Now work with me here as this is something I haven’t thought through.
Let’s take Academy & FS out of the draft. Let’s push trade week back a week. You have your draft order set.
You prelist your academy & father sons. The AFL with their secret herbs and spices goes to to the prelist
Brisbane - ok so you want father son A. You have pick 18, pick 36 etc.
AFL goes to Brisbane he is a top 10 prospect - you can have him, your pick 18 this year is gone, your 36 is gone and your next year first slides to end of first round
Brisbane takes it or leaves it
GC you have listed 2 players in the top 10 of the draft, we are taking your next 2 firsts and this years second
GC takes it or leaves it.
Or
You list the players the AFL comes back with a point value on the players. You then have the trade period to sort out those points & the picks that it takes up are removed prior to draft night.
Or
Carlton list Cody Walker, we are willing to give up for him Pick 13 + 16. AFL goes no we want your second too, Carlton no we will give you are 3rd. AFL okie dokie.
There are clear problems with this too, but if they are never in the pool, it’s sorted by trade period everyone knows what they need and the draft night is less of a farce of bids and slides etc and it’s all clean.
You’d almost need a board where 18 clubs sit around it to discuss the players value or an AFL recruiting department that access values.
Problem is it’s open to serious manipulation by the AFL based on which way the wind is blowing each year
But if you’re forcing clubs to trade up, that distorts the market, and can put a club over a barrel.I think people are ignoring what the AFL are trying to achieve. Top picks for top players.
It’s pretty simple really. If you can’t trade up than that shows the value of those picks (as this changes every draft)
He would have been better off throwing darts at a board than what he managed to do in 16,17,18, 19.SOS had the strategy but just terrible talent ID, particularly with midfielders.
There are so many moving parts with the up coming draft. Where does the Dean bid come. Will there be the expected three bids prior for Gold Coast(2) and Brisbane players? To me it makes no sense to use future assets to trade up in this draft.
Better to just take Dean and ison and see what we can get in the futures market.

we should be able to do more this period with 9 and 11 than just Dean and IsonThere are so many moving parts with the up coming draft. Where does the Dean bid come. Will there be the expected three bids prior for Gold Coast(2) and Brisbane players?
We will get change back from our second pick after the bid, mid first to second rounder. An Ison bid is more likely closer to 30 than 20, so our later picks should cover it.
Other than key position depth and developing players, we have smashed the trade period and are wanting for little (bearing in mind Cody Walker in ‘26).
This board will be filled with hypotheticals for trading up, but I will be amazed if we shift picks this year.
I thought he was good in defence at the end of the year, I didn't really rate his forward time. Was ok, but last few games at CHB was decent. He can play there but it has to be a basic role, stick on your man, no zoning off.Ironically Young played his best football for the year up forward.

) and that Harry Dean can develop into the player we all hope him to be (and it wouldn’t hurt if he grew another centimetre or two either).

