Senior 22. Hunter Holmes (2025 - )

A good sized midfielder who will beneift greatly from Lappin and Buckley's expertise in the coaching department. Speed, speed and more speed is what Geelong are after and under these new rules in 2026 it will be even more advantageous. Remember Ollie Dempsey spent a year in the VFL, so i expect a development year ahead for Holmes who will be very comfortable from the outset training alongside his brother. It's unfair to start making comparisons with his brother, but 2027 - 2028 could see a really good player emerge.

It could also be that he is more like Zuthrie was as a younger brother - took more than a few years developing…I am ok either way…we can afford him to take his time in the VFL - what is exciting is that he probably has the attributes and we are the best in the business in terms of development

Look at the size of them thighs. Kid will end up Dangerfield-esk physically. And he's years ahead on the poor kicking.
Well that's something.

These kids were all 12 when covid hit; for Victorian kids that meant two years not learning to pass the ball in competitive scenarios.

Anyone who is above average in that respect is a bonus. Even in their "highlights" most of the draftees were substandard field kicks.

I dont really like the pick if im honest. What I do like is athletically he does have a lot of potential and he clearly comes from a good family he will be a good citizen off field.
I dont however think his kicking is anywhere near afl standard and im not sure it can get to afl standard (that said hes raw so maybe with development it will).

I personally would have preferred philipou although no doubt his personality issues compared with Hunter as a good citizen comes into it.
No doubt that the club was more motivated to take him with Max already here.
If you can run fast you can kick 60 meters. That's all you need for an outside mid until skills develop. Run ten, kick 50. Max did that for years.

You can learn foot skills you cannot learn to run.

Another set of brothers 💙💙

How did Geelong pull that off?

Many players cannot learn foot skills though see Kane tenace. For a lot of them it's career terminal.

Wellsy said he told Lee Naylor before night 2 they would take him if he got through to our second pick. Would have been an interesting web cam set up where they would have been cheering each pick which wasn't him haha.

Must have read it wrong
Sorta. Wells said Hunter Holmes has only been in the ‘system’ for a year and had very little experience. Massive upside. The mum has been quoted as saying they’re all notoriously late developers too, including herself.
