Put it this way.. if you are the 21/22 guy.. you wouldn't feel great especially with guys like EKav, NOB, Edwards, Aylett, Coyler etc etc all looking to get a place in the team..

What may work in his favour is that Bomber loves 'big bodied' midfielders... what may work against him is that Bomber also loves players who can play in dual positions (ie must be able to stay on the field for rotations)...

As to the Howlett debate.. Benny was probably our best mid for Rnds 1-6 and then went off the boil and was struggling big time by rnd 18 onwards... there is talk of niggling injury etc etc.. so potentially if he puts in the same effort for longer this year.. he gets a game... if you look at the tape of Rnd 1, Howlett is the main reason we win against the Crows.. and again in Rnd 2 he was dynamite.. So very interesting times ahead..

Even with Howlett possibly ahead i have hime as 21 a n thus best 21. He along eith zacka, melk eill get onball time against weaker sides whete BJ and Watsin are rested with more time forward.

Right.. so we are essentially agreeing that Myers is player 21/22 in the side, which means it is not a stretch to suggest that IF some of the guys in spots 22-28 step up, his position would in the team would be in jeopardy, which is all I was saying from the beginning..

the other factor is the fact that there is a high likelihood that we will get injuries through the year and I would think that Myers is the natural replacement (for serious midfield minutes) if any of Goddard/Watson/Chapman/Stanton go down...

But this presumes no improvement in Myers. I think everyone who would like him in the team are hoping for and expecting him to step up just like those in potential 22-28 spots.

Yep.. I would imagine a spot on the bench of a premiership side is far more appealing than being in the rabble at Melbourne or St Kilda..

You would also think that Myers himself would back himself to earn the minutes at EFC if he is good enough...

I like that various opposition coaches and players really rate our list. It's very easy to become one-eyed as a fan but hearing it from people who have every reason to knock the team gets me excited.

20/21 by me depending on if you rate Howlett or Myers higher.

Everyone has to play well to maintain their position in the side
 
The mistake being made when these threads become about predicting spots in a best 22 is that they seem to assume that the hierarchy is established and that certain players wont improve.

Myers has at least another season, and probably two, of the sort of dramatic improvement that he made during the course of 2013.

He's got the tools to sit behind Watson as a pretty clear second as an inside midfielder at the club (which doesn't have account of the complete situation if he continues to increase mobility and endurance). That he might not be the best fit for a written starting 18 really doesn't mean anything.

Could be so dangerous.......but hoofs around the corner withot looking are getting old. If he straightens up and makes every kick effective, I might take notice.

Good point

Hes next in line for that big bodied inside midfielder behind Watson, Goddard. If one of tthose got injured his time and importance would greatly increase. Thats where his extra time in the midfield can only come that way.

Essendon midfielder David Myers said he always wanted to remain at the club despite speculation about his future during the recent trade period.

The 24-year-old put to rest reports he was seeking more midfield time in December by signing a new two year deal which will see him remain at Bomber until the end of 2016.

Myers said he never considered leaving the club he was drafted to in 2007.

“The club has turned into my family in a lot of ways especially with the other guys who have had to move away from home as well,” he said.

“I obviously never wanted to move, I have been here seven years now and love the place but you keep reading stuff in the papers and there is not really a lot you can do about it.”

“I came back from my holiday and spoke to the club, so we got it sorted and I am just wrapped to be here.”

He said the speculation surrounding player movement was becoming more common across the industry.

“It is a part of the game and with free agency coming in the speculation is probably going to happen more and more so it is something we are all going to have to get used to,” Myers said.

The booming left footer has enjoyed an injury free pre-season barring shoulder surgery at the end of 2013.

He enters his seventh season at the club after a consistent 2013 which saw him play 20 matches.

“It was my first pre-season that I didn’t get injured and my first pre-season I was able to string together in six seasons.”

“It makes a difference heading into the season and to this point I have had another strong pre-season which I hope can carry into the year.”

Myers said the entire playing group was training strongly with majority of his teammates enjoying peak fitness for this time of the pre-season.

Happy with this.

Finally gets the playing time and a few spells through the midfield.

Needs a bit more consistency but that will come.

Look forward for him to really come on this year!!

Both need to focus on their game first and foremost, probably why they have been removed.

Zaharakis has never screamed leader to me. He often screams 'farking amazing footballer though' while Hurley should be more concerned with getting his game together, rather than being on the periphery of the leadership group with no real prospects of being captain any time soon (not that that's any indictment on him at all).

Myers thoroughly deserves this, he's worked ever so hard to not only get his body right, but prove to people internally and externally that he can play in an AFL midfield.
 
It says to me that the are trying to get Myers to take that final step to really put his injury riddled, peripheral team member past behind him. Bloody great to see. He's my breakout man this year, we really know very little about what he is capable of.

EDIT: I think there are two separate .gifs I am thinking of, one where he holds his jumper passionately and one where he says **** you...
