Geelong, Hawthorn, Brisbane, Sydney and even Adelaide have added good players consistantly over the last 10-15 years.
Collingwood trades in the last 10-15 years:

2013 - Taylor Adams
2014 - Jack Crisp
2015 - Adam Treloar, Jeremy Howe
2017 - WHE
2021 - Pat Lipinski
2022 - Bobby Hill
2023 - Lachie Schultz
2024 - Dan Houston

Note: I’ve deliberately left out several names who have been more than handy and stuck to the most successful or highest profile trades. Lipinski was borderline but even without him we’re looking at 8 trades in the past 13 years which means we’re averaging more than one very good to great player every second year. Hell I’ve probably missed one or two that deserve to be listed.

If you think that any of those teams you’ve listed have objectively done significantly better than us at the trade table in the same period you’re taking the piss.

Not sure if you left him out on purpose because of his lack of longevity, though Mitchell deserves a mention.

We've always done well for the most part to trade in a need for the list. People can question the need for Houston all they want though so far this season it's looking like a great acquisition.

Geelong, Hawthorn, Brisbane, Sydney and even Adelaide have added good players consistantly over the last 10-15 years.

As an example, next year, 3 of Adelaide's top 4 players (Rankine, Dawson, and potentially Bailey) could be players they have acquired via trad from other clubs in the last 3-4 years.

We missed out on Lynch and Cameron, despite having the worst key forwards in the league as an example.

The best clubs consistantly attract the best players (and usually at a cheaper price than the poorer-run clubs do).

I think we have been good at attracting good B+/A- level players (Treloar, Houston, Schultz), but I think a lot of holes in our team have been masked by the fact that older gunds (pendlebury, sidebottom, howe) have player to a higher level for longer than we anticipated.

Bigger stars also cost more (picks or $) and there is a risk of winner's curse.

No flags for the Buddy move, or the Judd trade.

No flags for Adelaide yet.

Danger + Cameron trades netted the same flags so far as Hill + Frampton.

It would be great to have a star fall from the sky for a bargain but never go full St kilda.
Better to win flags than trade week.

Not to mention a certain Copeland Trophy winner who massively cost us moving back from 56 to 62 in the draft!

Both Houston and Schultz trades came this way.
Shultz was a long term project that was blown out of the water by his want to come to Victoria one year earlier than expected. The changes were Shultz had personal reasons. The club expected Shultz to be a free agent one year later. Lynch landed at Richmond with Balme. Was it true the initial work by Balme was done at the pies?

The way the system is structured UFA’s are rarely as desirable as RFA’s so I don’t share your opinion.
Fair enough

I don’t like the idea being on the hook for picks

If RFAs are able to get to us without matching / forcing trade, brilliant

If the RFA that were reported to be interested in match as is the word, IMO I don’t think we can mortgage our future to secure them

* I’m ok if we trade for young guns who won’t reach RFA for a number of years

Essendon winning every trade week for 20 years and still not improving

I did leave him out on purpose, purely because he was well past his prime when we got him.

I dont even see how journos would know an order of his preferred clubs down to 4th
Champion Data mate. You have to pay for the full knuckle head sucker package to get it.

Collingwood 13th in the league for overall feelers accepted, and our Successful Sniffing Around % is 5 points below the median. Hoynie said so.

Which best 23 player(s) would we consider trading to Port if it had to be part of a deal for Butters?
I'd give up Beau as much as we love him.
But it's still going to cost an additional 3 1st rounders on-top of a best 23.
We can't afford that.
