Talk of our club only wanting to take Dean and Ison in the draft is concerning.

We have roughly gone 4th, 8th, 13th in the ladder, this is not the trajectory of a club that has enough talent on the list, this also doesn’t factor in player losses

If we can get 1-2 quality young players via trade, great, but if we are mostly getting fringe players, then we need to be adding more at the draft

For those years we’ve also added
O.Hollands
Cowan
Moir
Wilson
Carroll
Lord
Smith
O’Farrell
B.Camporeale
L.Camporeale
Charleson
Evans
White
F.Young

They won’t all make it, some at the end of the list are even uncontracted now so could already be gone, but it’s a reasonable number with some promising prospects.

Then add Dean & Ison, maybe Gresham, possibly a rookie look at a Clark, Hogg, Etc. Plus Walker next year of course.

Watch us try and move up in this years draft like last year with Sydneys 1st along with our TDK compo

Not doubting the information but what we do at the draft this year will probably be majorly influenced by two factors that are still up in the air: Charlie and the adjustments to the father-son/academy bidding.

Charlie I think is the biggest one. It wouldn’t surprise me if Charlie were to be traded, that we would part with the TDK pick to bring an A grade player in. Possibly in a 3 team deal. Have a feeling it will be exciting what we end up doing with that pick. Graham Wright is a shrewd operator when it comes to trading

Which is why you would package it up with the tdk compo pick to move ahead of the dean pick.

Much less likely to be able to do that from walker next year
But it’s still to close to do that. Nothing is stopping an Essendon or Richmond from bidding on Dean early in the draft

Twomey has him at 8, but there’s 3 academy selections earlier, plus the Allen and maybe Draper compo picks so if that ranking held true we’d want to get up to pick 3 (or 4 if Draper band2) to get ahead? Even then, it’s so close that it wouldn’t surprise me to see another club bid on him which burns that pick.

Maybe we try and get tricky on the night, but it’s probably challenging to safely get ahead of Dean.

Plus we don’t want to make things harder for ourselves next year with Walker, and ideally we’d look to add to our hand in 26 for that.

Not for us. No point having a first round pick around the point Dean is rated (which according to Cal Twomey is around 8). Use them to trade for a player, or trade into next years draft
We will have the TDK compo pick which currently is in the frame to be used for Dean
So another pick after the TDK compo would be available to use in the draft.
Conversely a pick earlier than the TDK pick either gets used to match (as you say, but then we can use the TDK pick in the draft)....or if it's ahead of a bid obviously we can use it then.

All this doesn't consider options to package up picks to move up this year or into early next year where we will need to be ready for Cody bid, or to trade for a player from another club.

Moving ahead of a Dean bid will be very expensive.
Given we already spent a lot last year to get Jagga, and will (it’s looking extremely likely) now have to spend a lot to get Cody next year, I just don’t think we have enough currency that it would be a sensible decision.

We will also still need points for Dean, and now likely Ison.
It doesn’t add up.

Because we have Dean as a top 10 pick. Don’t want a first rounder swallowed up by the points system effectively unused
You would be correct if we had the option to take say two second round picks worth more total points instead. But I think the discussion is really are picks wasted compared to getting established players instead.

The issue is more if we go ahead of a bid, and he still gets bid on before our pick, then we look beyond stupid

And we will have just wasted currency that we can’t afford on a gamble
Assuming we'd have got this pick from a hypothetical Curnow trade, it depends what the alternatives are in the deal. Only wasted if there's a better option available.

I'm thinking #2 and F1 from WCE (via Sydney) would be a good outcome.

I'd be in for 12 months of Jones.
Just to give our recruits time to develop and he is someone who has been proven pairing with Weiters.
We have enough young blokes in defense already and we can't just fill our backline with young draftees.
You need to surround them with Hardened seasoned campaigners and allow them to develop before you smash them to pieces with Tom Lynch types.

#14 is free too.. I’d take him for a year definitely

The discussion was about trading up in the draft, not just being given a high pick if we trade Curnow.

And just draft picks for Curnow would not be a good outcome, and would go against what the club has been saying privately.

We're in an interesting situation re cap space over the next couple of years.

With TDK, JSOS, Doch, Elijah, Gov and potentially Acres and Curnow we should have an absolute bucket load of cash free'd up for some trade targets.

Unfortunately with the new bid matching system and our F/S and NGA prospects we're quite hamstrung in who we can actually bring in over the next two off seasons in terms of having picks to trade with.

Butters, Bailey, McInerney and B.King the only real standouts in terms of RFA in 2026 which means if we miss on them we'd most likely be sitting on a mountain of cash for multiple seasons.

In some ways that could be a blessing in disguise as we'd be able to bank cap space and front end some deals with certain players, in another... We would be essentially wasting the final years of Cripps, Harry, Weiters and others primes.

Very interested to see how we approach things this off season.
Quite the experience possibly departing.

Would like to know more on the Acres name-dropping? Where has this actually come from (WA return, or a VIC trade, bearing in mind they’re new parents and pretty sure the partner is from VIC)?

McGovern should only be kept if we play him as a forward and he can commit to contesting 100% every time. More so if CC departs (Kemp’s Achilles return questions).

Lij = hopefully we can get him on-track to remain and play HFF.

HFF: EH - McKay - Williams
FF: Moir - McGovern - Frank

Since when is he in the list management team?
