Player Watch #30: Reece Conca

I have read a lot of people recently saying let's get him in for him to play finals.
In my eyes, playing him in finals this year would be beyond stupid, asking for trouble, and ultimately shooting ourselves in the foot.

He just got back from an ankle issue, and then sprained his other ankle. He's been injury prone the last few years and has gone down in games multiple times (including once in a final vs North that cost us the game) leaving us short on the bench, he has a limited fitness base because of all these issues and rushing him in to a final on the back of limited VFL time would the stupidest thing the match committee could do.

Simple. Dont play him at vfl level.

Bring him in at afl level this week and manage his time. Just like we managed cotchins time vs gcs.

Then aim to play him for the full game va the dogs.

He played 64 of 70 scheduled minutes last week.

Agree with that, makes no difference getting minutes at VFL to AFL so may aswell not waste a week in getting him up to speed. Providing his ankle is right to go, especially to cover prestia and lambo

First lambo now prestia. We simply have to get time into conca just in case others like lambo pretia or whoever dont get up or do cop an injury.

Theres no vfl this week. So afl it is for him if his rolled ankle is given the all clear.

Normally I wouldn't agree, let them find form in the VFL, but Houli has slotted straight back in after missing about the same amount of weeks very nicely. 19 VFL possessions in just over a half last weekend means his fitness must be okay. Last year when he came back from long term injury he was pretty ordinary in the VFL.

So why not let him find form/get match hardened against Essendon when we are missing two similar types. If his ankle is okay. Doesn't make him best 22 right now, but at least if he get a gig come final he is used to the tempo etc. Rather see Conca mixing it up at the coalface than Cotchin right now (save him for finals).

A rolled ankle sometimes comes good after 20 mins. No swelling, just minor soreness for a few hours after a game. If that's the case, he played nearly all the minutes they wanted from him, and he gets through full training, slot him in. Needs game level hardness for finals (if he makes it there without another injury- sorry karma believers ;)).

Much too big of a flight risk, for a player who isn't in our top 15 players.
Would be a high risk low reward move.

He was just stringing so me great games together off of confidence more than anything else pre the ankle, if fit this week with Lambo and Prestia out he plays imo.

Injuries are often unlucky and you could mount an argument that Prestia is equally injury prone, class is what auto, picks Prestia though.

I back our MC to select the right balance each week and if that’s Conca or Menadue/Lloyd then so be it, two rounds left, take a punt as it just may reward us in the next month or so.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting to bring him in straight for finals.

He needs to gain some sort of match fitness before finals, whether that be AFL or a VFL match that’s it. I actually don’t mind the suggestion of him playing this week as a direct replacement for Lambert and even more so if Prestia doesn’t get up. Only if he’s pulled up from last week ok thouhh

Top 15? What has it turned into Rugby Union?
Since we need 22 players I reckon his footy was top 22 this year. No Prestia again & no Lambert for a while. A great chance for him to Conca to cement his spot.

If it's a bottom 6 player though, I'm taking the one that's less of a flight risk into finals, that's not coming off a low fitness base and a history of injuries and breaking down.

My point is he is high risk low reward this year.

I'll back the fitness team and MC. If he plays it's a sign we're taking the Bombres as a warm up for finals. If he plays well then our depth just got a great deal better.

Surely a fully fit Lloyd is better option than Conca at the moment who has 2 dodgy ankles.

Re rolling the dice and playing him in the 1s due to not having a VFL game what happens when he hobbles off in the first Q? Rotations go out the window other mids have a bigger workload as a result which is the last thing you want after a long season leading into the finals

The fitness team have nothing to do with Conca’s unreliable body as he’s struggled on and off for 8 seasons. He’s failed in both finals he played in and in one of them he was rushed back under done.
No way does he play especially after suffering another scare last week. He needs vfl time imo.

VFL have a bye this week too so if he hadnt rolled it he’d be playing in the seniors this week I reckon

Just a matter of how he comes up and if he can play with the discomfort

Yes his previous years have been dogged with injury, but this season his body looked strong and lean and he had an edge around the ball once he got some continuity into his game. His injury was due to a very tough tackle, could have been anyone. Just think, if his ankle is okay, why not get a game into a player that is depth that might be needed if we have a run of injuries in the finals.

Irrelevant as he was injured last year and then again this year. Sadly injuries seem to follow him and it's rotten luck, but facts are facts.

As they followed Grimes and Astbury for years. Of course he is a risk of sorts given his injury run, but this year and last were contact injuries, not the soft tissue one's of previous. Still think he is worth backing, as our inside depth is not great, and he suits and knows our high intensity style.

I guess my main point with it though was sometimes there is zero discomfort after an ankle roll within 24 hours. He'd basically done his allocated minutes of game time so this is a possible scenario.

He did lay 7 tackles in 64 min of footy before he rolled his ankle.
Thats pretty good.
If he trained without it flaring up I’d give him a run.
And I know this might be throwing some petrol on some ashes but I think it could be the last chance of the year for Menadue.
Bummers might be too quick for loyd
