Our original pick 13 dropping to 19 according to two phantoms done this afternoon (FoxSports and AFL). We started with 11 but Oscar Allen and TDK fetched top 10 compo pushing it back 13. It is with WCE now.

Our current pick 20 dropping to 25/26.
So 26 selected in the first round? lol

Looking like the first round could be nearly half the draft.

Doubt we get past 55 picks on Thursday. There's talk some clubs might re-draft delisted players in the National Draft too btw.

For context there was 71 last year.

Wouldn't be that surprised if there's SSP train ons league wide than National Draft picks (of course only half the train ons actually end up on lists).

There is three further picks after ours which could well fall between 25-27. So could be 30 picks in the first round. Docker82 is right 55-58 picks seems around the mark, and therefore half the ND done on night one. GWS which currently has 12,35,73 are going to trade out 35 to GCS at start of draft and select Jake Stringer it seems with that last pick so really 1 live pick. Port which have 49, 69 and 74 are trading out 49 at start of draft to GCS and then very likely to pass on the remaining picks so no live picks.

I missed these trades, who has been reporting these?

I guess an F2 for that 35 and maybe an F4 for 49?

or F3 for 35 since this draft aint rated and GWS weren't going to use the pick?

edit: Bombers F3 seems perfect but maybe GC pay slight overs and give up an F2, not the Dees one though

double edit: See that Cal has reported in his other section of the phantom
GC paying premiums to get these points IMO
F2 for 35
F3 for 48
F3 for 49

actually I guess some of those could be 2027 picks, so who bloody knows, just gotta wait and see, not the 3rd rounders atleast as GC don't hold one in 2027, unless they are getting them from other trades done on the night straight away.

They should just have a 10 minute period to show the trades at the start at this rate, Looks like there will be 6 or 7 trades while pick 1 is on the clock, crazy

Mason Cox is officially unofficially a Docker, weird times.

Not a fan. However.

1. Only has to be marginally more competent than Reidy.
2. Is experienced stop-gap until riddle is ready.
3. Brings experience door the young group at peel.
4. Brings marketing opportunities.
5. Is cheap.

I don’t like it, but I can understand it.

Mason Cox - It’s a huge WTF from me. The whole ‘stop gap’ call only makes sense if the bloke is somewhat competent. Expecting Cox to do anything at age 35 when there’s been clear signs he’s done is like someone expecting Fyfe to help out if they picked him up as depth. Horrible comparison, but when you’re done you’re done and Cox is DONE.

That said - cheap blah blah, so for that reason it’s a whatever.

I hope he never plays for Freo. It would mean we’ve been healthy. I’d think we’d need 2 injuries for him to get a game. Would likely need 2 of Darcy, Jackson and Voss to be injuries for him to get a game. If one injured we can cover without him.

Also wears sunglasses at night so his future must be bright, which is also Freo’s future.

In all seriousness, I met Mason at the USAFL finals in Wisconsin back in 2018. He was a super chill dude and let me take a pic with him.

He'll be on minimum coin with almost no down side for the club. Gives Riddle some more development time and should Darcy/Dogga go down with an injury, he's a mature body that can fill in the gap. Until I see another ruck we can sign, I'm fine with him signing.

Tom Campbell is just as old and twice as shite and still keeps a spot on an AFL list.

Wouldn't be complaining unless we offer him multiple years tbh.

I’m still of the opinion we operate best running the one ruck, one chop out but clearly JL is very determined to make the land of the giants thing work and being the system guy he is and Darcy being one gust of wind away from a knee reco at any given time, I don’t hate it. Obviously past his best but is a tap ruckman, can split aerial contests and can provide a target up forward, that’s all he needs to do.

Slim chance he’s going to be playing much in the firsts anyway and at the very least he can have a helping hand in Riddle’s development.

Hope we can see Cox, Voss and Bolton in the forward 50 just once, would be compelling viewing. The three am-egos.

Don't hate Mason coming over as cover while Nicholls grows into his body. We only need a few games out of him for 18-24 months. It also sends the message to Nicholls that we expect him to get these opportunities in a couple of years so hopefully it keeps him around.

Bringing in a younger ruck may have backfired if it disillusioned Nicholls.

If you examine it in a vacuum Cox is a decent recruit. Premiership and big game experience, stop gap ruck/forward option fills a depth need and provides experience for the playing group to develop with, coverage for season ending injuries to any one of the tall forwards or rucks. Premiership sides are built on that sought of bargain basement depth recruiting. Honestly 2 years is fine as well: His first year he's the next man up for ruck and KPF injury cover whilst Riddle develops, year 2 Riddle should start taking over that whilst Cox holds the fort at Peel.

The distorting factor here is the same for an earworm one hit wonder: Massively overhyped, cringeworthingly fawned over and well and truly overplayed at its peak. Because of this we tend to associate it (him) with our reaction to his hype and downfall rather than objectively assessing it (him) and how it fits into the playlist (playing group) that you're building. It's a nasty cognitive bias that good list builders don't have but as a fan base we're quite worried about being made fun over it.

End of the day this is a depth recruit as we enter our finals/premiership window. If anything I'm encouraged that our list management priorities have now switched to that style of recruiting, even if Cox ends up as a bust (which, objectively, would make f*** all difference anyway)

I like it because he seems crazy competitive, Voss like.
Tick for me

This is simply not worth overthinking. We needed an option to cover off the low probability-extreme disaster scenario where Darcy and Jackson are both unavailable for selection. There's no way we'll play Cox as a main ruck if Luke Jackson is available (given how good Jackson has been as a sole ruck), and it seems pretty unlikely we'd play Cox as a ruck-forward either—we are already so tall in our forward line with Amiss, Treacy, Voss.
