Rowan has got minimum 5 years left of excellent football, 8 years maybe serviceability.

He's a durable footballer who has not had any injuries.

Why would we waste that on a draft pick who isn't a certainty of even playing that long?

I just don't get it.
Can’t say I agree that Marshall has 8 years of serviceable football left.

But to answer your question. Everyone is howling about the club not addressing its midfield.

A number of people are saying we should be drafting them if we can’t trade or land them via FA.

If Marshall wants to leave or if the club want to trade Marshall because we now have TDK.

The only acceptable outcome in my eyes is positioning ourselves to get a top 10 pick to land that midfielder alongside our own pick.

It doesn’t guarantee anything. But we aren’t winning anything as is. We do know that getting more and more top 10 picks does eventually turn the tide and changes the trajectory of clubs.

Name me the teams who signed big name free agents then won a flag.

There's Richmond with Lynch. And Geelong with Cameron and Dangerfield

But I doubt they were paying overs like St Kilda's thinking.
What are Richmond and Geelong as far as big clubs go. Do you think we are on a level playing field with them or Essendon or Carlton or Collingwood or the four northern teams?
We trade and recruit with one hand tied behind our backs by the corrupt AFL.
If you can't see that then there is no point in replying to this.

If there was a gun mid available to us at that pick (not swallowed up by all the compromises) then that would have to be seriously considered.

Gold Coast might do that as well because it looks like yet another of their Academy players will be a top 3 pick.
You have to position yourself to land one or both of these 2 kids, who were early doors #1 pick contenders. (These are also very early door takes as to who we could target. Could change next month)

Fred Rodriguez

Dyson Sharp

Tom Golstein, Rhys Stanley and Shane Mumford would disagree on how long rucks can play for.

This is the same conversation we had about Battle last year and every other decent player we have let go for the chance to roll the dice on another high draft pick.

This just seems skuttlebutting to get a "message" out there.

How many serviceable 38 year old AFL players running around?

Agreed but what's your point?

You think the answer is paying a player $5mil more than anyone else thinks he's worth?

Todd Goldstein looks absolutely farked running around as the number 1

Stanley is terrible, injury prone and doesn’t play weekly and they are looking at Marshall to replace him.

Mumford retired from injury. Came back. Play little and retired again.

I literally cannot believe the talk of moving Rowan Marshall on.

He's been the best recruit we have had for decades and now typical St Kilda, the grass is greener on the other side ... a shiny new toy is be now available... lets jump on that.

Rucks can play for longer than any other type of player, this could backfire very very badly.
Best recruit we’ve had for decades. Deary me

Plenty of draft reflection going on at the moment. If Jack Billings had two wheels he would've been a bike, not a footballer. The bad men of 10 years ago are gone, they can't hurt us anymore.

Goldstein and Stanley are both cooked

Didn't we say that all last year about Battle and getting a midfielder ?
Lost Battle and didn't get a mid

Sounds like the Manager wanting to get the best deal from St Kilda, throwing in Bulldogs. I have a feeling Bergman has told his manager he wants to go to the Saints and he's just being responsible and doing his job.
Didn’t think the Bulldogs wanted “bad kicks” 🤔

Him from VFL as a 21 year old, Wilkie from SANFL as a 23 year old.

I'd say they'd both be candidates for best recruit of the modern AFL era. Struggling to think of any better ones right now.

Must be taken in context of what was given up for them. Where they came from.

I said it in the context of if Marshall wants to leave or they want to trade him.

Not that I’m advocating trading him.

I don’t see the value getting a first rounder and using it on Bergman.

Its the only answer that we are allowed to give by the AFL, so yes.

We dont have a big profile because we never get blockbusters

We can't rebuild through the draft as the good players like FS and NGA's up north are given for free to top four teams.

We have tried and tried again to lure players on fair salaries but they chose other clubs because of the above.

So the club has banked the SC so we can do this. It costs no draft capital. One comes, we get say Aleer and Bergman, others may follow.

So with the above laid out what is your alternative? Which Bont or Cripps like character wont cost draft capital and is a FA?

I think since 2021 the recruiters have gone as well as one could expect. They stuffed up with Battle however with the deal we get from the corrupt AFL with shit draws, and the cheating FS and NGA's I dont know what else the club can do.

The reality is that the competition is not even, it is stacked against clubs like St.Kilda. Apart from Battle, they have gone Ok.

Why not? Keep Boyd as back up and still have Dodson developing and Heath.

We get TDK, Bergman, probably Aleer, keep our first rounder and offload a 30 year old.

Steele can go with him.

I made a big fuss in the other thread about the importance of calm, rational analysis and avoiding emotion.

But it's hard to follow that advice when watching today's news.

If St Kilda throws $12.5 million at a guy and then loses their number 1 ruck- who's one of the top 3 or 4 rucks in the league, they're basically paying a million dollars a year to (potentially) downgrade the ruck position.

And keep in mind, De Koning's only 3.5 years younger. Marshall may have 3 or 4 good years left- when you consider rucks often maintain form into their 30's - Gawn, Goldstein, Ryder etc.

Just unbelievably stupid.

And it just happens that, right now, St Kilda's trying to re-sign their best young prospect. He'll look at De Koning and say "well I deserve that money. I've got more potential than him".

And young Nasiah would be 100% correct.

What's more, spending extra $$$ on De Koning AND NWM makes it harder to find $$ for the midfielder we need in coming years.

I really hope Morris made this up.

But if Morris is in the know, St Kilda's risking losing one of the best rucks in the league just to massively overpay another guy, and simultaneously pushing up the asking price of their young star they're wooing while making it more difficult to fill the list hole we actually need to fill.

Just incomprehensibly abysmal stuff from St Kilda.
Mate you started with calm and rational analysis and finish with incomprehensible abysmal stuff from St.Kilda based on a media article. FM that’s a jump.
