Just trying to bump up his trade value....Sounds like Sydney really wanted to hold onto Buller
Hopefully we've found a good one
Why recruiting Oliver won't be an issue for LongWhat happens to Long’s role next year is absolutely secondary to anything we can do to improve our chances of winning the flag in 2026.
Who gives a crap if “Long’s development” takes a backseat. Why do we develop players? To win flags. Let’s just go win a flag.
Exactly !! This idea that we pick him up for peanuts as if we’re Melbourne’s only option is absurd.

I feel this way too - reckon Melbourne has proven itself to be a horrible club with a toxic culture. They whole Trac stuff of last season for example - I know they've cleaned out their closet now, but his bad boy days are from that era. I feel like he'll be a different, far more professional player under our culture.Oliver is giving me hogan vibes. Reckon he will repay the faith to whoever takes him.
ok too if we win next 3 flags! At $600k 5 is absolutely fine. That will be less than the average wage by then.

To me, there's question marks on Long's role regardless. I think he has to become the defensive mid. He doesn't get to the ball first often enough or have the pace to break away for the other roles.I’m all for it at a bargain price but there’s definitely a big ? on Long’s role in my mind if Oliver comes in for a few reasons.
Long’s kicking is poor and he’s been justifiably instructed to handball first. Oliver is in a similar vein, so I worry about the overall balance of kicking skills in the middle and the very very obvious pathway it will create which will be too easy to counter (ie everyone handballs to Nick every time).
There’s also the centre bounce (or I should say centre ball up) rotations it will take away from him. Pretty clear from our late season calls that Beau will continue to build in the middle and in particular in that area. With Pendles logically getting some time there as defensive mid and ideally Perryman starting to build there too (please), let alone Sidey and Crisp on the sides it really restrict numbers. I don’t think Long is the guy to cover the offensive runs from Nick and Jordy like Pendles and Pez can.
If he doesn’t perfect his forward/HF craft, Ned could be playing 2s at multiple points during the year. That’s what happens if you lack versatility, which both Long and Oliver do but one is just the better player without a doubt.
If you think the “market” didn’t influence the deals I can’t agree. You obviously weren't following us when the Pies had to push out Treloar and Grundy.
How about the absolute shit-eating grin on Edmund here.

He doesn’t have the smarts to be that defensive mid. We have the rolled gold option sitting in our back 7 who has that correct blend of defensive mindset, ball winning and leadership to bring it all together and it’ll be his role sometime soonTo me, there's question marks on Long's role regardless. It does seem that way to me (the latter part), but I’m not sure about Long’s smarts. Need to see him trialled in other roles for meHe doesn’t have the smarts to be that defensive mid. so 6 and 17 equals very roughly three late first rounders. Butters is worth more on age alone. Interesting view of players worth. The contract $ seems high but that is my age and slow adjustment. Petracca also stated he was willing to take a $ shave. You’re being facetious, but let me spell it out. You can never have too many leaders.we’ve got a captain………….
………….
It does feel that way. Leppa’s wry grins are making me a bit too hopeful that we might have a potential A grade mid fall into our lapsThis has got he's coming to Collingwood "if we want him" written all over it. If we declare, after doing our due diligence, that we want him, he will nominate us, and it will get done.
In Longs case teams don’t like poor disposals of the backline. The damage is too great. It would be interesting. Why recruiting Oliver won't be an issue for Long
- We have a 5 man bench next year and notoriously, Oliver plays just over 70% TOG
- Pendlebury in my opinion will start to pull back his mid-role - his role is a defensive mid which Long could take.
- Long during periods last year spent time outside of midfield - it's in his benefit to develop this - if there's one thing we can see its pure mids lose their value if they aren't elite
That’s the only other role unfortunately. We only secured him because Hawthorn noticed very quickly he’s not a forward, he’s nowhere near a good enough ball user for our back 7 and we don’t tag. I can see a scenario where we hold Perryman back from the midfield and give Long a go with Pendles still in the team, but I have no confidence in that working with Oliver also in the mix. Too slow.It does seem that way to me (the latter part), but I’m not sure about Long’s smarts. Need to see him trialled in other roles for me
Sorry, I didn’t mean outside of the midfield line for Long. I more meant playing that defensive role alongside different lineups of midfield partners from Daicos, McCreery, De Goey and the like. That’s the only other role unfortunately. I ain’t on no train yet. I got one leg over the barb wire fence ready to jump onto the station. Just need that due diligence to pass through. Then totally on board. This has got Oliver's coming to Collingwood "if we want him" written all over it. I think you're right. But either way, where does that leave Ned? He's not yet a first choice for any of the stoppage roles. He's rotation. He doesn’t have the smarts to be that defensive mid.
