So the rot goes back to Denis?
You jest but yes.

Think there was a point we let Buttifant walk, he had the players in great nick in the early to mid 90s.

And anyone on here for more than 5 minutes knows I trace all our ill fortune back to the Colbert trade.

In a parallel world we kept Mooney, drafted Giansuracusa and Enright, use the 1st rounder we got for Welsh on Chapman, Stevens never went to ICU, Carey kept out of Archer's bathroom and McCartney decided to holiday in the Grampians in 2002.

Oh and we won another 3 flags by 2010.

Mate you know we’d of drafted all the deadwood from that draft but that last preseason game the duck played really showed we were in the picture.

LOL in my alt universe, we end doing a freo/hawks type trade after '99 and end up with Pav and J.Corey, getting rid of McCarney and Watt.

Carey doesn't do he's thing and we're running around with Carey, Moondog and Pav as our key position players for the next decade.

Edit: simple alt universe where they let us merge with Fitzroy.

Seeing as we seem to have a record of going after A grade players and then getting knocked back by them l think that we should continue with this senario...We have paid huge amounts on contracts for LDU and Zuurhar only to see what that has achieved, atm its been a waste of money. So on saying that, its time for another knock back. Time to get Butters. His coach is finishing up and he only has 1 year left on his contract so it would be a great time to talk to him. Give him whatever he wants. Make him a $2m man per season and rile up the Poort Supporters. :D

I was only half joking. I know your take on Colbert. Probably a good one tho its a long time ago now and my memory is a bit cooked.

WE were certainly a very fit side in the early/mid 90s. I knew a guy on the fitness team and he was a very fit athlete and great player (at school level) in his own right.

Was reading this article which stated all our trades since 1988. Very interesting imo.

Of course every team makes hits and mistakes, so I'm not having a go at us at all as all teams passed on him at least once, but I didn't realise this trade result and it shows how list management is so important (especially for us in 2025 and beyond to get some late gems).

We traded pick 58 for Will Sierakowski.

Pick 58 was used by Fremantle for.....

......Lachie Neale.

Ouch!!!!

I'd be happy to have taken the chance.

We wank on about tanking for Reid. What's to say we'd have fixed his attitude?
Correct. We'd be trying to sell him for an early 3rd in October, only to see him AA in 2027 for the Pies.

Of all the teams, I have no hate whatsoever for the big birds, they're a strong club and can likely deal with mental truant, he is.

Yep. Had there been a '94 Prelim 5th Quarter. You just knew we'd have rolled them over, big time.

FFS yous blokes know how to take the ****ing Jam out of my Tuesday Arvo's with nothing to do.

I'm not one that believes attitude is our issue.
Lack of skill is our problem. Lack of speed on the ball. Lack of marking targets from our talls is a huge concern.
Waite & Daw ( for that one year) made our life some much easier. Who we got now that can clunk it regularly.
A one paced midfield of Parker, Simpkin, Sheezel & Powell is asking for trouble. LDU is quick enough but only runs one way.

The 'experts' were saying the following won't be in any North side pushing for finals. Corr, Logue, McDonald and Dinkers-Daniel.
That's four of our back six, well most weeks anyway.

I hope we see a midfield mix of FOS, McKercher, Wardlaw LDU, Simpkin at some stage in the future. Sheezel to HB/HF.
W Dawson CHF ( 2 years away at least) Whitlock CHB ( 2 years away).

Hardeman Comben ???
Goater Whitlock Sheezel
??? Wardlaw McKercher
Zurhaar Dawson Duursma
Curtis Larkey Simpkin
Xerri, LDU, FOS

Inter, Konstanty, ???, ??? ???

2027 for that side, which isn't flash. Good news only one player from another club. All the scraps gone.
We haven't drafted enough of those stringy athletic types like say a Weddle, Hinge or Worrell across the ground and if they can use the ball like a Worrell/Hinge/Scrimshaw can then that would be unreal, particuarly down back.
We lack at least one elite speed player at either end to be able to close space quickly.
And obviously a key forward and small fwd (with elite speed) needed urgently.
Not sure we can solve all our problems all at once, but what they prioritise will be interesting to see.

To be perfectly honest i think the correct call would have been to trade pick #2 ( FOS ) I know you all love him
But the offer from Richmond to North was #2 for #18 + #20 which looks terrible when you look at the numbers but it would have been Harry Armstrong & Luke Trainor and North could have used this years 1st rounder on CDT or Ludowyke
Both Trainor & Armstrong were touted top 10 talents during the year.
Laylaw looks good. Nice pick.

"He would have been at spud at NMFC and would have requested a trade to a big club"

Thats not what happened on draft night. The football department felt they had the list and didn’t need that pick any longer, it was a fire sale. You dont trade your future first if you think its going to be pick 1 or 2. They honestly felt they were shooting up the ldder. You can clearly identify this with all the bullshit spin of “no more excuses” “enough talking” rhetoric in pre season.

They ****ed up and its not because of Daniel.
I don't think they thought that next years top 6 pick is surplus to needs or we'd rise massively up the ladder.
They likely assessed they were getting FOS at 2, that rounds out the midfield, we don't need anymore mids, half of the top 10 are going to be tied to academy and NGA clubs (and most of the top 25 from what I've seen early doors), and the only tall rated in the top 5 is Duff-Man, who is pretty similar type to Goad.

If we kept the pick, theoretically we could have traded it for a player (unlikely they pick us currently), but imo we'd either be taking the tall a bit early or trying to trade back in the order.
I don't think trading back in the order is all that easy just looking at what teams hold currently, because teams with the later R1 and/or early R2 picks have academy/NGA kids they have to pay for.
Potentially we could have extracted a top 12 pick and a later F1 or early F2. Just not sure too many teams will be as keen to get into the 1st round like they were last draft, because the available talent isn't looking as good as last years crop.

Looks like Maynard going to re-sign with Collingwood which is personally a huge relief.

Out of interest is this from the Herald Sun this morning, they were a bit tricky as they had him in the photo of a Magpies star re-signing but it was Bobby Hill. Fooled me into clicking in at least.
