Malthouse was a longtime aggressor of wanting rid of Cola.

This was a tirade back when he was at Carlton

Malthouse wouldn't understand things such as cost of living allowances, as his cost of living was zero.

Biggest tight arse on the planet. Used to send invoices to the Pies for everything, including having Tarrant around for a $1 sausage.

I knew his son well. He played for Hampton Rovers, and Mick offered to come down and give a speech on b & f night.

The club president assumed he was coming down as a parent of the club, he proceeds to invoice the Rovers 1,500 for his time🤣

I think no matter what we do this off-season, we have to get a pick that is high enough to allow us access to Grlj/Fred/Hibbins-Hargreaves/a dynamic mid depending how the top 10 shapes up. If Fred slides out to teens then maybe we could get both him and Grlj

Grlj has drawn comparisons to Zak Butters & Hugh McCluggage - he'd be so perfect for us
I think of the Fred that played for Man U and the enjoyment he gave me as a Liverpool supporter (hours of hanging sh*t on my Man U supporter mates about how abjectly crap he was).

It would be my Saint supporter luck for us to draft a Fred and have those same mates laughing about his two left feet and two right hands which never connect with what his brain wants to do.

Sorry to the Aussie Fred. I'm sure you're a good kid. 😉

All this talk about getting rid of Boyd is silly remember he won a magary medal in SA

Other recent Magarey Medallists (https://www.draftguru.com.au/awards/magarey-medal):

Will Snelling (after AFL delisting)
Harry Grant (never drafted)
Aaron Young (after AFL delisting)
Bryce Gibbs (after AFL retirement)
James Tsitas (then drafted, played 5 games)
Campbell Combe (never drafted)
Luke Partington (after AFL delisting)
Mitch Grigg (after AFL delisting)
Zane Kirkwood (never drafted)
Joel Cross (never drafted)
Matt Thomas (when at Port, then delisted and played 15 more games)
Brad Symes (when at Adelaide, then delisted)
James Allan (after AFL delisting)
James Ezard (after AFL delisting)
Luke Crane (never drafted)
Brett Backwell (after AFL delisting)
Jeremy Clayton (after AFL delisting)
Paul Thomas (then drafted, played 8 games)

Last player who won the Magarey then got drafted and went on to have a career was Josh Francou in 1996. These days it just doesn't happen. The Sandover is only slightly better - Ballantyne in 2008. Liston the same - Podsiadly in 2008.

State League medals just don't mean anything these days. They're won by guys who aren't going to make it at the next level.

McEvoy & Armitage would have to be considered successful picks.

Lynch was a good pick - just wanted out.

Didnt have a first in 05,09 and 2010 we came in at 24 and nailed it with Cripps - who again wanted out.

Nailed 2011 at pick 24. Seb Ross

12-14 are shit shows but we walk away with Sinclair.

15 was Gresham which was a hit until injury.

No FRP in 16 but we landed Steele and Marshall.

17 is an absolute shitshow. At the end of 2020 it looked like a home run with Coffield Clark and Paton.

18 goes from being amazing to shit (current state) all on Kings shoulders. We did get Wilkie.

19 done to death.

20 we turned the pick into Higgins. Has to be a success.

21-24 still to early. But fairly bullish.

So injuries throughout and retention at a time we were a strong side have really hurt.

It isn’t as cut and dry as poor drafting

A big thank you to our President and CEO who are continuing to seek more fairness in the draft.

I particularly agree with:

1. Immediately abolishing unfettered Northern Academy access replacing this to the current NGA system which is applicable to the other 14 clubs.

2. Preventing top 4 clubs from matching any Academy or NGA bid in the first round of the draft.

3. Limiting any club to matching no more than one Academy or Father Son bid per draft.

Let’s see what the AFL does and when they do it. But I suspect that even they recognise that if things don’t change quickly this year’s draft is going to be a humiliating fiasco.

The handwringing over Paddy seems odd

Everyone knows Petracca was the better player but Paddy could play.

I’ll never forget one game maybe first few years he absolutely tore Rance a new one for a quarter and a half and then snapped his collarbone. That was his career in a nutshell. Incredible mark and decent kick but could never get healthy.

He was never going to be Fev or Buddy but he would have been a very good player.
Anyone know what Paddy McCartin is doing these days?

Grlj has a severe vowel deficiency - avoid

Good equal playing field for everyone

Will still be unequal as our NGA Zone is still the size of a postage stamp.

Suns will keep half of QLD and parts of other states.

But yes hopefully the uneven playing field will be made less steep.

Take the big step first.

Then amend or abolish the NGA Zones after these big changes are made.

Dear lord this would cause absolute havoc to the draft pool 😍😍

Saints better duck for cover….missiles headed their way over this!

Set the bar high, accept some changes this draft and go after the rest next year. Chances they do it all at once probably nil..

Oh and, can the presidents of other assenting clubs, ( and I’m sure there’d be quite a few) put their hands up as well so they cop some flack too.

If they abolish the academy system this year, will we draft a second Max King?

Anyone know what Paddy McCartin is doing these days?
Saw him at Williamstown v Geelong a couple of weeks back, my Berner ran up to him, I commented, he made a bit of a smart arse answer and then my dog knocked over his can of drink which was appropriate 🤣🤣🤣
