Im pretty sure he has been tryingBeen saying this for genuinely years. Austin still yet to address it whatsoever.
I'd have Zac Williams ahead of AhChee and streets ahead of Mtolop but yeah, broadly agreeThe premier has 5 small/Medium forwards in Cameron, Lohman, Rayner, Bailey, AhChee that are better than our best small/medium forward in Motlop.. This alone explains a lot.
Adding a bunch of late picks and rookies hoping it will magically solve the issue really isn't trying in my books.Im pretty sure he has been trying
look forward to more time for F Young and Walter White, although walter's inaccuracy concerns me. Hope they both get at least one more year
How much of the rumoured link for Chad Warner to Freo/WCE is genuinely because he is homesick, IMO its at least worth a conversation and Warner + Florent at least gets the conversation going. Hayward mehOut of the teams, seemingly in the race for Curnow, the one needing him the most is Sydney. They really lack a consistent key forward. Also, he’s a draw card who they need.
I’d be happy with at least 2 first rounders and Hayward. If not Hayward, I’d be looking at Campbell - they aren’t playing him consistently in his best position off a HBF.

It all depends on how quickly you think we can change path, I am serious that we have far bigger holes to hill than in our midfield especially with the depth of quality coming through with Jagga & Cody adding to the mix, and FWIW our midfield has gone toe to toe with both these sides and done okay, its the other areas of the ground that consistently let us down. You cant be serious.
You really think our mids can stand up to what we just witnessed through the finals campaign??
Jagga looks pretty good and cody could be a future star. Time will tell.
Both Cripps and Hewett are the types we need (bull like in and under players that can retrieve the ball) but both of them lack quality kicking skills and could do with a bit of burst speed. However, Cripps is an absolute powerhouse that makes up for some of his shortfalls with his ability to break through tackles and do superman like things.
Hewett is close enough for now.
Cerra - lets not kid ourselves, he is average/good and not the sort of mid that is going to win or make a significant enough contribution to win you finals. Not to mention his hamstring issues.
Walsh - Could be the next captain but still hasn't signed beyond 2026? Not to mention back issues and maybe the reason for his lack of burst speed/power. His kicking into f50 can be pretty bad too - has a tendency to bomb it long.
ashton moir will eclipse them allAdding a bunch of late picks and rookies hoping it will magically solve the issue really isn't trying in my books.
The best teams have been investing heavy draft capital into the position for years now and are reaping the rewards.
He might. That would leave us with one good small/med forward vs their 5.ashton moir will eclipse them all
Getting a head of Dean only makes sense if there are players, we rate that make it worth doing, from my very little draft knowledge the only one that looks like it could be worth doing is Josh Lindsay who is rated anywhere from pick 2 - 15 on the various boards but has a skillset we are desperate for. Essendon appear to have the picks that we would need to target should we go down that route but as many have said we should no way be risking having the available draft capital to obtain Cody next year.No offense to Austin but if the only thing he manages over the next two off season is matching bids on Dean, Ison, Walker and adding a few fringe players then he needs to pack his bags and f*** off.
We aren't going to get ahead of teams in the hunt for a premiership playing it safe and doing the bare minimum to improve the list. Getting ahead of a Dean bid and finding a way of getting both bids matched would be a massive win for us.
Getting ahead of Cody will be borderline impossible so this is really our last chance to add quality draftees that aren't already tied to the club until Tassie comes in.
All depends on what the official rule changes actually areGetting a head of Dean only makes sense if there are players, we rate that make it worth doing, from my very little draft knowledge the only one that looks like it could be worth doing is Josh Lindsay who is rated anywhere from pick 2 - 15 on the various boards but has a skillset we are desperate for. For those that are more knowledgeable on the father son matching stuff, how will it work with future picks.. Will we be able to give up our 2026 first & a future first to match a bid, because the future wont have a value yet.
