That's assuming this will ensure success...

Nothing is guaranteed to ensure success.

Just because we support a particular stance, doesn't mean we have to agree with everything that may or may not be aimed at supporting that stance. That's the kind of logic that sees AFL rule changes every year.

Well, no, they're two fairly different scenarios.

I particularly liked this line:

"People who want to whinge about the team's performances cannot now complain when Australian hierarchy take proactive measures to ensure the success the public demands."

The public's demanding competitive cricket though, not the timely submission of team essays.

Most of the criticism appears to be that it's over a minor indiscretion, and while that may be true, whose to say that they'll show any more discipline and team-orientation when it really matters.
The problem is that team and player morale does not improve from heavy handed and unprecedented punishments. It festers a culture of unfairness.

A talking to or minor punishment would have been more appropriate as well as conveying to the team that this will now become an expectation of their work and harsher penalties will start applying.

Whats that got to do with saying that you'd only take a test win but only if you performed.
If I misunderstood your post, quite probably very little......:)

Clarke (or at least his ghostwriter on his behalf) has stated that this is not the first indiscretion.

The issue is discipline. How many good teams lack discipline?
Hardly any, unless you are so over-run with talent that you can get away with it.

And we are hardly in that boat.

A fair point, but alternatively you could argue ill discipline permeating through the group is equally as toxic to performance, and that swift and harsh action was needed to ensure it is stamped out. Especially in a guy like Pattinson who is going to be crucial to Australia for the next decade.

Could be like Lyon suspending Walters.

Everything is fine!

He was going to leave anyway...

Watson said to be thinking of retiring, i really can't see any way for watson to plays tests again under the clarke/arthur leadership so it's probably the right move.

Watson can retire and be a roaming 20/20 specialist and the test team can move on without him, without his bowling his value to the test side had dipped anyway.

This was not an isolated incident. As a team over the past couple of months we have not reached the standards expected of us as Australian cricketers.

No shit.

But is that because we've been crap on the field, or are there other issues we aren't being made aware of?

if there are other serious off field breaches then they should just tell us what they were and who committed them and when.

if it's a proven pattern of poor behavior and the players knew they were on thin ice any sympathy they are receiving will disappear.

Time to send in Bailey to replace Watto and help support the leadership team?

I am firmly in this camp. Rather than look for the next messiah (Agar, Cummins, etc), we need to realise that what we lack most of all is leadership. Particularly now that Hussey and Ponting have gone. And if you CBF sending a text message to the coach then I don't care how good you are - see you later.
