That’s one of the unknowns that the club will be thinking about.
When another club is willing to pay $700k for a star to play for another team, there has to be a pretty big reason.
I feel like of all clubs, we would be familiar with the many reasons why that may be

We blew up our salary cap and had no choice.
I don’t believe Melbourne has done that.

They have multiple midfielders on over $1m a year, and the premier ruck of the generation who is also likely on a fair bit of coin. Yet they are in no place to compete - they are better off cutting them loose and trying to reshape the team

All in on the Oliver train provided Collingwood do their due dilligence (which Leppa already said they would). We don't have the capital to get anyone in their peak. Oliver was a top 5 player in the comp and he is now priced very low and still only 28.
This is a risk that we should take and good clubs will back their culture. We would get him likely on a reduced contract and has scope to improve. Has been in a toxic environment for several years and wanted out on other years as well.
Would have loved Jesse Hogan and I don't want to hear another heartbreak either like Steve Johnson almost making it to us but failed a medical.

Not saying we just take him, but I trust the club and if they think he is worth the punt, I will be very happy about the decision

For sure, those deals for Trac and Oliver were insane.

I'm reliably told that Clarry's clearance numbers would be #2 behind Nick this year, can someone confirm.
Just looked it up - he was 25th in the league for total clearances this year. In his best years he was number 1. He's an awesome ball winner. There's no doubt that as an on-field player he would make us better.

The new ruck rules will benefit players like Oliver as well I feel. More predictability on the ball drop.

There's more positives to getting him than not. Take the risk.
Will also benefit bigger stronger ruckman.
Good for Hawks, Freo and North.

Might need to get Darcy to beef up a bit.

I arbitrarily filtered to 18+ games to try and weed out, and see he was also 7th in hard ball gets, 11th for 1st possessions at stoppage and 13th for ground ball gets

And it wasn't one of his good years. Clarry in the ball park of his best would be our second best player - very comfortably.

Yeah, supremely good contested midfielder when he’s on. You don’t fluke consecutive AFLCA MVPs.

There were enough glimpses of that player in 2025 for me to think it’s worth it

Is it also not conceivable that they’ll struggle to pay the salary cap floor of 95% if they don’t pay part of his salary? They’re clearing conservatively $2.5-3m between Petracca*, Oliver, McVee and Spargo whilst bringing nothing of value in. The cap is circa $18m (I think) in 2026 which means you can underspend by $900k. They’ll be adjusting a number of contracts to bring money forward, but the less they have to do the better.

*they won’t contribute to Petracca because they can get full tote odds without paying. With Oliver they’d be thinking they need to chip something in to get value back.

His best is three years ago.

I’m tipping this thread will turn pretty sharply when people see what Melbourne are willing to deal on Oliver.

All in on Oliver.

Steele I'm a big NO.

30 in December and plays like a 35 year old unfortunately he is washed.

Oliver spent 78% TOG.
He averaged only 72% at the CBA and 2 CCs per game. Top 40 the league. Other players are generally higher with TOG.

He also averaged 5.5 tackles per game. Top #25 in the league. 13/22 games he had 25+ disposals too.
His season was decent when you consider Melbourne were not good, he was used as a tagger and was sometimes not even played as a midfielder.

Allan could be a midfield bull.
He has the rig, just needs the attitude and work ethic.
Making Allen the reason not to recruit Oliver is forcing a round peg in a square hole.
He has elite pace which he should exploit - it would be wasted as an inside mid.
Oliver is an elite inside mid, that would allow Allen to be use his strengths in a more suitable position.

It’s a win/win.

That’s a break out year.
come on jmac who was his opposition he played 16 out of 25, who was close to that of the other young players

Edit... Jen said he played 13

Agreed I think their price will start steep and it’ll be on the manager to bring them back to earth.
