Player Watch #30: Reece Conca

We effectively offered him up for free last year and no one wanted him. He's happy in Melbourne playing for us and will cost minimal coin. If he's not injured he won't go anywhere.

If he continues on in the same vein for the rest of the season he’ll get some reasonable offers which will tempt him.

Also, We won’t get any compo for him if he does leave bc he’s on very low coin now. Lots of water to go under the bridge by then anyway

If he continues like this and doesn't get injured we'll offer him a fair contract, which he'll take, so it doesn't matter anyway.

Spot on, I’m glad someone else can see past bullshit DE stats which have absolutely no bearing on showing who can kick it well and who can’t. Useless misleading stat.

I really like what Conca is doing this season in the guts, it’s legit the best he’s ever looked for us, he just needs to learn to play within his limitations bc his kicking is suspect and always will be under pressure with that ball drop. If he learns to do that (which I suspect he will given our coaches records with other players) he will be a very handy “recruit” to our midfield.

His is like a recruit. He is a new addition to the midfield. Increases our depth and so the quality of the squad. Fantastic pick up from .... us.

I've always thought he had the ability to be pretty good. Just has always gotten injured again. If he stays fit we are a better side. Like that increased depth on 2017. hopefully will help us go one better this year.

Oh wait. :D

How about, hopefully he'll help us perform the same as 2017 in 2018. :thumbsu:

Geez it’d be a fairly low act if he makes it through the season and gets an offer elsewhere that he takes after we’ve put up with four season of injuries. I wouldn’t have thought that was too likely. It only ever happens usually when someone wants a fresh start but that ship has sailed, he’s back healthy again.

If we get fair compo (which we would if he has a good season) who cares, **** even if we don’t. Football isn’t a long career and he is entitled to chase as big a pay cheque as he can get if that’s what we wants, just as the club is entitled to cut any player they want.

The best clubs like Geelong, Adelaide, Sydney and Hawks have all facilitated trades for players looking to get more money than they can offer because they know it builds a stronger culture for the players.

I’d care cos he’s sat on the list for the last four years in the rehab group. He should by all accounts have been delisted a couple years ago after yet another injury set back. We are only five rounds into the season, if he breaks down yet again it’ll only validate the thought that we should have cut our losses a couple years back and got in a kid we could have actually put some development into.

We stuck by him while he spent the last four seasons injured when most clubs would have cut a player, he’s taken up resources and a list spot and then he finally gets healthy and clears off to another club? That wouldn’t be right.

The club made their choice to take the risk if they get burnt that’s what happens. The business is inherently risky.

If he wants to leave so be it, he has made his decision and proved he isn’t the type of person we want at the club. No great loss and we get a pick in a strong draft.

You can’t control people’s behaviors and decisions, why bother getting upset/letting it affect the club. Move on with a player who’s behaviors and personality might better fit our culture.

Would further add what if we can only offer a 200-300k contract because of Lynch/increases elsewhere but WCE or Freo or #lolnorf offer 4-500k. A huge ask to tell a middling player halfway thru his AFL career to leave 200k on the table. I wouldn’t do it no matter how much I loved the club... at least at that money (getting into the 5-600k+ you can leave more money on the table as it’s easier to make it up elsewhere)

If he leaves via Free Agency we could possibly get an end of 2nd rounder if his contract is like $450k x 3 years ....... Maybe
Im cool with that if we dont get Lynch but if Lynch does come would rather we trade with WC as they would be losing a free agent now also and we could probably do it for a minor upgrade like their 3rd

That would be ideal a second rounder as we could then as you say disperse money onto Lynch or up the pays of some of our whipper snippers that will demand more as they get better. Future is just as important as the present. Conca is atm imo valued at 250-300k and Balme got him at unders bc of his unreliability in terms of fitness/injury history. So if he continues to perform and improve plus stay fit then a second rounder would be a blessing and I will personally drive him to where he wants to go . There's no way i would be paying overs for Reece bc we did that once before and got burnt.
He's a Grigg type and needs a 1-2 year contracts to keep him hungry and performing for a living.Anything over 300k for him and i would say bye bye bc we have a lot of young talent on our list who i would prefer on the list.

I won’t be cancelling my membership or losing sleep over it, but it’s still a pretty shit act.

If we get a decent pick then great, I’d probably consider it a win for the club and be happy it’s happened. Doesn’t change my view that walking out on a club that stood by you for four years of injury is a low act.

He won’t leave unless the money is too good. If the money is too good then he has the right to do what’s best for his life and I won’t personally think any less of him.

We won't get anything for Conca if he leaves as a free agent even if Lynch doesn't come as a free agent himself. Given his recent injury troubles I can't see any club paying him $450k+ to get us a good pick. I can see another club offering him a Matt White type of deal worth $1m over 3 years which may prise him away as it gives him security, especially if we're only offering a 1-2 year deal on minimal money.

Haha no one is going to pay big money for a guy thats played like 12 games in 4 years. I guess we are discussing this from different angles cos that thought hadn’t even crossed my mind.

That being said, he’s lucky he earned any AFL money the last two years so he should take that into account ;)

Collingwood is paying Mayne 500k anything is possible.

But he won’t leave if he is playing unless the money is too good.

why so salty, all your've done in the past is bag him, now he's fit your still on his case. let it go.

Only get decent compo when they’re offered a bomb , so to speak like > 600-700, that ain’t gonna happen

Played a few decent games and suddenly people forget all the dog shit hes dished up. Cool your jets. Hes got a long way to go to prove he is consistently up to it.

His disposal is still suspect, and that gets highlighted in the big pressure moments.

From what I've seen this season, he has improved but god we needed him too. He still manages a couple of dumb arse mistakes though, but I prefer this Reece Conca than previous years, still cant see any other team rushing to poach him from us just yet though.

Before he got injured last year, he was turning me. Then this year when he came out, he played like a complete gumby. Hopefully we see some good inside contested and 'smart' dish offs. Because he usually doesnt panic dish off fearing tackles like BEllis, but stupidly dumps forward, or tries to hit a 1/10 pass thats has disastrous turnover effects. Hopefully we see 'smart' Reece for the rest of the season.
