Apparently current umpires don't want to go full time cause they can keep their full time jobs and earn moreRecently retired Claremont champion Jye Bolton on radio this morning made an interesting point re: umpiring.
He noted that ex-players don’t go into umpiring. Why? Because they can’t bring themselves to come off an AFL players salary & into an umpiring pay scale.
Many take on big mortgages in their playing days & then need keep chasing money, even though many would love to stay involved in the game.
Jye is of a view that the AFL could spend a bit more on umps & would then attract ex-players who have a great feel for the game.
Made sense.
As an aside, Jye is incredibly astute and well spoken. He’d make a great addition to the national media.
Side note though: call me poor but if I was earning more in per season than a 2 bedroom apartment in the Melbourne suburbs, I wouldn't want a mortgage by the time my playing days were finished
