Also being so called easy/flexible at the trade table will make it easier for agents to recommend their star free agent players to join your club btw, Essendon for example only recruited one big name star to their club during Dodoro's reign (Brendan Goddard) and that was because he was a free agent.
Being a hard ass at the trade table hasn’t stopped Adelaide from getting big names coming over like Rankine.

I remember these guys absolutely reaming the Giants for some bum called Jackson Hately, a former first rounder, didn’t affect these guys at all in getting any player they wanted.
Didn't Wallsy also engineer the fleecing of Geelong for Jordan Clark (which imo was low key one of the best value bargain trades in the last 10 years) ?
This is hindsight hero stuff here.

Trade was overs for a guy that wasn’t getting games and not best 22.

Just because Clark turned into what he has turned into does not mean the trade at the time was a good deal.

I ask again, when are we going to get on the favourable end for being easy traders? Still waiting for it to happen.

Surely West Coast blackmailed us and said they're going after McVee if we don't help get this done
Doesn’t work that way.

McVee already nominated us, so West Coast trying to get involved and “steal” him just does not happen.

I saw someone on reddit say "looks like we gave away pick 33 but im not going to melt over something so small"

I nearly had a ****ing aneurysm
What’s crazier is 33, 46 & 50 are right in Wallsy’s hitting zone, first time in his life he’s looked at dessert and said no thanks (it’s a low blow I know, firmly tounge in cheek comment)

Here’s my best guess.

Brisbane and Eagles couldn’t quite come to terms for Starcevich. The Allen compensation was compromised. There’s a rush as free agency closes Friday.

They needed a third team to do a trade as a place holder type scenario. To ensure everyone was kept in line.

Freo came in. Saved the deal. It will net Eagles that 2nd pick for Allen.

The ‘rewards’ are yet to come. May need that Allen deal to come through, not that we will be linked to that in any way.

Literally nothing else makes sense.

Brisbane could’ve just done Starcevich with Eagles.

We could’ve found a way to deal McVee.

The rush has to be linked to free agency ending Friday.

It’s weird how that free agency deal is yet to be completed.

It’s all linked.

Otherwise we’ve just helped out 2 teams for absolutely no reason AND don’t give me the ‘we needed to find a pick for McVee’ rubbish.

There’s a second part to this. I’m guaranteeing it.
quid pro quo...watch this space

You know minds have been lost when people start boldng parts of their posts.
Not seeing any melts though.

Just people asking the question of why we’re such easy traders.

Also that trade effectively helps both Brisbane and West Coast avoid the Free Agency rules and how they should work - Brisbane get compo for losing Starcevich, even though that compensation should be bringing in Draper, and WCE's compo stays at Pick 2 for Allen. The extra picks Brisbane get also help them get points for Annable.

We've just effectively helped two clubs, the reigning premiers, and also our cross town rivals gain a massive competitive leg up and we've benefitted in no way at all.

If 33 was never going to get McVee done, do it another way instead of that crap that just rolls over to help other teams.

If Freo doesn't believe there will be value in this draft after the top 30 then there's not going to be many/any clubs who do so the value of those picks aren't as subjective, they may be objectively, league wide, trash.

If we are picking one player in the draft, Rodriguez, and then waiting for a Whan bid before ducking out with extra rookie spots to have train ons then so be it. The end result is the same, McVee will play for Freo, Rodriguez plays for Freo and Whan plays for Freo.

I've always subscribed to the theory that if you want the player, just pick them with what you've got but I know many here want better value, selling the pick for a later one and something else - but ultimately the end result here is the same.

We may have a late pick, we probably won't. The players late in the draft usually don't make it and even less do in teams performing.

We might be tight on players to delist next year, probably better not to have 2 year contracts on so many.

If we plan to take Whan, there is no value.

We should have asked for a future pixk

I would argue you can only evaluate trades properly with hindsight, otherwise we should get pick one from west coast for banners, because banners has played 100 games at afl level and all the draftees are yet to play.

Clearly we projected Clark would be a good player for us, which is a critical part of trading, it isn’t separate.

That’s like buying a house in an up and coming suburb that you think is going to have much higher growth in house price value than average over the coming years.
But then paying an extra few hundred thousand dollars up front, over and above market value at the time of sale and then turning around a few years later and saying “look I was right! What great foresight by me”. You still unnecessarily gave more value than you should have to the original seller, for no material reason.

For me in the AFL you can only evaluate trades on the day of the trade. everyone is betting on future performance. No one know what will happen in future.

For example, if collingwood traded Nick Daicos for pick 50 tomorrow and he went on to play only 15 more AFL games because he did his ACL 3 or 4 times, or went off the rails like JUH, they’d look like geniuses in 5 years time.
It’s doesn’t change the fact that it’s still a bad trade by Collingwood because all the info to hand, right here right now indicates he is worth 3 first round picks at least.

Currently we are just above average in every metric you can measure a club with. On field & off, although Snuff might disagree with our off field. Ie trading.
I agree we are above average in nearly every metric. I wouldn’t call us better than average in trading though, agree with snuff there.

The issue however is that there is about 5 or 6 other teams that are also above average in nearly everything.

I don’t really care how we compare to North or Essendon anymore. We have moved well beyond that now. It matters how we stack up against Hawks, Geelong, Brisbane, Suns, etc. that’s who we need to be better than over the next few years to get a flag. On and off the field. Some of those clubs have inherent advantages we simply do not have access to, so it’s probably not enough to be even just as good as them, we have to be better than them to compensate for their advantages.

Please AFL, save us from ourself.

Surely a future pick is involved, still my mind boggles this morning

No media picking up yet how bad it is as a trade, yet
We are completely irrelevant in the AFL landscape and expected to bend over to accept a pineapple when it benefits the big clubs like Brisbane
