After all the semantics on population growth and pointing to different projections, the fact is that both Canberra and Perth will be major growth areas (alongside SEQ).
Population growth is a pro for both, compared to the NT and Tasmania, where it would be a con.
I mean on that basis, Melbourne should be adding teams in the future. No new team since 1925 when the population was 887,000. Up a lazy 507%.

Population & growth isn’t everything otherwise GWS & GC would be a raging successes with sellouts every fortnight. After all the semantics on population growth and pointing to different projections, the fact is that both Canberra and Perth will be major growth areas (alongside SEQ).

There are also levels, Canberra gets a tick but it will be behind WA in that metric.
QLD3 is crazy talk in my opinion, especially when they are getting a stadium twice the size soon.
You were going on about the potential for attendances to be below a breakeven crowd and this being a "cost",
you'd spend the hundreds of millions of dollars that is required to expand the capacity by just 10,000?
so 220,000 across 22 games, or less than the amount of people that will simply show up for the 4 new derby games
What's the point of reading the rest of the post after this
There are 2 key elements to attract more from TV rights. More viewers from those interested and to grow overseas. Similar to how the US have grown basketball and gridiron to such an extent (especially in young demographics)there will be a sold out MCG game next year.
To do that in an AFL context you need an iconic team that resonates overseas and tribal passion.
NT/Northern Australia based out of Darwin fits the bill. Pick the eyes out of the local takent as well as the draft and the team will have a unique Australian identity with unlimited potential both here and overseas.
That I'd something Canberra and Perth 3 just don't have
So have Canberra games. In one it snowed.Games in northern Australia have also been, disproportionately, weather-affected, hard-to-watch games.
That's not going to be good for TV rights.

Don't think northern Australia has been in any way disproportionately affected.

If we are talking afl expansion in overseas markets.
AFL has 2 things going.
1 MCG. And to a lesser degree the sports precinct. World class. No other sport in the world gets 100000 to a world class stadium. None.
2. Unique game and unique landmarks.
Sydney Perth (to a lesser extent) And the top end. Desert crocodiles the barrier reef the outback etc. Build and export the national game off that.
Most overseas people have never heard of Canberra. That's a dead end for expansion.
Granted shouldn't disqualify it in of itself but it also lacks the fundamental passion and footballing nous the top end brings.
The unique climate would be an advantage.
Every bit a home ground advantage of Geelong or Eagles and freo x 10
As for not being able to attract players please. I've known people who've moved to China even a shit hole like Saudi Arabia for more $$ and opportunities. A budding afl.star would move in a heart beat

The prime minister can take visiting diplomats to games etc.
Listed below are 10 sports stadiums from around the world who have a bigger capacity than the MCG, and so therefore have drawn biggers crowds than the MCGIf we are talking afl expansion in overseas markets.

sports stadiums from around the world who have a bigger capacity than the MCG,
I and others have had poor experiences at the MCG, so it can happen anywhereHaving capacity doesnt necessarily mean draws better Look at Accor Stadium.
8 of those are US College stadiums that host less than matches a year, but they do have high demand.
The top 1 is apparently large, but also a very poor experience (according to indian cricket journos who i spoke to last year)

Says the man who posts regularly on leagueunlimited and has admitted his favourite team is the Brisbane Broncosyes we get it, your a league fan
Neither do we, tell me one club who can get 100,000 attendance for a home game, there's probably a few but they can't due to restrictions. If we are talking afl expansion in overseas markets.
