2026 Attendances

You cannot watch a Melbourne or Richmond game on TV which is looking at the side where the supports aren't sitting, and have any acceptable basis for what the crowd actually is.

To be fair I would have thought the Tigers would be the most represented on the broadcast side given their affinity for the Punt Road End.

Not when they close level 4 for their games against interstate sides other than the Olympic. The same applies to last year.

Some quite interesting fixturing coming up for the NSW market. No games in NSW over the easter long weekend. Instead, GWS have the bye with Sydney playing in Perth.

With a little imagination the AFL could have placed the SCG Sydney derby that is scheduled for a couple of weeks later after the easter weekend and given the NRL a bit competition, who are trying to make the easter weekend an event.

Oh, and now GWS aren't playing at Engie again till the 9th May due to the perpetual availability problems.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but GIANTS should not play any matches at Engie until May each season. Play their 8 home matches over the final 16 rounds of the year on each second Saturday @ 4:35pm. Easiest way to build momentum with trying to grow the game. Should start the season @ Canberra. Having a six week break away from their home ground each season is quite ridiculous.

Tried to factcheck through AI, but haven’t done it myself.

If so the Richmond crowd yesterday is the current highest last home crowd out of all vic clubs.

Please correct me if wrong.

  • Collingwood ~24,397
  • Carlton ~24,120

As I responded to said poster on Twitter, it’s problematic comparing these figures given Richmond played the Suns at the MCG whilst many of the others played them at Marvel..

Yes, we know Collingwood aren’t drawing only 24k against the Suns at the MCG. And last time the Tigers played the Suns at Marvel it drew 18k I think.

Yes, Richmond and Collingwood disdain for Marvel is more pronounced than the likes of Carlton and Essendon but these latter two clubs would highly likely draw a bigger crowd if at the MCG, certainly if in a great slot on a sunny day. Also, first home game, perfect slot, sunny day yesterday etc.

Hawks playing them in Tassie. Cats locked in too.

It’s all interesting but hardly a relevant set of numbers to draw conclusions out of.

I noted in the X post that yesterdays crowd was absolutely fine btw.

As GC are probably going to ne a contender for the foreseeable future, Collingwood might think about moving their previous Marvel games against them to the MCG. If they maintain some semblance of form as well, they would probably get 40 to 50k against them, certainly more than they would get at Marvel.

This doesn't make much sense?

Unless it's the last game against the Suns and features home games interstate (ala Launceston)

Hawthorn always choosing to play GC in Launceston skews the result for them.

The last time Hawthorn played the Suns in Melbourne they drew 31,331 (Roughead’s last game, a Sunday night at Marvel).

As an aside, 2016-2022 was an absolute dumpster fire for Hawthorn from a list management point of view.

Port/Bombers 36,049 at AO.
I think it’s fair to stipulate that there will be a “full stop” on bombers crowds in 2026.

Anzac Day too will probably be sub par this season based on a shambolic start from this Essendon outfit.

Austadiums have the GWS / StK crowd as 9,149.

That would make the total for the 7 games of Round 2 as 264,615.

Not too shabby without Collingwood or Carlton playing. Standouts were the terrific Adelaide and WC crowds, but most were pretty good.

The David King suggestion from a month ago on SEN where he would rather the season start a couple of weeks later and finish on the second Saturday of October would make sense. A Thursday 18th March 2027 start time instead.
I thought our contract with the MCG ends on the 1st Saturday in October and then the Cricket takes over?

Still early days (and we’ve been burnt by fully ticketed games already) but Hawthorn v Geelong is selling a lot faster than past years.

Tickets are already being sold halfway up the back of the Ponsford Stand which two weeks out from match day is a lot quicker than Carl v Rich and Ess v Haw (and Geel v Haw last year).

IMG_9441.webp

Last year drew 88,746, I’m not sure this will draw that but it could draw in the mid 80,000’s.
