We don't higher than 4 for getting ahead of Dean bid (worst case).

If we get 4 from Richmond, they won't bid at 3.

As of today we have enough points to match a bid on Dean at pick 10 or later.
Obviously a lot will change between now and draft day but with TDK compo and other trades to come ā¦ we are well placed to cover off this and next yearās needs.

Hi all, long time lurker first time poster.
FWIW, in short I see our trade window going something along the lines of
Curnow -> Swans for 1st, F1 and Florent with potentially a later pick heading back to Sydney.
3rd rounders this year or future or pick upgrades to WC & WB for Chesser & Khamis.
Hoping Elijah pulls his head in once and for all and makes the most of the opportunity afforded to him. We are a different side with him as that mid-fwd link.
TDK compo already on the table, is there a chance this forms the basis of a play for Humphrey? Not against bringing him in but also not as high on him as some others seen to be.
Potentially be able to draft with the Swans first if Charlie trade proceeds and Dean doesnāt receive a bid, then use SOS compo to match the most part of Dean bid, grab Ison and then rookie Gresham.
Anyhow excited for the coming weeks and keen to become a part of the forum

I just don't think Carlton are going to trade Curnow without a minimum B+ player being attached to the deal. Florent won't cut it. 2 x Firsts & Hayward is starting to get closer to the mark but still a good chance to be rejected by the club.

It doesnāt because it doesnāt make you use good picks of similar value which is the biggest problem.
They donāt want teams moving miles up the draft from a heap of lower picks, hence why they want the two pick rule.
This is what I think people donāt get. They want teams to have to get as close to the bid pick as possible because that is the true value of the pick.
They're still using those picks. They just might get a few more points by trading them to a willing partner who wants them.
And again, if the DVI is set correctly, you can't trade down too much, because there isn't enough points/picks.

More like we're still smarting from the spanking that the AFL gave us over the salary cap infringements 23 years ago. And not surprisingly, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the club isn't put through the ringer every single year. Despite the fact that Essendon cheated the salary cap, tampered with the draft, evaded tax, and won a premiership while doing all of that, they got a fine for a systemic doping regime. If it had been us, the AFL would have shut us down.

So securing pick 14 last year (what dropped a few rungs and became Murphy Reid) cost us: expected pick 9 - 10 or 11 after bids - and expected pick 31.
From a likely player standpoint that's:
1x of Reid, Hynes, Dattoli, Trainor (IMO Hynes preferred)
vs
1x of Marsh, Cumming, or Greeves, and someone like Oudshoorn-Bennier (if the later pick survived bids)
Not worth it really, and the situation got worse when we threw the kitchen sink to get Jagga, especially after having to trade with Brisbane to meet our 2025 pick quota. The better outcome once the Hawks trade was completed still would have been to push up Hotton's range with one pick instead of betting the house on Jagga.
People will fire back about how this season could not have been precisely predicted, but in reality we only sunk a little bit from the likely outcome unless we made major structural changes to the 22 (which we didn't).
I'm glad the football and coaching departments have been ripped up, but the list management team are on thin ice, and better do a lot more with the assets they are receiving and moving around this week.

Zac Bailey or Zak Butters as a free agent in 2026 with all the spare cash... Would not mind the look of this team whatsoever.

Bold of you to assume that we wouldn't be playing Hewett given the lack of defensive application in the rest of the midfield unit. Williams and Newman would also be in struggle street by then.
I'd be tearing my hair out if our ruck/forward situation looks like that too, but it's slightly better than Pittonet. 2027 should have us spelling O'Keeffe with McKay - ideally not at the centre square - and utilising Robey, Cripps, and Kemp as our key forward rotation alongside Moir and Hayward as foils.
But such a system needs a little more speed than what you've got going there. Frank's not in that best 23 either.
Also, what does the reserves look like in this scenario?

Impossible to predict ruck merry go round stuff in advance Jim, Reidy hardly an inspired pick though I'll give you that. Newman and Williams come across as types that might prolong their careers a few extra years to me purely because they get by on smarts rather than elite athleticism these days.
But both could well and truly be out of the line up by then.
Walsh, Cody and Cerra are all excellent defensively around stoppage and Robey in theory should be too. I'd be hoping at that stage we'd have moved past Cripps + Hewett being mainstays and move forward with just the one inside bull shovelling it out to a group of runners.

I think you are ignoring the problem though. Itās better for everyone if GC have to match Uwland with say pick 6 and 13 than 5 picks in the mid second round. It takes two top end picks out of the draft. It means West Coast for example have two higher quality players to pick from at pick 15 and again at 21. This is the whole reason for the changes not about the team matching bids. I think you are only looking at it from the team who has the FS or academy player, which should really be the least important player in the whole thing considering they can actually make the choice to match or not.
Itās pretty simple though. If you canāt trade down very close to the pick a bid is made at then you arenāt paying market value.
