Player Watch #32: Tom Sparrow

It's only a two year contract so the Crows will probably make a play for him anyway.

They will offer a future third and get mad at us for not taking their generous offer.

While demanding a first for some injury prone 30 year old who nominates us.

On the bright side in 2026 when we are shit again we can angle for some Ben McKay like compo when Sparrow leaves.

Danster pr0n 🤤

Very nice.

A few observations:

1. Both hands on the wheel mate. Ten to two please. Left hand leaning constantly on the gear stick of an automatic except when snuffling your nostrils is not best practice.

2. Might give some thought to cleaning those windows, particularly the hardened gob of bird crap near the right-hand mirror.

3. I couldn’t help noticing that driving to the airport he passed St Kilda and drove along beach road. I started wondering where he lived. Elwood? Brighton maybe? Probably not St Kilda itself given this was a fair way into the interview.

And this was the exact moment I began to wonder where my life is headed, given I’ve just spent a good few minutes pondering Sparrow’s living arrangements.

Bloke hasn’t shown improvement since 21. Never seen anyone plateue like this bloke. One of Goodwin’s favourites.

0 clearances from 25 CBAs in the pre season match said it all.

If you're quoting his centre clearance numbers then you haven't paid attention to how he plays. He's never been a centre clearance player, why would you want him going in hard for the clearance when we have Trac, Viney and Oliver?

Now, if you want to talk about his horrible handle of the ball tonight that's another story. He wasn't alone there of course, but he was probably our worst in that area.

Went full Tom Sparrow tonight, 12-18 possessions of nothingness the usual script and he did exactly that. Holds his form well.

Because Goodwin plays him in the Centre Clearances? The area we got smashed in tonight.

Mate, he averages 0.6 centre clearances for his career. It's not his role to win the clearance. Plenty to bag him for tonight, but that one is a silly call out.

Yet Goodwin continues to play him in the guts. That’s my whole point.

Why play blokes in clearances who can’t win a ****en clearance?

If we want a negating player then that means we arnt backing our system and admitting we will always have a bloke 2nd to the ball every ball up.

And if that isn’t his role then what it is because I don’t see it as he can’t distribute for shit either.

You're missing the point though. Not everyone who attends a centre bounce is there to go in at ground level and try to win it out. Melbourne fans above all should be aware of this fact. It's not a 'negating' player. It's a player who can receive it on the outside and provide defensive coverage outside of the circle.

Honestly, this is up there with the 'just kick it' kind of call outs.

Why would we want him receiving it on the outside if his disposal is shit? Better off running blokes like Bowie, Billings or Rivers through the guts if that’s Sparrow’s role.

And as I said, if we have a pure defensive player in our midfield, then we are playing a man down as we are essentially admitting that we will have 1 bloke not even going for the ball when the opposition has them all going for the ball.

I'm sorry, I don't have time to explain football to you tonight.