And, it’s not just that they’re quality players. First round pick traded for Cameron, pick 1 on Rayner, first round picks on Bailey and Lohman. Hipwood was also a first round pick. Investing in that area has paid off immensely. The premier has 5 small/Medium forwards in Cameron, Lohman, Rayner, Bailey, AhChee that are better than our best small/medium forward in Motlop.. Unless they change the rules you'd have to trade that future pick into the current year and it gets the value of the current pick you get.For those that are more knowledgeable on the father son matching stuff, how will it work with future picks.. Meanwhile we've invested a packet of Twisties and some diet cokes on ours. Hence why we are miles behind those teams in terms of quality smalls. And, it’s not just that they’re quality players. First round pick traded for Cameron, pick 1 on Rayner, first round picks on Bailey and Lohman. Hipwood was also a first round pick. Investing in that area has paid off immensely.
We had to sit and wait a while to see if it would bare fruit for the Crows but they made a huge jump this year after using early picks on Rankine, Rachelle, Thilthorp and Fogarty.
IMO, if you look at the 1st half where it was heavily contested our mids would definitely have stood up and thrived. It’s the 2nd half when the game opened up that we would have struggled. We would need a fit Walsh, Jagga, Cottrel and EH (and at least one more elite ball user) to keep us competitive. You really think our mids can stand up to what we just witnessed through the finals campaign
That’s the problem I see. I think Richmond take Lindsay, he will complement any list so is a safe pick when you are rebuilding.Getting a head of Dean only makes sense if there are players, we rate that make it worth doing, from my very little draft knowledge the only one that looks like it could be worth doing is Josh Lindsay who is rated anywhere from pick 2 - 15 on the various boards but has a skillset we are desperate for. Agree, its no accident that these are good footballers.. Where we have a mix of delisted frree agents, rookies & 2nd & 3rd round picks. We are still living in the past where we could steal a quality small forward int he rookie draft like Betts & Garlett whilst the rest of the comp has worked out how critical these players are to success and value/pay them accordingly. And, it’s not just that they’re quality players. First round pick traded for Cameron, pick 1 on Rayner, first round picks on Bailey and Lohman. Hipwood was also a first round pick. Investing in that area has paid off immensely.

Pretty much the key. 2023 it was getting Walsh, Cunners, Cottrell and Martin fit and firing that got us through those finals. We've never looked far off it when those outside runners have all been fit and healthy, unfortunately health was never any of their strong suits.IMO, if you look at the 1st half where it was heavily contested our mids would definitely have stood up and thrived. It’s the 2nd half when the game opened up that we would have struggled. We would need a fit Walsh, Jagga, Cottrel and EH (and at least one more elite ball user) to keep us competitive.
Our mids can turn the game into a close congested play where they can be competitive or even better but the issue then becomes our inability to link with our forwards inside f50.IMO, if you look at the 1st half where it was heavily contested our mids would definitely have stood up and thrived. This has been an issue for us for years - pre-dates VossOur mids can turn the game into a close congested play where they can be competitive or even better but the issue then becomes our inability to link with our forwards inside f50.
We make incredibly hard work of scoring.
Whilst early in our rebuild we got the skeleton mostly right, our reliance/hopes on getting players like marchy/cunners/martin didn't pay off unfortunately.
People need to understand Cottell isn’t a midfielder. Doesn’t get it nearly enough. Play half forward at best. Sorry.IMO, if you look at the 1st half where it was heavily contested our mids would definitely have stood up and thrived. It’s the 2nd half when the game opened up that we would have struggled. There are certain types of players who are not available on the open market this year and/or would cost a fortune to bring in via trade that we could target in the draft. Robey, Lindsay, Grlj etc. Skillful, running midfielders.Getting ahead of Dean/Walker makes no sense to me now that they have both shot up the draft order and we have a better understanding of the strengths/weaknesses of their draft classes.
I think we should target complementary role players in trades and take risks on lower range draft picks over the next two years.
How do we get in position to take one of these? There are certain types of players who are not available on the open market this year and/or would cost a fortune to bring in via trade that we could target in the draft. Robey, Lindsay, Grlj etc. Skillful, running midfielders.
Or as a counter thought, let’s say Butters is moving next year and the club inside are aware. There are certain types of players who are not available on the open market this year and/or would cost a fortune to bring in via trade that we could target in the draft. Robey, Lindsay, Grlj etc. Skillful, running midfielders.
This is our last hit at the draft before Tassie as Walker will require nearly all of our draft capital next year.
Cheap role players in the right age bracket and top end talents in the draft. Bank some cap space for free agents next year or the year after.
