I’m a broken record on this but it seems some on here think history will suddenly be defied and an uncontracted player won’t get to their club of choice.

It doesn’t matter what Port have or don’t have. If NAS wants to play for Port. He gets to Port.

The system is broken. And it’s why I feel very sorry for the Saints in this scenario.

There will be posturing, slammed laptops, threats even.

But, at the last minute, a bullshit deal -probably involving future firsts and pick swaps with third parties — will be done — because they always do.

what I can also see happening is the saints kicking up a huge stink about the NGA academy farce re Cochrane. Here’s hoping.

Some of the potential deals aren’t even on the table because the acquiring club can’t satisfy at trade. NWM will extend with Saints in that circumstance and your 100% success rate will remain. That’s what you’re ignoring, some don’t even get off the ground because the gap is too wide. They’re only announced when they know they’re close enough.

NWM in our side on a wing with Dan Curtin on the other wing both hitting up our forwards and racking up quaity possessions between the arcs could be the difference in winning a flag. You trade our 2 x 1sts (25 & 26) and add in a player like a hinge or berry for example (assuming the player involved is happy to move etc). Make it happen if there is a chance
With how we use wings and hug the boundary line so much I actually think NWM would be an epic waste of talent for us there.

Laird out and Curtin the opposite wing of NWM back flank

Difference being the Dogs didn't really want Smith or his baggage.

St Kilda dont want to lose the best player on their list
St Kilda have to play hardball here. If they take unders for their best player their long-suffering supporters will be devastated. It is going to put a massive hole in their list and will cost them memberships.

NWM is worth a top 5 pick and a pick between 10 and 18. Anything less should not be acceptable to the St Ki football dept.

It's why there needs to be open trading of players in their first 6 years

You want to leave? No problem Brisbane offered us this so off you go

I don’t think you can be bouncing kids on league minimum plus match payments around the country. It’s not American sports where they’re getting million$ in their rookie years.

That's ignoring that what North actually got was picks 2, 3 and 40 for JHF and pick 1.

Ports deal hinged on WC trading out 2, 40 and Rioli for 8, 12 and some future picks. Massively undervalued 2. Not sure there's another club going to do that.

North giving up a contracted pick 1, and another pick 1, for picks 2 and 3 isn't exactly good though is it? They still ended up getting screwed there IMO given downgrading from pick 1 to 3 should get you at least another first round pick in most drafts

Either way you slice it though, Port ended up getting the deal done for less than market value, managed to wrangle some swaps and stuff to slightly improve it, but at the end of the day North accepted unders. And there's no reason Port couldn't do that again

They wouldn't be on league minimum though.

The buying club still needs to offer said player a deal good enough to leave.

It’s a fixed base determined by the round you were selected, it’s basically league minimum in 3-4 bands. A first rounder base is about $20k more than 2nd rounder from memory. And late picked draftees are absolutely on league minimum. Unless there’s still a rookie contract that’s a bit less, but that wouldn’t be by bugger all anyway.

No. You cant trade draft picks on the night

Once they are in your system and they are approaching their first contract extension and they wish to leave - then its up to the club to decide where

Its mostly aimed at 3-6 year draftees

I think youre missing the point.

If a kid wants to leave in his first couple of years, he's leaving because someone else has offered him more cash, in general anyway.

JHF didn't just come home because he didnt like the odd ice bath.

If youre leaving because someones offering you more cash, then that shouldnt hamstring the club you're leaving.

And what if it’s a player like Jarryd Lyons who’s not getting league opportunity and has been presented with league minimum contract but has an offer for $250k elsewhere? You reckon it’s fair that he just goes where the trade pick is best? That’s absurd.

$250k you say? Thats more than most people earn and as a youngster with probably no dependents, if they couldn't live comfortably on that wherever they are then something is really wrong

Why not? Just end the trade system then. Open movement with no recompense to the affected team

Bring it on

I agree - you don't waste that much money and talent on the wings.

I'd have NWM on the half back pushing into the midfield, and Curtin as a marking forward who also pushes into the midfield. Get them near the ball and in position to impact.

But that's not going to be all the situations. There'd be players leaving for more opportunity or genuinely wanting to go home. What I probably don't understand is why pick on the younger players, if you think clubs should be able to trade players wherever they want, why pick on that, on average, earn the least.

I think it should be open slather TBH, players hold a lot of power in the AFL that they don't in other sports.
