Honestly think the Cox decision is a really good one. We are only giving up a rookie selection spot to get him. With Darcy's injury history it's great insurance in my opinion. Plus he can play forward so you can also play Darcy and Cox in the same team if required. Biggest bonus is that it gives Riddle 2 years to improve before we have to rely on him as a main backup. We really have recruited well to meet list needs apart from a decent skilful winger. Hopefully someone already on the list can fill that role. Johnson improving his decision making would help a lot and Wagner stepping up would also be huge. y

Luke Jackson could be the answer. Plus NOD can play that role if we get injuries. Id prefer a genuine winger as our SSP spot.
Jackson, Johnson, Erasmus, Young and Nod (in height order) is enough big inside mids. One will be squeezed out to peel. We need to also find midfield time for Serong, Brayshaw, Bolton, Reid and Switta.

I am happy with our draft haul but how the hell did we let Fred slip to the Eagles. I honestly thought we gave the Eagles free draft capital as a handshake deal, it turns out Walls just gave them the picks for no flipping reason. Did we really need three small forwards? They have got a steal here.

Speaking of Fyfe and Brodie reckon we should try find a bigger inside mid with that last list spot.

Think we're one short this year.
I find it difficult to see the world where the best state league/delisted inside mids out there have any sort of real shot at inside mid minutes for us. Much like most teams, our best "depth" inside mids are just guys competing in other spots. Serong, Brayshaw, Young, Bolton, Jackson, Ras, Johnno, NOD, JOM, Wagner. And this is before raising guys who haven't played major inside minutes ever/in a long time at AFL level, but could do a job there if asked. Half of those are big bodies.

When Neale got injured, who took those minutes? Bailey, Rayner, Levi Ashcroft. Bont goes down and no Treloar? Time for Freijah, Sanders, and West to shine. Will Day out? Now Josh Ward steps up for those inside minutes.

Not necessarily the most opposed to a charity list spot being extended to the winner of a mid off btwn like Parfitt, Setterfield, Hobbs, Phillips, whoever else. But I like my depth players versatile (which is why I think the Mason Cox signing is great), and I like train-on spots extended to u22s that have a real chance of cracking into the 23 in time.

For that last list spot, I'd rather either a project tall to put pressure on our relatively large contingent of OOC talls (Voss, OMac, Riddle, Nicholls, Davies, Murphy) or an outside, half back/wing type that has proper proper burners (Fahey, Lual).

Sweid looks more midfielder but definitely has some forward nous. When we selected Serong he was listed as mid/forward.

Whan a steal at Cat-B rookie.

Fred would be handy but I have heard from many sources we were very keen on Kickett. Getting him on the rookie list is perfect.

I guess we could have made a pick in PSD or selected Rodrigues late in ND but given the opportunities to do so that weren’t taken I’m going to assume he was not a requirement nor a priority from Walls.

Yeah fair enough, but if we were so keen on him we would have picked him earlier. The main point is that if we didn't give WC those free picks we could have had both players.

Our midfield depth is thin now. There's almost nothing there outside of our best 23 and draftees added in the last few days. Johnson and Wagner the only two other mids on our list that didn't play against Gold Coast. And Fyfe is gone and JOM will be in twelve months.

Too many talls to develop properly on our list already IMO. Cutting some of those talls next year only puts us back to where our list should be. Understand why we've drafted a few more than we normally carry but now isn't the time to add more. Think most of them are developing okay so I don't think we cut anymore than one or two.

Seemed more about list spots on the main list. He didn't want to go beyond 36 if he didn't have to. Very good draft next year by all reports

Missed the part where WC used those free picks to get Fred? Could've sworn we passed twice while we still had a list spot and they didn't

Put me down for one mature body onballer just to fill a role if absolutely needed. The rest of the list feels pretty perfectly balanced except for likely one KPD too many. Id probably only swap them for one more tall up front though so potato potahto

I see both Sweid and Murray as the types that can play both mid or small forward but neither as the main stoppage mid or genuine small forward. Sweid is slightly more mid and Murray more forward.

Like we drafted those two because I think that's the sort of player I'd add to the team now the 23rd man is no longer the sub.

Just think we need one more mid in the squad and wanted to use at least two of our rookies spots for a little extra depth.

Could have had both regardless. Chose not to.
Exactly. The trade with WC and Brisbane for me was more about giving freebies and a leg up to Brisbane.

If we’re serious about sustained deep run at Finals we don’t want give any freebies or assistance to Brisbane.

They ended up with better picks and more points. We essentially gifted them pick 45 and 51.

Yes 34 was tossed in for WC but I feel that was needed to make the trade go ahead.

Fred was available at 39/40. He was also available at 58 or whatever picks thereafter we passed on. He was also available at PSD. Given WC passed on Wes Walley as CatB I doubt Kickett was on their radar. We had ample opportunity to get Fred but didn’t and I reckon Kickett would have been available at pick 8 rookie draft.

VFL guns Jacob Dawson (34.5 disposals, 16.5 contested possessions, 9.3 clearances, 4.5 inside 50s, 3.3 tackles) and Tom Blamires (24.5 disposals, 4.1 tackles, 2.5 clr) might be handy SSP train ons to look at also....
