Would we take a third rounder for Steele, or a 4th? I think we need to move him on.
We’d get next to nothing I reckon at this rate, but his form is seriously worrying and which leaves us really bare if teams clamp down on McRae.

The view at the start of the season was we’d see a better Steele with McRae providing support, but we’re seeing career worst stats this season for him and there’s a strong argument he’s cooked:
  • Worst player ratings since 2019.
  • Worst coaches votes average since his first two seasons with GWS (2015-16).
  • Lowest time on ground since 2017.
  • Lowest disposals since his first two seasons with GWS (2015-16).
  • Lowest disposal efficiency since 2021.
  • Worst kicking efficiency of all seasons he’s played AFL.
  • Best handball efficiency since 2018, albeit probably says he’s playing safe right now.
  • Lowest inside 50s since 2020 which was the COVID year with reduced game time.
  • Lowest rebound 50s since his first two seasons with GWS (2015-16).
  • Lowest metres gained since 2018.
  • Lowest clangers and turnovers since his first two seasons with GWS (2015-16), which along with the handball efficiency stat says he’s playing safe.
  • Lowest contested possessions since 2019.
  • Lowest uncontested possessions since 2020 (covid year).
  • Lowest possessions since his first two seasons with GWS (2015-16).
  • Lowest intercept possessions since his first two seasons with GWS (2015-16).
  • Lowest gathers hit outs and crumbs since the stats were introduced.
  • Highest CBAs since the stat was introduced, however somehow lowest centre clearances since 2019, and his lowest CC per CBA since this stat was introduced.
  • Interestingly, it’s been his best season of all time for stoppage clearances which puts forward an argument around just playing off half forward and pushing into stoppages.
  • Lowest marks since his debut season (2015).
  • His first season averaging 0.0 contested marks and marks on lead, and lowest intercept marks since his debut season (2015).
  • Lowest goals average since his debut season (2015).
  • Lowest goal accuracy since 2019.
  • Lowest pressure acts. spoils and 1%s since his first two seasons with GWS (2015-16).

At this rate we don’t have much of a choice to play him off half forward and push him up into stoppage and perhaps rotate both Pou and Hall through CBAs.

That’s the point, I think we need to get him off the list. Similar to what Hawks did with Mitchell and O’mera, move him on and let they young guys and Clarke go in.

Wow I knew he was having a down year but those stats are damning....

I think JSOS does move the needle. We were an elite defensive side until this year. Losing Battle and having Howard go down turned our bat line into probably our most vulnerable this year. Patch that and get some midfielders back firing and we look a lot closer. Tigers went straight to a flag from where we are and they added good but not great players.
I don't mind going with JSOS rather than Aleer, actually. Doesn't cost draft capital and can be phased out when Tauru/Barrat are ready. The only cost would be the cries of nepotism

I know it’s early but Harvey Langford playing pretty well so far. Still feels so good that we won that Carlton game last year, much rather that than a 10+ year midfielder. Sugar hit is always better.

Do we have a yawn emoji?

Asking for a friend.........

Just take the captaincy off him, and play him on merit. If that means sticking him in the VFL - good. Need selection integrity, and I don’t like that having the C next to your name makes you immune from being dropped from the team.

I’ll die on this hill! 🤣

It’s just so frustrating and its reasons like this which is why we’re never in contention. We complain about everything else but we don’t help ourselves, instead we keep trying to build a midfield of picks 40+. Makes life very hard.

I think we should go back and concede the Round 2 game to Geelong and the Round 4 game to Port Adelaide. So we get a high draft pick and see the player we should draft being taken by the kid's dad's club.

Also, at no stage was any other club trading a first for Tim Membrey.

He hasn't been dropped because despite him having a down year, he's still a top 2 midfielder for us.

We don't get many first round picks.
We know Nas is special.
We think Pou might be special.
We hope that Tauru is special.
Not saying Bergman isn't a good player, but he's hardly going to be a massive team booster.
McLennan might be dead wood , but he's only 21.

We need depth. You’d keep him hoping to get a return to form. Just not guaranteed a starting spot anymore. At the moment he’s lucky that no one is pushing him out.

I think Steele has been better the last three weeks, but he's still not outstanding. In 2020-21 and parts of 2022 and 2023 he was outstanding.

Also, he's the captain and we're not dropping the captain. It's just not happening. The discussion as to whether he should be captain is a different one.

It’s just so frustrating and its reasons like this which is why we’re never in contention. We complain about everything else but we don’t help ourselves, instead we keep trying to build a midfield of picks 40+. Makes life very hard.

Our midfield looked stacked before injury bit hard. Phillipou looked ready to burst out and be a dominant mid off his end to 2024. Macrae added another dominant extractor. Paddy Dow, Zones and Hunter Clark as depth. Garcia another year older and pushing up. Guys like Wilson looking like they could move inside.

It only takes a couple of injuries to make a strong line look weak. Pretty much every line has had critical injuries this season. Battle and Howard out of the back 6 bit us hard. Marshall struggling to impact and midfield decimation hurt there and King going down after moving on Membrey has stuffed forward structures. Sometimes adversity finds a few gems and fast tracks a few.

Despite the negativity Hammer looks a high end tall back. Garcia has more exposure than would have been expected and Sharman has played in his best role. Plenty of others like LOC have shown a bit and been fast tracked.
