiration. It is an accommodation. Of course they go with the populist narratives. They go with ‘the old story’ , the trope.
3. I don’t know what you mean here by natural selection. Can you explain more?
4. Mnnn, yes, but I can’t help comparing. Teams like Geelong a Brisbane and Hawthorn and Adelaide trade. And they play old.

It was the trade capital that was the issue. We also maxed the cap out as a fringes of the top 8 side. Just all kinds of terrible

Whenever we're faced with an important player potentially leaving I think back to how we felt when Plugger left.

That really seemed like it would be the death knell of the club. An unfathomable loss for those of us who had been through the heartbreak of 91 & 91 & then the implosion of 93.

It really seemed like we were bound for another decade of 1980's like hell.

When Freo came calling with massive deals for Loewe & Burkey 12 months later it looked even more dire.

But when they re-signed it was like the club had a new lease on life.

Not gonna try to sugar coat it... losing Nas would be a Plugger like event.

But I do have confidence that if that does eventuate, we have the people in place to make good decisions & add multiple young talents to the group we already have.

We probably need to sell off the bulk of the older guys at that point and go harder rebuild. We look further away than when Lyon arrived right now and losing NAS is a step further back.

I shitcan this club more than anyone but thinking we’ve only said “we’ll match any offer” is lunacy.

We would have made a financial and contract term offer, there is not doubt about that. I would suggest we’ve also said “if you get other offers in excess tell us because we will match money and terms”.

I think we’re often poorly run but no one is dumb enough to just say “we’ll match whatever someone else give you”

Hawks re-signed Noah Mraz to 2028

Hopefully we go after one of their other depth key defenders; Blanck, Serong, Frost even as backup

They've even got Scrimshaw playing in the 2s right now

Mraz was who I wanted when we took Barrat, he was taller a better mark and better offensive game. I think he will be a ripper and is already showing plenty at VFL level.

I agree with this. I have no idea if NWM wants to stay or wants to go but if his manager is giving him any advice other than sit and hold, he needs a new manager. Right now it is an auction and the longer he waits the more the teams will bid each other up.
The fact we have said we will match any bid means he doesn't need to make a decision until someone blinks. If he wants to stay or if wants to go he should wait until Port and Adelaide have made their final highest offers.
