Up the Coasters 30 years since the 1992 flag

Had just turned 8. Watched it at home on a 34cm Akai TV. We upgraded to a 51cm Sanyo for 1994.

Have plenty of game memories like Peter Wilson's 'cork in the ocean' goal, 'Matera sets sail for home!', Mainy leaping off the bench with a bung ankle etc.

I wonder how many people looking back vividly remember only 4 players kicking 16.5 between them and another 8 players kicking 0.11?

One thing I will always remember is the news coverage of the day. The Royal Show was on and they had cameras down there in the morning with the footy starting at 12.50pm our time. A handful of people were in and out for the day by lunchtime and the Showgrounds were totally deserted. I know people that didn't watch 2006 or 2018 and people, but I don't think anyone in the state wasn't watching in 1992.

It gets overlooked with time but that was a young team. Only 6 players out of a squad of 20 (just the two on the bench then) were older than 24 and the most experienced player had played 131 games. We had a couple of guys with prior VFL/WAFL experience but a GF winning side with under 1600 games total experience (1753 pro rata for 22 players) is pretty rare. WC 1992 were younger and less experienced than the 2016 WB or 2021 Melbourne and people still carry on like we walked into the comp with an off the shelf dynasty side.

It might be Mandela effect but I swear the players drank EE tins on the field after the game.
In WA the players were like Hollywood or rock stars back then.

Some of the more underrated moments I remember appreciating as a 12 year old:

-Ablett lining up Jackovich in the 3rd and coming off second best. Was great to see after he ironed out Pyke.

- Evans kicking 2 in 2 minutes in the second to put eagles within striking distance. Loved his scrap and bravery.

-Sumich kicking six, fantastic performance.

-Lamb's rundown of Robert Scott was epic.

-Sliding doors moments like Abletts ridiculous torp shank when he tried to kick a goal from 55m out from a free kick. Wouldve put Geelong 3 goals up midway thru the 3rd if he kicked it.

Then the 3 goal combo of Evans, Cork in the Ocean, and Setting sail for home to put the eagles in front.

- Langdon barely getting a clean possession all day but providing plenty of grunt. Langdon and Wilson were instrumental in being the only 2 players in that side with a bit of mongrel during that era.

Watched it at PRSC in Albany with around 70-100 others on I think it was a projector screen. Very nervous room at half time but the eruption with the Matera sets sail for home was epic, could have heard it across the harbour in town I reckon.

Back in the days where a jug was about $7 I think. Had some good times at that place.

Can't let that last point go without comment. Woosha had more mongral than the pair of those blokes put together (and that's no slight on Willow or Langdon). Evans had plenty too, went very close to knocking some blokes out with dirty elbows that day but the umpires set the tone when Ablett was allowed to elbow Pyke in the back of the head , out cold, and nary a free kick to be paid.

Yeah but Woosh wasn't volatile like them, he was the smiling assassin fair enough with his idgaf shirtfronts and remonstrated a bit, but as far as hot headed scrappers go its Wilson and Langdon to me that led the way in giving it back to the Vics back then.

Yeah maybe. But you ask oppo teams back then who was the most intimidating bloke in blue and gold I reckon woosha gets the votes easy.

Woosha was tough as **** with plenty of Mongrel. Chris Lewis.... even Peter matera would lose his shit. Pretty tough team through the lines I reckon.

Woosha didn't become an enforcer until the early 90s when he bulked up to play on the big forwards of that era and dished out the big hits on players with their head over the ball. WCE were seen as timid outside players by the VFL when they first entered the comp and it was Langdon and Wilson that were some of the only guys to give it back a bit before then.

So 92 when we won the premiership which this thread is about

...

Suma had his fair share of scalps, he just didn't get worked up about it - killed 'em and got on with kicking another bag.

Loved Willo, hard as a cat's head.

That entire HB line was pretty tough. They weren't mad dogs but they definitely were not outside or timid. I reckon a line of McKenna, Woosha and Jacko put a lot of hurt on forwards. They may have worn glasses and looked like Clark Kent off the field but most blokes came off second best against them.

Looking back on that GF a couple of years ago when I showed my boys, 1 thing that realy surprised me was Ken Hinckley. I didnt even recall him as a player back then but he was extremely good that day. Probably wins the Norm if Geelong win and Matera didnt go into God mode.

Imagine kicking 5 goals off a wing in the Grand Final. Ridiculous.

It's a real shame that the clever paddling of the ball, handballing to themselves etc the Matera (and others around the league) used to do has been eliminated from the game. Ball players seem to just get dragged to the ground without repercussion these days.
