Player Watch #30: Reece Conca

Can’t look at this thread without Dyson Heppell coming to mind and my God had that bloke gone backwards at a rate of knots.
He is now just a very very ordinary player with no great asset that comes to mind.

I have never ever rated Heppell. Always felt he was grossly overrated by the media and bombers fans. Has been exposed the past few seasons as a bit of a plodder.

You think that might have something to do with the team and options he is presented having to kick the ball between players that have no seperation and being an out side player playing in a team with no inside mids cant be easy

Has never been a good kick of the footy. Is a tidy inside player, one grabs it but is one paced and kicking skills are average, always have been

I think he has always been overrated but I can see his good traits too. Disappointingly too I met him at the GF last year and he was a really nice bloke who wanted us to win.

He's never really recovered from the death of his pretzels!

He seems to be playing injury free and seriously fit, the first time in years. So using stats to back up that will swing it your way.
I have always backed Conca, and consider him a very talented footballer. I may be wrong, but Miles won't be the player replacing him if he falls short.

100% agree.

He was overated early days but the skills were there and it seemed only a matter of time before he became one of the games elite. I think a better gameplan would help a lot of their players.

Our game plan revolves around maintaining high pressure all over the field and when we win the ball spreading hard from the contest to open up the opposition. Miles has been tried in this style and has constantly been exposed as not being good enough. The other thing with Miles is his lack of flexibility, Miles is an inside midfielder and that's pretty much it. You can't throw him on to a wing or into defence if things aren't going well. With guys like Conca McIntosh & the Ellis boys they have the ability to play those multiple roles. Interestingly this is never acknowledged by Miles' fans when discussing why he isn't picked, it's always he isn't a favourite of Dimma.

Steve Morris is another player to have 3 straight top 10 finishes in the Jack Dyer medal and he was roundly criticised as being no good and an honest toiler who was lucky to have lasted as long as he did. Kind of puts into perspective that record of Miles having finished top 10 3 years in a row.

Did you watch the VFL yesterday?
CEllis can play multiple roles ... just none of them any good.
Ineffective in the midfield, ineffective across half back.
Poor for a third straight week at VFL level.
What was the excuse this week?
Lack of pre-season?
Family problems?
Injuries that no other player has?
Simply no good.

LOL ... you tell me Shane Edwards is elite yet has two top 10 b&f finishes in a career.
So what does that tell you about the b&f.
It's difficult to dispute that Miles was in our top five players all three years. He would have won it in 2014 if he didn't waste half a year in the Twos.

What's nonsense? Miles isn't capable of playing as a rebounding HB or as a gut running wing or as a high HF. He has been tried in the high HF role and has had little to no impact in that role. He plays his best as an inside midfielder, unfortunately for him there are better options playing that role ahead of him, like Martin Cotchin Lambert & Prestia while others like Grigg Edwards Conca & McIntosh are players who also have the ability to play those other roles. If Miles' fans are wanting him picked in the side the player he'd be pushing out would be Graham, but Grahams pressure rating is better than Miles and he also has a bigger upside.

When was he tried as a rebounding defender, or high half forward. You're making it up!

In ya dreams mate, If CEllis is offered for trade or wants out... 17 other clubs would be interested and bidding would start north of 300k too. Milesy didnt get a nibble last year and sadly/good luck to him, he's likely to be playing for a rich country club next year.

Given CEllis was damn ordinary for a third week in a row at VFL level, who are these 17 clubs champing at the bit to get a hold of this boy wonder????
I'd suggest 17 Essendon District or Loddon Valley league clubs o_O

No I didn't watch the VFL yesterday, if Ellis was poor then he needs to do something to turn it around.

It tells me that the B&F isn't that big of a deal when it comes to labelling players as being good or not. Brandon Ellis finished runner up 1 year. Vickery has a top 5 finish as well.

Miles has been tried as a high half forward and has struggled to impact, he hasn't played as a rebounding defender because he can't play the role. So thanks for proving the point that I've been making about Miles not being picked because he lacks flexibility.

Corey Ellis provided plenty of class and poise off half-back, collecting 25 disposals.
I'll just leave this here.

When did he play as a high half forward? What, three minutes of a game?

It was, guess the eyes and ears only see and hear what they want to.
What! I've just been reading that he must have gotten 2.5 shit disposals and isn't good enough to play EFL!!!
Posters on here don't have agendas, do they?

I'm not going to trawl through games to find when he has played there but he has played there. If you say he hasn't just gives further weight to the belief that he lacks flexibility to play different roles, hence why he is not being picked

I think you'll fin he's likely been one of the most consistent player we've had at senior level, but you'll continue to nit-pick his game to deflect from the non-performance of your poster boy CEllis.

If only you understood Ellis isn't my favourite.

As for Miles I don't disagree that he was a consistent player. The issue is that he isn't suited to the current gameplan and its quite possible that Ellis isn't either.

He looked to play HBF today.

Thought he went into the centre and became the player we wanted and now he is out again.
Which is really weird, given Cotchin out and Prestia injured.
