List Mgmt. 2025 Trade/FA Thread (Cont’d)

I suspect with the addition of Buller and McCarthy, Howes will be shifted to defence, which is why we’re not looking for another key defender in the short term
Always a balancing act between development and depth. Sounds like they prefer the development path next year, with those three plus West Smit and Steene our other young talls. And Reef returns too. I’m fine with that . Hopefully Buller makes an immediate impact and the rest can keep building.

I understand that the club has indicated that DFA would not be looked at prior to the draft. From my couch this is a disappointment. There is something about discards such as Phillips, Hobbs, Clohsey, Stevens and Hollands. The list needs top end talent not list cloggers. Difficult. Turning poo into gold is more than just polishing.
Does it really indicate that we won’t be taking part in DFA though? It’s better to not mention anything and end up picking a player verses saying we’ll be involved in DFA and not picking anyone.

It’s already known every club will be involved in the draft + some in the rookie.
I think it’s still a wait and see.

How many DFA's actually make it. We all know Hollands' class as a player. He is still only 23. If we believe we can turn him around, why wouldn't we take him. One year with triggers. Some have mentioned risk v reward. The reward could be huge. The risk....one year at not much cost. Others have mentioned his influence on the playing group. FFS, they are all men with, one would expect, well developed brains able to make informed decissions, surrounded by like minded players and mentors.
Others just have closed minds to those with sins of the past.
If, and I stress if, we were to draft him, it would be because wiser heads with more intel than any of us have done their due dilligence and deemed it fitting to give this young man (he is a human being with human frailties) another chance to fulfil his vocation.

I think this is a super naive take.

We have many young men on our list who are basically just kids and prone to risk taking and dumb decisions like every young man that age.

You throw a drug addict into a big group with easy access to drug supplies and things can very easily go very wrong.

I dont know... is he a drug addict, or a drug user, or an x drug use.

Important distinctions.

didnt dane swan acknowledge he had a play during h/a seasons? Im sure there are/were many others

Just think broad labelling, without true knowledge of a situation is a little short sighted - worth the risk to at least investigate

Leppa has stated midfielder and KF (Buller). He is currently content with backline resources. So Blight would appear to be a long shot. But it does not rule anything absolutely out and there is always train on after the draft. We shall see.
Where has it been reported Leppa is “ content with backline resources”?
Unless he has plans for Howes, Smit, or Steene to play back then we have little choice but to replace Dean IMO.

I think we'll have a train on key defender of some sort. Reef will be good but we shouldn't expect too much after coming back from injury.

My comment is he is a risk of negatively influencing the young men on our list, do you disagree?

I have no problem looking into options, just reading about him it seems he’s been in rehab for months and blues shoved him out the door despite a 2026 contract. Put 2 and 2 together and he’s probably not someone you want on your list

mentioned it during his interview during trade period (or after, I can't recall which interview it was). They were content with the defensive options, especially with reef coming back. They werent concerned with the short term, but it was more medium-longer term they would look at some stage.

Not exactly saying so but eluded to our backline here at approx 3:02

Is he really thou?
Yet to be convinced.
Admittedly he has never had his shit together as you say.
Time will tell I guess…
Nah he is. He’d have probably gone number 1 in his draft year if not for the ACL injury and he’s played some decent enough footy for a guy that’s flirted with being an AFL professional.

Time won’t tell though. He won’t get a lifeline and once he loses the support that comes with being a full time athlete he won’t make it back.

Interview during trade period. I was surprised.

I don't think he was lying, but was interesting saying we were content with out defensive stocks only after pursuing Silvagni and losing out. We may be content, doesn't mean we still might go back to the search.

The old boring trade for need, draft the best available. Silvagni and May were considered during trade period but the higher needs were forward and midfielder. We shall see.

That sounds Extremely Possible

Could we been thinking about Blight IF the Buller trade did not happen?

Silvagni would have been a walk up start and was a free agent. It’s more than reasonable to pitch at him. Doesn’t mean we have to look elsewhere for experience having missed out on him…

Only comment I’ll make on Hollands is that, to me, he hasn’t really accepted why he has been let go. I doubt Carlton would be paying out his contract without an understanding of what his mental issues are.
I would think there’s a lot more to it, and maybe he is still refusing to accept it.

No doubt he has some talent. But I suspect Gold Coast were happy to let him go relatively cheaply and the Blues have had enough.

So Carlton has confirmed that Elijah Hollands will be looked at for possible training chances in the upcoming pre-season.
Maybe another club will offer him the chance to train with them over summer.
My money is on Adelaide.

The Dean replacement is McInnes

Smit was played back last tear to learn the ropes although with Cox gone I’d be hoping that he’ll spend a lot more time in the ruck this year

Between Reef, Howes, Steene, Smit, McCarthy, Buller, West and Cochran I’m sure they’ll figure out what the VFL tall lineup will look like. Not sure adding another is an ideal mix

The experience level between Dean and McInnes as a back man is huge. But Dean was not up to it. We don’t have the games to judge McInnes as a backman. The opportunity for an additional backman is there at the draft/sign-on periods. There is also MSD if more is required because of in season issues.
