Player Watch #30: Reece Conca

Everything is good in hindsight but I think Conca was the right pick at the time. Was best available and overlooked due to broken leg in his final year before the draft. Heppell had hamstring issues but that was likely talked up so he would fall to Essendon. Generally getting soft tissue problems at 17 is a bad omen.

Lynch would of been great too but we were terrible then and needed a midfielder even more than a forward. Been so unlucky with injuries. Hope he plays well and can stay in the team to win a flag

That’s re-writing history. I was a Conca fan when we picked him but we were the only ones taking him inside the top 10. If memory serves he only got invited to draft night at the last minute cos we were gonna pick him. He wasn’t considered a top 30.

He was definitely considered top 30 but not a lot had him top 20.

Anyway, he was terrific tonight. Better than The Worst Captain in the AFL Yes Even Worse Than Marc Murphy.

With Lambert, Cotch and Prestia to come back into that midfield I don’t see conca in the team come finals but between him, Lloyd and Miles I am more than happy with our depth. Played well last night Conca.

He'll get a spot in the best 22. As Dimma said (TWICE in the one interview this week), he is very popular with the playing group. But secretly he meant 'himself'.
Conca played his role though.
Your right though, with Lambert suggested as being right for finals, if we keep everyone healthy, selection is going to be crazy difficult.

Played a good game against an outside the eight side who have a poor midfield.
Reece is sadly just a good depth player and I said yesterday his spot will be lost once the three big boys return.
His only chance is to replace KMac BEllis or Higgins and he’s way down on that list as they’ve performed better all year in their roles ( especially after being dropped) and they’re all more reliable in terms of fitness as well as speed.
He will most likely be emergency in our finals unless a serious misfortune happens to certain players he’s competing for a spot with.
Great game last night though considering he was on the sidelines for weeks. I purchased this wiz bang nine types of pasta making machine during the week , so I might make up some lasagna.

Cats, Gws and the bummers had a go at run and gun through the corridor.
And they all got through us.
Conca and Graham didnt play against two of those...
I reckon I’d pick Conca ahead of Higgo for finals.

They’ll ask themselves that question many times over as finals loom

Exceeded expectations I reckon. Expecting some sloppiness after not much footy, but was pretty sharp by hand especially. Going to be interesting at the selection table next few weeks.
I think he'll stay in. Dimma has always loved him.

He's pretty tough around the ball, so any further injury notwithstanding I reckon he's almost guaranteed to play all games until we win the flag.

He certainly deserves to, and I've always been a fan. But 3 midfielders coming back in means 3 out from last night. Baker obviously, Lloyd probably but played well last night. Conca, Higgins and Graham all deserve games. Butler looks to be too far back almost now. Interesting times.

Graham probably stays.

LLoyd I really hope stays, I really rate him, but I think he's going to be a victim of last in/ first out policy.

Reckon Higgo may be sacrificed, which is a shame.

Baker definitely out, as you say. Great mullet, but he's not ready yet.

Great game from Conca. Got down and dirty and looked good in somewhat limited game time. Funnily enough probably had one of his lowest pressure applied games for the year but still right up there for our team.

We wouldn't rush an injury-prone player back into the AFL side off the back of 3/4 of a VFL game unless he was highly rated by the coaching staff and at the very least in serious contention for the best 22 come finals time. I reckon Conca makes the 22 in the Qualifying Final in a few weeks time.

I would keep him in if he continues to keep his clanger rate low. No doubt this is because he's out of the backline. As a mid, does ok. Last night, 21 possies and 5 tackles. And after a fair spell on the sidelines. Graham, 15 possies and 6 tackles. Love his other pressure acts though (diving smothers etc). Conca should hold his spot, but there is a fight for spots coming for mid roles. Could he do a wing role when Prestia, Cotch and Lambert take those mid minutes from him? Lambert struggled imo when he came out of the mids.

A few are forgetting he was a reg member of a winning team until injured
We had Graham and Prestia out in stints. We’ve never fielded our best midfield all year. Who goes out when all the cavalry is back? Also Higgins looks like a regular fixture who is in direct competition.

There’s a bit to go before we understand who is ready to go , I don’t believe butler will come straight back in , he ll play a vfl final . It may come down to Higgo v conca and that will be a tough decision. If conca put in another performance like last night next week , he d go along way to firming a spot.
