Whilst many of our players have had interrupted pre-seasons it sounds like Stringer is as fit as he's ever been in his time here

In the midst of his club’s wretched summer injury run, Essendon gun Jake Stringer says he’s never been in better shape after experiencing one of his best and smoothest pre-seasons of his AFL career.

A host of key Bombers have, at different stages over the past few months, battled a range of injuries or suffered setbacks, including Joe Daniher (groin), Cale Hooker (hip), Dylan Shiel (knee) David Zaharakis (knee), Dyson Heppell (foot), Michael Hurley (shoulder) and Orazio Fantasia (hip).

However Stringer, who battled foot, knee and hamstring issues to play 19 of a possible 23 games in 2019, has not just been a constant presence on the track, but also one of Essendon’s best trainers.

In his eighth AFL pre-season, Stringer recently ran a personal best in the 2km time trial, slashing a whopping 20 seconds off his previous top time.

Asked on SEN Breakfast how he was going physically, Stringer cheekily said: ā€œI’m borderline flying at the minute … nah I’m going well.ā€

The 25-year-old said it’d been ā€œone of the hardest pre-seasons I’ve ever doneā€. He hailed the influence of the Bombers’ new head of strength and conditioning Sean Murphy, who’s come across from Hawthorn and ā€œreally tested us physically and mentallyā€.

ā€œNot being injured is a massive part and I don't think I've missed a session the whole pre-season, which is all you can ask for when you go into a pre-season is complete as many sessions as you can. I’d be probably in the top one or two at the club that hasn’t missed,ā€ Stringer told SEN on Friday morning.

Asked if it’d been one of his smoothest AFL pre-seasons yet, Stringer declared: ā€œYeah, by far.

ā€œLast year was pretty good, but this year’s been taken to a new level with Sean Murphy coming across. He's really pushed the boundaries with me.

ā€œIt's been a hard slog and, don't worry, I'm looking forward to playing and getting out of this pre-season phase.ā€

Even though Stringer is ā€œflyingā€, he said seven or eight teammates are still not in full training, but the ā€œmajority of them were runningā€.

ā€œNot everything's gone to plan, obviously. There's been a few blokes that are still not quite into full training, but that's part of football and part of the pre-season. You’ve just got to deal with whatever comes,ā€ Stringer said.

He later added: ā€œWe’re in a great position to able to springboard into the season and hopefully get a few more of these top echelon blokes back.ā€

The first-round draft pick kicked 98.55 for the Bulldogs in 2015 and 2016 before being traded ahead of the 2018 season to the Bombers, where he’s spent recent summers training with the on-ballers.

Stringer said the plan was still for him to play a mixture of midfield and forward minutes this season, but added he’d been training primarily with the attacking group this pre-season and ā€œhoning in on my craft as a forwardā€.

Stringer said Essendon’s succession plan, which will see senior coach John Worsfold gradually hand the reins to assistant Ben Rutten throughout 2020, was working well. He said Worsfold was at the club everyday and engaged with the players, but Rutten took charge of all tactical discussions and meetings.

ā€œThe work that John and Ben have done together has been absolutely outstanding and literally the smoothest transition that you could possibly ever see. It's a credit to both of them how well it's actually gone,ā€ Stringer said.

ā€œI couldn’t be happier with where the club is at the minute.ā€

Stringer said there’d be a noticeable but not dramatic change to the club’s game plan this season.

ā€œIt’ll definitely be a lot more consistent,ā€ Stringer said.

ā€œFrom a whole learning (process) and even in training, you’re seeing it more and more every time we’re doing bits of match ā€˜sim’. I think it’ll be very noticeable when people come to watch us.ā€

Dodgy Big Mac apparently.

In fairness though they showed some training footage last night when reporting on his illness and he left looked in good nick. Good pick up by the Giants but glad we didn’t offer him 2 years to give others a go in forward spot

It makes sense if the rebuild is on for the Dons. Gets some games into the next generation.

Stringer is just making sure his skinfolds are even better for round 0.

Super excited to see what he brings against Collingwood in Round 0. Think he will be a handful in this new setup.

Our rebuild started at the end of 2022 on and off the field. As for Stringer, it made sense because he hasn't put two 40+ goal seasons in a row since 2016 and to think he was was a surety to start doing it again at the wrong end of 30 was unlikely. Defensive liability too, for every goal he scored he probably cost us 2 or 3 goals the other way.

Your club is desperate in the wake of some departures of your own so it probably makes sense you'll take a punt.

Fact check pls.

Not something that's clear in stats you have to actually watch games to know. We were basically playing with a man down especially later in the season. I wasn't alone in seeing this either it was part of the commentary throughout.

And the bloke hasn't kicked more than 40 goals 2 years in a row since 2015/2016. That's not an observation, that's a fact. You'd think before you demand a 2 year contract you'd at least prove you can do it after 9 years first.

9 years.

Would be pinned for HTB in the F50 on more occasions than anyone could count. Ball would literally fly out of our F50 regularly and he was 100% a huge part to blame for that. Destroyed the structure/stability of the team to pad out his own stats which came to a head after Round 16 when even the goals went ghost. I'm glad he's gone.

I reckon we will see him thrive at the Giants. His defensive tackling rating is actually quite high which surprised me. He looks fit....and if he isn't....he'll get dropped. Guess we will see in the first 5 weeks of the season.
His defensive problem is the gap between good and bad. He had some really good games where he had well above average tackle numbers and then he had some where he was simply horrible. The numbers are also slightly skewed by the fact he played a bit in the middle at center bounce. He had 14 games where he had 2 or less tackles. 7 games with 3 and 4 tackles which is fine plus one game wit 5 and one with 10 against Fremantle. Trust me you will be disappointed if you are expecting some sort of consistent pressure. I hope he does well. We made a call based on his injuries and wanting to go forward with some younger players.

I have no issue with the call from the bombers to trade him. His ceiling and floor are miles apart....but for us he's a cream on top player rather than pillar of consistency.
Just need him to go crazy from time to time and string together some early wins

100% that's why he's good for you.
For you he catches fire and goes ballistic you win a flag.

For us he does that and snags us a couple wins we should have had and we finish higher than our play deserves.

Keen to see how he goes for you, it should result in some exciting moments

I want to see that too to be honest. Particularly against teams like Sydney, Hawthorn and Carlton so if you can tee that up that'd be grouse. :D

As an aside; I don't think you'll find many Essendon fans (apart from the odd nuffie) who don't wish Jake the very best.
Was well loved as an Essendon player if somewhat frustrating at times re: his fitness. It is odd to hear he's training the house down and potentially leading training standards as we would've loved that here, but personally I really hope he does well this year for you. If he gets you a flag I'll happily celebrate his achievement.

'Stringer has loved his early life in Sydney. After 12 seasons of playing footy in Victoria, he’s not missing the Melbourne weather. In fact, by his own admission, he doesn’t believe he’s put a jumper on since making the move in November last year.'

BREAKING: man dosent wear jumper in summer...

My take away from that article is Essendon didn't even have the stones to tell him they were trading him because he was an aging mudguts. It certainly sounds like guilt by association because Stringer was good mates with Hind and they lent on that rather than having a difficult discussion.
