Fair to assume he can. Had a career high 35 disposals in 2017 and averaged 20 disposals that year. Not sure why he was out of the side in the first half of 2018 (perhaps they had some mids come back?) but plays rounds 1, 4 and then from round 11 onwards and I believe plays more of a backline role after Mills broke his foot in round 9. The versatile 25-year-old was unlucky to be dropped after gathering 19 possessions in Sydney's round one win over West Coast, and despite playing 20 games last season in defence and on a wing, he looks to be out of favour. Newman's leg speed is his biggest issue where he can be exposed in the midfield, and with Jarrad McVeigh, Jake Lloyd, Callum Mills and Nick Smith locks as small defenders, there doesn't seem to be a spot for him at the moment. I know its only the NEAFL but that's Tom Mitchell numbers when he couldn't crack the Sydney midfield in the NEAFL as well. Best position is probably midfield and gives us a mature body to block for Crippa and crash n bash id suggest. May be what has been promised to him and why he chose to come to us rather than sign on at the Swans. Play him in his best position and lets see what he delivers.

I have a recollection of our former captain attempting to lay a tackle vs Sydney in the last game of 2017. Think it was on Newman and Newman flat out embarrassed him with the ease he got through it.

Was it Newman or another Swan?

He can still pull off some ripping kicks and his goalkicking is accurate if he gets a sniff, but I always thought Swans fans overrated him just because the rest of our team can't kick for crap so he stood out when he did do some good things.

Not a star and don't think he'll become one but I like the pick up. I watched a fair bit of him for Supercoach purposes in 2017 and he was a handy footballer. Certainly an upgrade over some of the kids or list cloggers we've been forced to play the last 2 seasons.

Everyone always loves the unknown of a draft pick and the potential to find someone far greater than their spot suggests, but at this stage we're desperate for players like Newman. He's a proven AFL player. Seems like another guy to fall out of favour with Longmire. Not really surprising either when you consider that the Swans have a lot of similar types to Newman.

Competition for spots is always great too. I can't see this bloke being another O'Shea, Shaw or Mullett. They were 3 blokes basically done at AFL level and we stupidly gave them lifelines.

Good pickup by the Blues. Newman and Docherty will be a handy half back duo in 2019.

Seems like a real tough nut not afraid to shirk a contest. Picked up disposals, marks and tackles in 2017 so does everything. 2018 out of favour early which is the only question mark I want filled then came in and played out of position to cover Mills injury and you can see that in his stats. More of a hbf than deep defence and then can roll into the middle to get amongst it and get his body in there to help out. training with the likes of Kennedy and Hannebury he will be battle hardened and of that mindset. The only knock on him seems to be his speed but thats ok we need players to play roles not someone who can do everything. That doesnt exist... except Cripps.
 
From OR on TC why we didnt take Newman via PSD -

It was done to maintain credibility and good relations with the Swans which counts for heaps.

Future 4th is pretty much loose change & well worth the cost. We now have certainty he'll be at Carlton & the Swans are content with the deal.

Makes total sense; and good sense at that.
It's a small industry.
Maintaining good relations with gestures that don't cost much, is a smart way of helping furnish deals in future.

I think he'll definitely get games for us across half back. Certainly can find and use the ball and is a good size, lack of pace is the biggest drawback.

Cost very little, and given the recent departure of Byrne provides a ready-to-go replacement option.

Solid rather than a star. Not a waste, nor a steal.
