2026 Attendances

Hey manicmagpie , can you see if you can find me Essendon’s lowest home MCG attendances post 1992 & excluding the suspensions year 2016?

I suspect with Sundays weather forecast, steady rain all day, will likely set a new low mark for the Club.

I said last year after Giants Thursday night game late in the year just notched 20,000 that Essendon isn’t a sub 20,000 at home team. I reckon if the weather forecast holds, I will be proven wrong!

You don't need to exclude 2016 - all the awful crowds from that year were at Docklands.

All MCG home games for Essendon from 1993 onwards to be less than 35k:

29,221 at the Gabba tonight for Brisbane v Geelong.
Very solid outing all things considered. A wet Thursday night in the South East with 24k across the river for the Women’s SOO. Members area was unusually sparse also, the floor at the moment for Lions games

SCG is heaving. Sneaky chance at 45k?

Genuinely wonder what the ceilings would be for the Lions and Swans if they both had Optus style stadiums. I’d imagine for local derbies and big marquee matchups 50k would be doable

In 2032 the Lions will have 63k. So we will find out soon enough. Doubt they will fill that often. The Swans have show with the Homebush games 20 years that they can push well above the SCG capacity.

11,974 for Gold Coast at Darwin. Their 3rd best attendance there (out of 12 played).

You have to remember that the 63k capacity is not being built for the Lions, it is being built for the Olympics.

Probably could have if the weather was better.
I'd be shocked if it were because of the weather because the weather seemed good beforehand. There was a very small localised shower that popped up over Moore Park / SCG during the game but the weather was mostly fine all day and before the game.

The attendance doesn't appear all that different to previous attendances, except bar the derby, the clear outlier and highest attended this season (which arguably had much worse weather but again, during the game).

Melbourne v Hawthorn this Saturday twilight will be a cracker. I think we should expect a crowd in the high 50’s for that one.

Dees v Hawks have only drawn one home and away game over 60,000 (the merger game). I think today might be an outside shot of adding to that.

Last year’s fixtures drew 50,000 and 54,000, throw in better form for both teams, cheaper tickets and it should draw very well. There are a lot less walk ups than past games between the teams too.

Some of the most searched for terms are about local weather. If people see there is a bit of rain on the radar even if it is brief, it will effect decisions to go to the footy or not. I suspect that happened for this game.

I think you overestimate how many people are clued onto this sort of stuff. For the average punter, they will look out the window to make their decision. It sounds as though the weather was very localised so can’t see it impacting the attendance by 5k.
