STATE DRAFT COMBINE

Zac Harding
State: Victoria Country
State League Club: Murray Bushrangers
Community Club: Wodonga Bulldogs
Date of Birth: 01/01/2006
Height: 199cm

A mobile ruckman with an excellent vertical jump and natural speed, Harding uses those assets to become something of an extra midfielder. He was given permission to play as a 19-year-old in both the Coates Talent League and National Championships this season following injury disruptions in his Draft year and grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Harding finished runner-up in the Murray Bushrangers’ best and fairest award after averaging 18.5 disposals, 2.6 marks and 28 hitouts. He was also very impressive playing for Victoria Country at the National Championships, averaging 14.5 disposals, 3.8 tackles and 24 hitouts, featuring among his team’s best players against Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria Metro. Harding went on to make his VFL debut for Carlton throughout the season, before producing eye-catching results in the 20m sprint (2.98 seconds) and running vertical jump (86cm) at the state Draft Combine in Melbourne. Harding’s father Dean played 19 games for Fitzroy in the early 1990s.

Vic Country’s 199cm ruckman Zac Harding showcased why he’s considered one of the premier big men in this year’s draft. Harding racked up a whopping 26 disposals, which is outstanding numbers for a ruckman. He also managed a round-high 27 disposals, along with 5 inside 50s, and 4 tackles. While Cooper Duff-Tytler is widely touted as the top ruck prospect in the 2025 draft class, Harding is proving he’s not far behind.

Not to victory lap (coz tbf I was off in my predictions as well), but it was always odd that people dismissed the possibility of us going after keys when we were linked to a few keys with the Sweid pick and to short mid-fwds/small fwds. Clearly we're less than entirely confident about the current crop.

The idea we were gonna go after some state league inside mid when basically every good team uses starting non-mids as their midfield depth was with the fairies.

Spot on. The chances of plucking an AFL standard midfielder player out of the state leagues at draft time or overlooked draftees is virtually 0. It's always been low and now with the mid season draft it's near 0.

As I've said a million times your playing midfield depth comes from inside the side on the wings and flanks. Not one paced inside C graders playing in the 2nds. If and when we want more mids we will trade for them or use top 30 picks.

We could use a better winger, but the brains trust don't agree. Or at least think on balance it's not worth the resources. Whether they are wrong can only be judged in hindsight.

Also we do need another ruck going forward. Riddle is a ruck/forward at AFL level not a no. 1 (I also think he won't make it. Not stand out athletic and / or strong enough for a key forward and too small to be a no. 1 ruck. Note I have been wrong before.)

Clubs like multiple developing rucks on their list. Bucks spoke about it earlier in the year on SEN. The position is such a crap shoot since you don't know which (if any) will come good you always need multiple developing rucks at any one time.

I think there's enough in the midfield. There's also enough in the small forward department and Scerri makes zero sense to me.

Harding makes more sense ... not sure on his agility, but with his speed and leap he could be a KPP or temu Jackson as much as a pure ruckman. Cox is only a 1 or 2 year stop gap, and who knows how Riddle will go.

I would have liked to see us trial a medium sized (~186-190cm) player who could play as a forward. Someone like Eddie Ford who was cut by North. I don't trust North's judgement/development.

Given state of our list, we can afford to just stash the next best young prospect most likely to make an AFL player in say 3 years time right?