Only the bold remain on an AFL list...
Only 4 draft picks still at Carlton from Stephen Silvagni...
Only another 6 are still on an AFL list at another club... 4 of those are at St Kilda... Silvagni's new home...
Good rotations for one. Rotations mean run harder for longer and less injuries. So this means we should have good rotations through the midfield and between back pocket and half back and forward flank and forward pocket.I’m hopeful Ollie stays HB but who knows. We have Chesser Ollie Wilson Florent Saad Boyd Carroll Lucas Charleson Flynn Cottrell who can all now play that role or even Wing. Let form dictate
I just like that we have genuine options
Ison may be the wildcard and although unlikely some of Ainsworth best footy was at HB under Dew
As for Walsh I’m not a fan of his ball use from contest and I want to protect his back. I also want game time in middle into Lord Jagga BenC Moir maybe Robey next year
That’s just me
My only query with Walsh is his durabilityGood rotations for one. Rotations mean run harder for longer and less injuries. So this means we should have good rotations through the midfield and between back pocket and half back and forward flank and forward pocket.
Problem with Walsh out of the middle, he is the only fast dynamic midfielder we have. Take him out and one of this teams biggest issues becomes monumentally worse. As for his kicking, he's like Dangerfield, kicks it long, which is ok, just don't want too many guys like this in the team.
Did we all see how bad we were when he was out this year and how much we improved in the last few games when he came back? Walsh is a massive part of our onball group and opposition teams know this and target him because of this. The others are slow paced accumulators, teams aren't that worried about them but Walsh is viewed differently by other teams. He is the one who can run and carry and pounce on a lose ball or run down an opposition player so teams block and body him. The rest aren't worth putting effort into so all focus goes to Walsh.
The only way to protect Walsh is to add another player with the same agility, pace and hurt factor to our midfield because teams will not put work into two players.
We can take Walsh out of the middle and put him on a wing and he will be good but the team will suffer for it.
Smith was recruited to add class, pace and agility to the midfield but he is built like a match stick and will be some time away from being a regular in the middle. Walker next year will help but it will be a similar situation. Ison of course but again they are kids and generally onballers take a while before they can do it at AFL level.
I think our recruiting team are going to be heavily focused on this for next year. Does it mean we open the cap space up and go for Butters or or another with these traits? I think we will be working hard and focusing on this from here on.
I think and hope that come end of 2026 that we will see Cripps as having more time up his sleeve, Camporeale and Lord as good AFL centermen and Hewett and Cerra going fine. With Ison, Walker and Smith coming through strongly and us seeing we have a glut of onball options. I can see us making a trade out of our onball group to bring in the right sort of mature player in there. I think we will be putting Cerra up for trade end of 2026 and trying to wrangle something with our midfield mix. Just my guess.
The only way to look after Walsh is to recruit someone quick and damaging enough where opposition put their focus onto that player and less on Walsh.
Young gets lost when trying to zone off and fit into a team defence structure. He doesn't read the game situations well. That's what you are seeing, he just can't do that. When he is told to stick to his man, a simple role he can do that and was good towards the end of the season doing this. His record one on one is not poor as another poster on here pointed out, it's quite good. Young will be someone who gets us through and I doubt we will be seeing a better player than him come onto our list now.Sorry for mine he’s way too flaky in defence, so many times he gets caught flat footed and ball watching and in the contest is surprisingly weak for someone of his size. I agree we have no other choice in 2026, we have to really hope O’Farrell comes on quickly after his ACL (don’t won’t to reference Andrew McInnes but yes I did) and that Harry Dean can develop into the player we all hope him to be (and it wouldn’t hurt if he grew another centimetre or two either).

Two of those are number 1 picks. Very, very difficulty to screw that up.
People talk about Cripps carrying the load too much, I have never agreed with this as Cripps role, how he is played and how opposition negate him will never change regardless, this is the sort of player he is.My only query with Walsh is his durability

If noone we like this year then try to get some picks in next year's draft

I think so. Will be valuable as Hewett and Cripps age. I think there is a good chance he pushes Cerra out.I still believe Lord can be a Newcombe type and really help this group
Much of his issue was finding players with the right temperament.SOS had the strategy but just terrible talent ID, particularly with midfielders.
That is really a disaster - and not to mention what picks we had to trade out to rectify those draft misses.
Seton, Fisher, Dow, O’Brien and Stocker should be the core of our starting midfield, and at least 1 should be an A grader.
So just because we have 6 first round picks available to us in the next 3 drafts doesn’t mean automatic success but at least Stephen Silvagni is not going to have any say in their selection.
Cerra was really good this year and quite consistent (also finished 3rd in the B&F)I think so. Will be valuable as Hewett and Cripps age. I think there is a good chance he pushes Cerra out.
Yeah and this is why people are worried about us heading the draft route again...
We don't even have a good sample size with Nick Austin because he hasn't had any top 10 picks apart from Jagga who also hasn't even played yet...
I'd say though, it is highly unlikely that our new management team will fluff up so many top picks like Silvagni did... which is why I'm optimistic about our drafting going forward.
I think Cez is underrated (even by me)Cerra was really good this year and quite consistent (also finished 3rd in the B&F)
This is a wild take
Cerra was fine this year, if we had a season where we were 14-9 as opposed to 9-14, people would be happy with his season. Wasn't elite, but it was good.Cerra was really good this year and quite consistent (also finished 3rd in the B&F)
