Maybe also as part of his education to show him where he stands vis a vis men and what his strengths are and what he needs to work on. Great idea IMO.

It may be an attempt to convince him to stay. It also may be that he is a big kid and has always relied on his size in his age group, and this is to show him not to coast, but that he may need to develop more than just strength for the future.

I hope so, the delisting season is almost upon us - and it'd be good to see what they have before they're gone.

Well Dattoli gats a chance this week - but no-one else. Should each new draftee be handed a dislaimer "Welcome to the Swans, you may have been drafted but it's extremely unlikely you'll gat a chance in the 1's. Sorry for wasting 2 years of your life - but that's the AFL" - just so they know what the reality of the situation is?

Not totally crazy. Tim Watson was playing senior VFL footy for Essendon at 15. I recall a few precocious Swans players getting Senior guernseys at 16 in the 60s and 70s.

Yeah in the olden days. Not nearly as common these days. I'm not saying I disagree with it, just that McCartney getting a guernsey is a big, big call.

I think Leo Lombard played in the 2023 VFL grand final for Gold Coast as a 16 year old. (though he was about to turn 17). It may depend on how physically developed the player is.

But I don't think it is too unusual playing a VFL game at the end of your bottom age year. Because the U18 AFL academy team plays against a VFL side at the start of their draft year.

Why is the issue with him playing ! it's good for us
The late Ronnie James from Willy played in a GF at 14 before going on to play for the dogs
Sadly he lost his life in a water ski accident in his prime

Young McCarthy must be a decent lump of a kid to be playing key position against VFL opponents. The fact that his old man is happy at least makes me confident he is physically ready and will be safe playing VFL - this is the most important thing at the end of the day.

Not sure what the fuss is about. Braeden Campbell has been playing in the seniors for years and he's presumably still 16.

In fairness, Leonardo Lombard's journey to greatness was always going to start when he was young, like his fellow historical legends Alexander the Great and Augustus.

From up close, they look like dead set plodders. Sellers decided at 36 points down to blame it all on the umps after his teammate got done holding the ball calling him a C-bomb loud enough to hear from the team stop. One of their forwards dead set looks like a bloke playing ressies down your local club that spent the whole off season sinking beers and eating Christmas leftovers.
