Now that I have calmed down a few days after the game, I am abit more positive.

If you compare us to this time 12 months ago, we were on top of the ladder, but we had no depth, and had a lot of question marks on players outside of the best 23. Most of our "depth" were solid older players like Hoskin-Elliott, Cox, Mitchell and Markov ect, but in terms of younger depth, it was pretty much Ned Long.

After carefully looking at their games, I am very confident Steele (very clean and strong aerobic running), Anderson (unique aggressiveness/attack on ball, but needs more preseasons to play >60% game time) and Steene will be in the best 23 for the foreseeable future.

On top of that, I am very confident we will add to this list over the next 12-24 months, with all of West (potential to be a very good afl player, does everything well), Hayes, Harrison, Howes all looking likely to be AFL level players, and further down the track Swadling/Saxena looking likely, although early.

Based on this, my view is that, we have very good depth (and ability to develop 15 to 23 on list players), but a lack of top liners.

Outside of full back (and maybe full forward), astute/money-ball style cheap pick ups are good, but will have less effectiveness (diminishing returns you could say) in moving the needle closer to a flag because we would be improving our depth, but not the lack of class at the top end.

For example, adding a player like Jordan Butts/Charlie Ballard clearly fills a hole in the team and brings us closer to a flag because we clearly have a need for another lockdown defender with Moore's erratic performances over the last 18 months and Howes body getting closer to the end (and that he played better as an interceptor anyway).

However, getting a player like Alex Davies (who I like) or George Stevens, while they could get games, are unlikely to improve us materially, as they would be competing with someone like Anderson.

So in summary, we need to find a way add top liners to the team in that 2 to 10 range to try and eventually replace players like Pendlebury, Sidebottom ect.

The 3 areas we are in most dire need as:
1. Complete Mid (Butters, Rowell, Merrett, instantly fill this role or you could bet on an out of form/lesser proven player like Humphrey/Soligo and hope they can become this player)
2. Key Forward (King is the obvious choice, and Jed Walter a good backup).
3. Outside Power Runner (Not a top liner yet, but think Darcy Wilson is the obvious guy to target here).

Obviously, much easier said then done, but if we can fill 3 of these holes in the team over the next 2 offseasons, then I think we are well placed (with our improved ability to develop players 15 to 23) to be competative over the next 5 years.

After the weekend I have decided that Butters is a must. To that end I sent the following texts to Zak in fervent anticipation of his decision to join the pies.

"Hi Zak it's me, Ludo. Now, don't be like that Zak, don't look frightened. I love you Zak. I have told you that 1,947 times at last count. That strippergram to your parents house counts as two by the way.

Now Zak, I love how you are looking today. You always look so amazing in the shower. That's right Zak, wave for me. I love the new shampoo you are using. I left something special in the bottle for you. Now Zak, let's get serious You know that belly button lint sculpture I made of you? The one I sent you the pic of?

Zak, I have a confession. I kind of summoned dark forces from the depths of hell. No, not Carlton. I'm not sick or something. But they did help me out on something. You see, your hairbrush had some of your soft silken locks in it. Definitely good you changed your shampoo Zak, it was not helping your incipient baldness. And with those hairs incorporated into your sculpture, I have powers Zak. Ones I hope never ever to have to use.

But Zak, if you don't join us, I will have to do the unthinkable. Burn your sculpture. And by the power of the dark ones that means I will burn you Zak. Instead of you burning opponents, you will be burning like Vossy's credibility but more violently and with less dumb platitudes. You will burn brightly Zak, like you always do. Not even the special fluid I put in your shampoo can soothe that hurt.

Don't do that Zak. Don't be like Josh Schache, who spurned my love. And look what happened to him Zak.

You are going to join us Zak, I know it my lovely. So just relax, let it happen, and avoid all this painful stuff. I will make a new belly button lint sculpture of you without the hair, one just for you. All I need is access to your belly button and a 8 x 11 glossy pic of your smiling face Zak. That will take care of the special fluids....

Zak? Zak? You seem to be curled up in a ball Zak. Is that some new exercise? I like it. I might need to do a special belly button lint sculpture of you in that pose."

Similarly to others, I think this year has and will continue to be a useful one for getting a read on some of our younger players.

Steene looks solid. Another preseason to sharpen his tank a bit and get him able to play more TOG would be great, especially with his aerial ability up forward.

Anderson looks really good. Similarly to Steene, needs better endurance, but his impact in limited TOG is really promising.

Steele isn’t quite as young, but should be a handy outside player for a long time. Great runner and neat skills.

Hayes looks more comfortable at the level. His ground ball game impresses me, and I really like how his head is on a swivel when he gets the footy, often in dangerous spots on the ground.

Then there are those like West and Swadling, who are killing it at the VFL level and look poised to make a claim on a senior spot any time soon. Even Saxena has impressed early on. If we can pick up a Steele-like player in the MSD we’ll be doing well.

