Definitely not a better player than Byrne, but a handy pickup nonetheless
Maybe take the blinkers off. Byrne is gone. Byrne was handy with potential but he made a lot of mistakes also. Like most of the Irish players he had flaws that were likely to always be there. Newman I dont know much about but he made finals in a perennially strong team and that is the real benchmark.

Just had a read through the Newman thread on the Sydney board, and there are a few comments regarding his kicking being a bit iffy this year - and not quite up to the standard he'd perhaps shown in 2017.

As we know, our gameplan this year tended to paint most in a bad light skill-wise, and not many shone in this regard, but we'll hopefully look to move the ball more quickly next season, and be able to run a little harder for longer to get and give the ball in more space - which should help to bring the best out of the likes of Newman, and his left foot. Could see him take a share of the kick-in duties in 2019, too.

All in all, well worth a punt for pick ~75 or whatever.

Comfortably better than Byrne.

Not sure where the love from Byrne started.

Nic Newman is a great addition.
I think it started from people watching him play football. Byrne had great speed, balance and an ability to read the ball in the air. If his body wasn't made of glass he could have been anything. Newman is an honest footballer with an afl body and a reasonable left peg. He will fill a need in 2019.

If true then he will be shithouse at carlton. One thing we do well is undevelop players. Expect him to be turning it over within a month or 2 at carlton with our development skills

Byrne or the 2nd coming of Christ as some on here think, average at best and body couldn't cope. The tears over his leaving is astonishing.

I watched him play plenty of football.

Had some talent and some AFL attributes but I think you're overrating his ability by a fair margin. Game sense was poor and would regularly make poor decisions with the ball. Newman is a step up in every category aside from pace and agility.

Handy Simmo replacement, with a one-year overlap for working out the kinks.

Courageous in the air, with a good pair of hands.
Desperate on the ground.
Tidy left foot.
Not super quick, but goes with intent.
Loves the physical stuff.

Will complement our other defenders well. He and Willo driving off HB, allowing Docherty to play loose. Yum.

How?
Played more games
Averages more disposals
Averages more marks
Averages same number of tackles.

Also manages to be on the park for more than 6 games a year.

You can have all the talent in the world but if you can’t stay on the park, you are a waste of everyone’s time

I always liked the look of this guy,can play at both ends, knows his way around goals, impressive left foot, can take a decent grab and more importantly, has a little bit of the swans IP!:thumbsu:
Fourth rounder next year,Bargain!:)
Welcome to the Mailman!;)

Hopefully an Agresta special. I wonder if he will be best 22. Need is there for a quick, skilled and smart attacking half back without doubt.
Swans best 22
Last 8 games
Should get a spot by that alone
Fingers crossed

Lefty from the peninsula :thumbsu:
This one has Agresta's fingerprints all over it ...
Can someone find out where his folks live so I can go deliver some lovely flowers to them,or if it’s a Friday night maybe some fish and chips?!

This is how I see it too. Was also pretty low production.

Had ability, but not a massive loss.
