I think its the perfect time to bring in a free agent as we would have already banked and front ended existing contracts to the max and will start losing the banked cash in the cap.

Use it or lose it
I'd be more inclined to keep on banking rather than using it for the sake of using it. Use when it is of greater benefit to the team as a whole and for me that is when we're in our window and a high end free agent is going to possibly make the difference between making finals and winning finals/flags.

For now bring in those Houli Grigg Lambert types that helped us previously go from a bottom dweller to a finals side, then when we get in the finals and find that we're a little bit short of the top rung, then go and get that top end talent that pushes us over the top.

It's the same plan that worked previously and I see no reason to change from it when we know that it works.

You can only bank 5% a year for Max 2 years other wise you lose that

Didn't they change it to 3 years & 10% or was that just put as an option and never brought in?
Never seen 3 years at 10%

I did post that a while ago but in the context at the changes they should do along with increasing list spots
still 5% and 2 years i believe unless somebody can find something thats different.

Who is the research guru here ?

I seem to remember morro mentioned you have minions that do that work for you
Only the one minion being RT

I have a heavy hitter in toenail63 which I bring out for special occasions

The whole crux of our list building strategy will be centred around where our list managers see our current build. They've already put together a dynasty team and we can all see the similarities in the player types that have been targeted in constructing a new dynastic team.

I'm absolutely positive that there were lessons learnt in the previous build, not the least of which was the impact that the expansion teams had on our ability to access top end talent via the draft in 2010 with GCS and 2011 with GWS. But it wasn't just the draft that their concessions were felt, there were also 13 OOC players taken in those 2 years as well.

We had a pretty solid list going into 2013 and finished 5th with 15 wins, 2014 was 8th with 12 wins, 2015 was again 5th with 15 wins, unfortunately bundled out in each of the 3 elimination finals. 15 wins would have seen us as top 4 in 5 of the next 10 seasons, 16 wins would have been top 4 in all of those 10 seasons.

Those 'almost' seasons highlighted our shortcomings both in experience and talent. Over the seasons 2013 -2016 we added Butler, Lambert, Short, Castagna, Soldo, Townsend, Rioli and Broad via the draft and Nank, Prestia and Caddy via trades to what would be the 2017 premiership side.

The question begs, what would our list managers do differently this time around and what lessons were learnt last time? IMO, if they had access to top end draft picks, both in quality and quantity as well as enough capital and cash to access trades then they could easily see the path to a fast-tracked list build. This is exactly what is happening, they've identified what's needed from past experience and have been aiming to get the team to a similar position to where we found ourselves in 2012, this time the plan is not to have 4 years wasted (2013-2016) because we've already identified the structure needed and have drafted with that in mind.

#tigs2010 said a couple of days ago that he sees us at that 2012 timeline in our premiership window, although most would agree that what he says is not necessarily a tick of approval, nudge nudge, ;) ;), say no more. I see us as being in a similar position going into 2026, but with all the cogs that we added in 2013-2016 being already in place. Like 2016 we'll be finishing in the bottom 6 next year, our list builders have already said that they want to have a look at the squad and then look at filling the identified holes and shortcomings via the player market.

The blokes in charge have had the experience of negotiating a list build around the concessions given to an expansion team and know that it delays the completion of that build, they'll work around it, but the obvious course has already been taken. We've built a substantial war chest of cash and access to draft capital that is primed to take advantage of the player market before it's pillaged by Tassie

According to the AFL you can bank for 2 years and it must be used by the 3rd year.

But it doesn't say the 2 years can't be a rolling 2 years. If for example we started banking a little bit last year after Martin Bolton Rioli Grimes Baker Graham and the rest of the delisted departed, we'd need to use that banked money in 2027 or we lose it. But this year with a few more names off the books and more youth than experience running around we bank 5% of the cap, that is $907,418 we bank, then in 2027 when Lynch Prestia Broad & possible Vlastuin are off the books we bank another 5%, that's another $914,562 banked.

Heading into the 2027 off season we'd have $1,821,980 plus another 5% of the 2028 cap if we're still only paying 95% of the cap. That would put us up around $3m in cap space to use to attract free agents/trade targets and would be a much better way to use it than blowing our wad in 2026 for a free agent that may not make that much of a difference especially if we do lose all of Lynch Prestia Broad & Vlastuin to retirement.

I Had a good look at this a couple of months ago and came to the conclusion that we would need to extend players and front load players like Fawcett , McAuliffe , Gibcus , Brown etc to even meet the cap floor in 2026 and with the retirements of
Broad , Prestia in 2027 we will have a surplus of nearly $6,000,000 and thats why we really need to try and get a free agent with a massively front loaded contract.

I'd be inclined to pay a few of our younger players while we can and get them locked away before focusing on a big name free agent/trade signing. WE have put together a good young group and I'd like to keep as many of them together as possible. As mentioned earlier on get a few solid experienced role players in over the next 12-24 months to strengthen areas we feel need it and then go all in with free agency/big name trade when we get into our window.

Yes, but you had a good look at it using made up numbers in your head, which at the end of the day means very little.
I'm pretty sure Blair knows what he's doing

One thing that has struck me with Yze is that he doesn't seem the type to look for a shortcut when it comes to building the list, so I just can't see us shoving our chips all in at the trade/free agency table looking for a quick fix. Instead I can see a slow and steady approach until such time as we feel that our window is opening and it's time to strike. That doesn't mean we won't dip our toes into the trade pool, but it's going to be splashing about at the shallow end of the pool rather than climbing the 10m board and cannon balling into the deep end.

Appreciate the in depth look you've obviously taken regarding this and it certainly much more entertaining to read than the rubbish that some seem to think is insightful opinion

Unless you have a better set of numbers we can go off ?
But they were mainly reported numbers which is all we can go from

maybe we could ask Blair for the correct numbers ?
what you think

Banking 5% of the cap = $907,418 surplus, a far cry from $6m
