NTY.During the closing stages of last year’s trade period the Demons launched what one industry figure described as a “late throw at the stumps” for Merrett, exploring whether a deal could be pulled together if talks with Hawthorn stalled.
At the time, then Melbourne chief executive Paul Guerra (an Essendon supporter and admirer of Merrett’s), believed the Demons were a chance of entering the trade scenario late in the piece, with Christian Petracca’s name raised to potentially head the other way. Petracca ultimately found a new home at the Gold Coast.
Melbourne’s interest is likely to intensify given their revival under new coach Steven King.
The Demons possess the financial flexibility to mount a major play for elite talent.
The combination of premiership potential and significant salary cap space shapes as an attractive proposition for Merrett if he decides his future lies away from Essendon.

If nothing else it might give us a chance of a Gather Round victory against the Dons.During the closing stages of last year’s trade period the Demons launched what one industry figure described as a “late throw at the stumps” for Merrett, exploring whether a deal could be pulled together if talks with Hawthorn stalled.

'At least one first round pick' who the **** is giving up more than one first rounder for a 31yo who has never played in a winning final and hasn't been AA since 2023?Can we all agree that it is time to trade Merrett at the end of this season? He has served us well over the journey and still has plenty of good footy left but we need to hit this draft hard prior to Tasmania taking over. I was all for standing strong last year against a paltry trade offer from the Whoreks but we need to make the right move for the club this year and that means trading Zachary when he still has some value. At least one first round pick is non-negotiable btw.

sKing collection former captains like Thanos collecting stones.Next captain?
Great player but only worth it if we think we're a real hot flag chance in 2027/28.He’d be great but only if the Dons don’t ask the world (which I’m sure they will).
There is truly something pathologically wrong with that club. I wonder to what extent the simultaneous extremity of success and underachievement of 1999-2001 completely nuked the culture.Great player but only worth it if we think we're a real hot flag chance in 2027/28.

Unfortunate for Essendon that Tassie didn't come in last year, they're probably the only club that would have been insane enough to meet their needs if he'd been willing to go there.
**** that's so funny. Talk about gigantic overs, and they turned it down.
I'd rather Humphrey due to the age, but Merrett is such a good 'type' for us as well. Would pretty much want Humphrey to be playing like him.Would you rather Merrett or Humphrey?
It was interesting hearing that Hawthorn think they can land them both. Not sure how they would manage that, especially after last year.I'd rather Humphrey due to the age, but Merrett is such a good 'type' for us as well. Would pretty much want Humphrey to be playing like him.
Could be just spin from them to keep the discussions with both open?It was interesting hearing that Hawthorn think they can land them both. Not sure how they would manage that, especially after last year.
Would rather Max Gruzewski instead.
Would you rather Merrett or Humphrey?
Yeah he seems spiritually toxic. Would rather pass.Merrett looks just like Trac last year and is phoning it in until he can get another trade, but Tracs peak is well above Merrett.
Not what we would want IMO. Would be more the Jeffo/Kentfield level rather than the automatic number 1 KPF.Is this kid any good?
