Different kickers have different preferences from where the want to kick. Some prefer the left hash and some prefer the right, those decisions could also be influenced by the weather conditions on that day.

So depending on which closest hash the previous play finished on, the team may elect to run an additional play to finish on the kickers preferred hash .
