A pick 1 but not the one you are talking about. Sydney can work the details out and lob them on Nicks desk.
Ha. Harley’s extending. Yeah interesting to see what view the Blues list management team take this year. Dean and Walker are going to be very good FS pick ups. Lindsay or more likely Dovaston would be good too.

Good luck with that list
Good luck trying to run a self sufficient club and not relying on AFL handouts.

Will the AFL just pay money directly to TDK and NAS because your club is so poor and such a basketcase?

Joke of a 'club' couldn't finish higher than us after a disappointing season for us and a stack of injuries. No more desperate money to throw at anyone else either after Leek Aleer or JSOS take the 800k your 'club' throws around. Must be nice spending the AFL's money and not having to pay it back! 😂

I’m of the opinion the list needs some surgery at the top end, this senior core have had 5 years together and produced some great footy at the end of 2023 and the ent footy at the start of 2024, but nothing to suggest it’s got another gear to match the Top 4, consistently with the required skill base or mental strength.

If our senior core is (debatable of course)
Cripps
Walsh
Hewett
Cerra
Weitering
Newman
Saad
TDK
Curnow
McKay
JSOS

You don’t want to cut too deep. Doesn’t work, any team that’s done it has been devoured by mediocrity. 80/20 Pareto Rule, you could lose 2 of those players for draft picks, any more than that though and your senior core is too thin and susceptible to form and injury such that the damage to the development of the younger players becomes a quagmire. So if TDK and JSOS are gone for draft picks, any other of the senior players need to be replaced by another senior player.

If Curnow goes as well, it can’t be for draft picks. It’s got to be for what we are clearly lacking.

I would not be upset at all to lose TDK, JSOS and another senior player though, we need a rejig of the list. The only one in my opinion who we couldn’t lose is Weitering. Anyone else, if the deal is right, it’s time to make some moves.

Rather than target the top end I think we need to be absolutely ruthless with anyone who can't kick. Interested if people agree with the below.

BAD

Acres - should be gone
O Hollands - terribly unreliable kick. Young enough that he could get better maybe
Gov - can be great but always mixes in the odd howler
Cerra - kicking went to hell this year
Fog - not good enough
Doc - gone
Binns - most likely gone
Haynes - shonky but seriously improved
L Young - terrible
Wilson - poor but young enough to improve
F Young - for a guy touted as a great kick he was a bit off but young enough that he can improve.
Lord is a good kick but also throws in some shockers
Evans - dramatically improved but still shonky
Orazio - shonky - surely he's gone
Kemp
Walsh - kicking into F50 is statistically the worst in the AFL I believe

The good users:

JSOS
Saad
Boyd
Newman
Moir
Cripps
Hewett
Cottrell
E Hollands
Carroll
Zac
Harry... ish
Cow
Weit
Charlie - though he was waaay down this year
Harry Dean?
Jagga?

On the recruiting front I think we should prioritize speed and - in particular - kicking ability. I don't care if they come from the VFL or another club. We just need elite foot-skills.

The guys who get an easy mark on the wing, then hold it without the confidence to take on any sort of challenging option then bomb it long down the line absolutely kill us. Half the time they can't even kick it to the advantage of our tall guy down the line.

Then should our compensation be much higher than pick 9 given it probably ranks as the biggest FA signing in the history. 1.8 x 8?

Like I said earlier... the AFL aren't going to invent some mythical band 1+ tier compo pick...

As much as we wish that to be the case, it isn't gonna happen...

Best we could possibly hope for, is given JSOS is probably leaving too and compensation is calculated by net loss, the combination of TDK + JSOS's new contracts gets us two band 1 picks so we end up with pick 10+11 (assuming Draper leaves * as well, they'll get band 1 compo for him, pushing our pick back another spot).

But even that is more wishful thinking...

I would’ve been pissed if we re-signed Tom on the rumoured $1.1m pa, even considering we don’t have a ruckman on the list that’s half as good as Marshall at the moment. $1.8m over 8 years is just absurd. Credit to Tom and his manager. I wish him all the best as let’s not kid ourselves, he is a great player/talent and a seemingly great club person with his best footy ahead of him.

Harry Dean is not a bad consolation prize, trading in front of him would be even better. HOK projects to be a similar talent if not as prolific in the guts but far more capable up forward. Stats suggest we win more games with Pitto solo rucking. We can find 2-3 best 22 players from the salary freed up, and we can be rest assured our cap is going to be in a hell of a lot better shape than St Kilda’s when they’re paying a 34 year old ruckman nearly 2m bucks a year. Nasiah leaving in 2 years time will help that.

Looks like a win-win to me but I suspect it’ll swing our way as the years go on.

Ollie needs to settle into the one position. Can kick it quite well at times but I have a feeling the inconsistency has much to do with his role regularly changing. Versatility is important in modern players but it comes at a cost.

Flynn Young was troublesome early doors. I genuinely believe this is a case of him not being able to immediately adjust to the pace of the AFL game until right at the end there. If he's on the list next year and gets a good, full, preseason in then I believe we'll see someone who is much improved.

Cooper Lord is another who needs to be rewarded with a consistent role. Too often this year he was thrown into whatever Voss and the coaches thought was our problem area. Not necessarily because they trusted Cooper to fix it but more so because they didn't want to tinker with their main guys. That role he had before he got delayed concussion from the Wines hit was perfect. Keep him there in 2026.

Walsh -- two years in a row one of our primary forward entry specialists is the worst in this category. Last year it was Kennedy who looked a helluva lot better in a team who had better system and structure. It may not apply to Walsh, who's kicking to me looks impacted by the spinal issues, but I also believe that if we're able to improve our assistant coaches he'll become a lot better than he looks right now.

As for the players I haven't commented on, I either agree with you or don't believe I've seen enough of the player at VFL level to understand how their kicking will translate at AFL level)

Think of how much pressure will be on De Koning now. I hope he is ready for it because it will be the hardest thing to deal with.
TDK has chosen the pressure by accepting a massive contract. IMO, he has chosen everything that goes with it. I do wish TDK well personally, but if he does receive any blowback by Aints supporters if he is struggling to perform, then IMO that's on him also

What compo pick do we get for tdk? and why do the wce get pick 2 as a compo pick (speculated) for a banged up Rfa Oscar Allen? has he been offered 9 years and 1.9 mil per year!

If he was prime Max Gawn, I would kind of understand St Kilda's offer, but it's an offer to a player who has never received any accolades at club or AA levels. This will surely bite them on the arse .

I’ve been trying to work out what kind of trajectory TDK needs to follow to make this deal worth it. The sport has always been more about your bottom 6. And the jury is well and truly out about whether you need an elite ruckman to win a flag….

Like - if he becomes prime Max Gawn is that worth more to St Kilda than two 900,000k players? Which over next 3-4 years is still an AA calibre player. He basically needs to become prime Max Gawn/Dean Cox etc to for this to even come close to being par for St Kilda. And while I love him, and think he’ll almost certainly become a top 2-3 ruck in the league, the chances of him taking a leap into top 2-3 ruck of last 30-40 years appear slim at this point.

I get they never get big players to move. But sometimes you have to work with your limits. What a ****ing bonkers move from St Kilda.

It's not St Kilda, it's SOS. :(

We are now linked to SOS junior, no surprises there.
I’m not a TDK nay sayer. I think you’ve got yourself a gun player who will almost certainly be one of the best rucks in the comp and might be a 2-3 year AA type.

But trying to be rational about it, I just can’t find a justification for this for a ruck. Maybe at the back end of the contract when the cap is bigger but that’s the tail end of his career…Massive risk.