The issue is that top end of talent. Sidebottom, to me, looks to be firmly at the end of his career. One of the greats of our club, but he can’t be relied upon as he used to be - let alone to win matches. Howe and Moore are both off their best and getting frustrating and poorly timed injuries too. Pendlebury is the exception in that he’s probably playing better than he has in years, inexplicably.

Inject a good young pick into the list (Patterson?) and some out of contract guns (Neale, Wilson & King would be nice!) and I think we’re rolling.

Completely agree. Well said.

As much as we have gone top up in previous years. The right calls were made late last year on three vets. Itll happen again this year also

We have been competitive with "top teams" outside of cats and lions losses.

I like the clubs direction its going. Despite the media noise and now impacting some posters here to believe the sky is falling.

No one had steene and anderson in the team at start of the year

I know how to get Butters and King for basically nothing at the end of the year.

It is a long shot but if they both commit armed robbery and are sent to prison for the next 6 months and no other team wants them and they choose us.

Fingers crossed.

And we can blame Max if there are witnesses and we can only afford 1 balaclava. If they rob a footy record kid at the MCG I reckon 6 months would be a fair punishment

This feels harsh. The Sidebottom I’m watching week to week has copped three rough collisions to start the year and is currently a victim of his own willingness to be team first in a team with a weak bottom 8. Having him roll back to protect the defense with IQ further up the field on Dempsey, no Perryman and Parker and Ryan watching from home was poor coaching which led to a poor outcome once Moore went down. I’d allow him to settle back into one role again before writing his obituary because if we can afford to carry Long as a nothing forward we sure as shit can carry the 10x more creative Sidebottom. I mean my god how were we expecting to kick a score with a forward line of battlers including Buller, Long, AA and Shoota. They’re all workhorses which won’t cut it against a team like Geelong unless we can keep them <70 which was never happening with so many short down back.

Not for me. I think it’s the complete opposite.

None of our forwards have the ability to get any space on our opponents which means our mids end up bombing to the contest. Then that mindset gets entrenched in the rest of the team.

That’s not to say we don’t need more midfield talent. We desperately need that too.
Not sure about your point on our fwds- I think Buller is showing he definitely can find space. Space is about Footy IQ and structure, not necessarily pace - as Gunston proves.
That said West being fast off the mark will have an added tool in his kit.

Have to disagree about Oscar, a few of us thought he'd be in the team if given a chance.

The brutal reality is if your side is realistically not good enough to play off in a preliminary final and give themselves an opportunity to play in a GF, you are probably better served being at the opposite end of the ladder for a few years, have access to the best junior talent and/or the capital for high end trade.

The worst place to be is the mid table of death and that's what we're currently facing this season and potentially for many seasons to come if we don't act.

While we were always getting priority access to Nick, if he didn't exist we would have retained our 2021 1st round selection and that would have delivered an unexpected pick 2. That could have gained us Callaghan or a Rachele.

While neither are as good as Nick they would have still proven to be a handy acquisition for McRae in the subsequent years and been worth that one season of pain. We might still have won the 2023 Premiership.

So my question is this?

If forced to choose between playing in and potentially losing a wildcard "final" or tumbling down the ladder in 2026 due to changing selection priorities what would you prefer?

Currently we're 6pts ahead of 5th last Port Adelaide and I find it hard to argue that our list wouldn't be better served in the medium term by gaining an unexpected top 5 pick (and now bonus start of 2nd round selection after inevitable bid) this off season and prior to the entrance of Tasmania.

Throw in a F/A or two that costs salary cap space only and it's the type of list refresh that could provide a bounce in 2027 and help strengthen the list transition in coming seasons.

We need access to more talent and we'll need it bloody soon.
Your assumption is the draft is the answer - it’s a lottery given so many Top 10 picks have failed.
Trading picks for young player that are known quantities is far safer IMO.

It certainly could be, I just worry that he can’t bounce back from those hits like he used to and no longer has time and space.

Yeah fair point.

Outside the colingwood faithful. When Cox was gone it was plastered as wheres our ruck back up coming from.

Ill admit i didnt think he would have been this influential

Sign Toby Greene, Lachie Neale, Jesse Hogan and Jordan Butts as UFA draft the best available mid with our first pick

One example, shouldn't have traded for Shooter and that pick 14 ended up Jonty Faull who looks like a poor man's Buller. Then there's the Bombers haul of Cox, Perkins and Z.Reid, enough said.

Not to mention Richmond who went all in on kids and a lot of them can’t even get on the park.

I dont and i doubt majority of pies fans do. I only go off you guys on here. I knew he was talked about but didnt expect him to be that good.
You should give it a try one day when you have a few hours to spare, it's great to see how our young ones are coming on.
