He is everything we hoped Ryan would be, takes marks down the line offers a good target, gives Nank a chop out.
Some perspective would be nice on this one though
Sims was a Top 30 pick in one of the strongest & deepest 1st rounds in years
Ryan was Pick 40 at the height of Covid in 2020 where only 59 players were taken in the entire draft and even then, he wasn't on the radar of too many when he was taken.

The thing with Ryan, on top of being taken with an entirely speculative pick as you point out, is there are things he can do that are AFL level. He is a great kick for a ruck. And when he does get hitouts he normally directs them well. These are no doubt things the recruiters saw in him. What they were probably hoping for was he would become a lot stronger in the core to allow him to stand up to AFL level rucks and key defenders. It hasn't happened yet and probably won't now, sadly. He looks destined to be a very good ruck/forward one level below AFL footy.

Sims as you would expect for the reasons you gave, is on a different level. He is good on the ground and in the air and looks surprisingly comfortable with the ball in hand in transition play. And he can supply some pressure.

Is Tom Sims a midfielder???

Like better mark than Cripps.

Luke Jackson is being used as a midfielder while Freo has Sean Darcy in the ruck.

Sims is shorter, just, than Jackson and seems to have good poise and balance when low for a tall guy

Sims seems to have a nice neat kick for a big guy, how are his smarts, better than a ruckman?

to me Simms is a bit like Gawn but not as tall. but seems good around the ground. kick it to Sims, you get a contest minimum, it is a interesting dynamic

Aerially Simms could dominate midfielders, what are his handballs like?? does not seem like a idiot.

I watched bits and pieces of the GWS match. looking at a replay now, to me Simms was a point of difference. two things, marking strength not quite Stewart Lowie, and great mobility for a big guy. his kicking around the ground not to bad either, kicking seemed genuinely acceptable, he is a very interesting proposition because to me, what he brought to our dynamic threw the opposition out like a Blicavs or Cameron of the cats

he covers the ground well.

imagine playing him as a centre emphasis on marking but see how he develops, love how he competes. he has great balance for a big guy that moves. If Simms works in the midfield as part of a group dynamic that would spin opposition teams out

He said on TT that if he could have any number at the club he'd take #19. Hopefully our next Lynch then
Nah he could be Richmond's next Koutafides or nearly

he has unusual attributes, plenty to work with, I wanted him in the draft and I am glad we got him. could be the biggest steal of the lot.

looking a his draft profile, says he is from a athletics background. does not have to be an absolute gut runner with his other traits but curious to see what his engine is like especially when Gawn is a freak for his size running around. reads like a bit of a late developer so he could a lot more upside

if he can get a tank maybe put him near a wing like Richo

to me, this guy is the most imposing marking threat on the ground for Richmond around the ground. Not drawing comparison with Lynch and his forward craft just around the ground with his added mobility. I reckon, Simms on the ground on the weekend with his marking and other input lifted the team no doubt, the team had more belief and confidence and possibly more energy. Nank is obviously a very good mark mark, but this guy is more mobile than Nank and covers the ground better and quicker. It is all potential but the sky could be the limit for Sims barring injuries etc. I am just so bloody glad he is on our team and we picked him in the draft. We have a lot of good backs and forwards developing with size, Smillie we still have to figure out but he has so much going for him he will fit in somewhere, if Simms can make it around the ground it helps balance our team out, I just love what he brings to the table and with his mobility and hands, kick it to Sims, even if in doubt, is just a team lifter for us with his competitiveness. He has always brought his competitiveness it is is just a great sign for his future and how things may develop for him and us.

For example Prestia with his lack of height does not have to worry about the aerial with Simms nearby, Not that Nank did not have clear impact but as a bigger body Simms covers the ground better, and Simms could be better on the ground. Same goes for Sonsies and our other smaller mids. Even Hopper and Taranto is aided by Simms marking presence. Theoretically, Nank still plays obviously as main ruck but Nank can help the forward line or backline in the heavier stuff while Simms could cause havoc between the arcs as well as drifting into them when it suits. Love to see his development anyway, he is not a normal mid anyway even if played like a mid, our team would need to use him differently with a emphasis on the aerial and have other running support nearby generally to aid the dynamic
