FREMANTLE has started conversations with Melbourne on a move for wantaway defender Judd McVee, with the club open to moving picks around to help facilitate a deal.
The Dockers are currently due to start the draft with picks No.12 and 33, though McVee's value is expected to fall somewhere in between those initial selections.
But Fremantle is exploring ways to shuffle its top picks in order to satisfy Melbourne in a trade, after McVee requested a move late last month following almost 18 months spent weighing up a call on his future.
"It's still early days," Fremantle list manager David Walls told Continental Tyres AFL Trade Radio.
"We're going to be open to a lot of different scenarios. Obviously, there's a fair bit to play out beforehand. But we'll look to move some picks around to try and find a compromise where both parties are happy."
Melbourne started conversations with McVee around a potential contract extension in 2024, with the defender ultimately opting to return home to Western Australia despite the prospect of a two-year deal to remain at the Demons.
"We're disappointed with that one. We've been trying to recontract Judd since the middle of last year," Melbourne list manager Tim Lamb said.
"We'll wait and see. We've had a couple of quick chats with Fremantle about that and we'll work through that over the coming days." – Riley Beveridge

If we hadn't won the Weller trade we would be pretty much stuffed.
Getting maximum value from every onfield and off-field asset the club holds should always be the goal.

It's quite common for audiences to see a player kick the ball and turn away from the game to say "isn't he getting a lot of it?" and miss that he's being allowed to be loose so him team mates use him.. because he is so poor by foot that it creates turnovers between the arcs.

The Weller trade accounts for 1 player on our list. One, out of 44.
So far we've won the Clark and Jackson trades, and even accounting for Jye's underwhelming year we've edged the Cerra trade.
Why would North tell him to look for options then?
Just a minor matter but the pick is currently 33 (not 32) and likely pushed back to 34 shortly. He is a talented player who was impacted a little by injury in 2025. Played 65 games is young and has very good footskills. Blake Acres is a terrible comparison. We massively lowballed him and clearly weren’t fussed about him staying or going. Melbourne apparently only offered 2 years but they wanted to keep him and were in a position to negotiate a new contract with Steven King as new coach.
Pick 34 is not high enough. Pick 25-29 is around the mark. We will do something that gets that over line. Throw in a sweetener or look to trade to upgrade pick 34.
Throwing 34 on the table walking away Craig David style isn’t the way to negotiate.

I can only assume Brisbane is working out a contract that will trigger the band 1 secret herbs and spices. They have insider helping (Wink wink Greg Swan…) and bot a dollar more than is needed to trigger that band 1.

Ah Gold Coast. The club that oscilates between blessing us and f**king us.
Blake Acres is just an example.
There are literally heaps out there where if a player is out of contract, the team that has the player rarely receives ‘fair’ and just receives what the buying team can offer.
We can’t offer 25-29. We don’t have that pick. So, why should we have to attempt to extract value to satisfy them??
I feel like I’m taking crazy pills and everyone is missing my point and quoting that Acres is a spud etc.
Rarely do teams ‘try’ to compromise when they have the upper hand.
What I’m saying is put 33 on the table. It’s then up to Melbourne to work the edges. Let them suggest 33 and a F2 for McVee and a F4 or whatever.
It 100% shouldn’t be on us to get a pick that they want.
