This might seem like a bit of an irrelevant topic, but does anyone know why a team gets "4 points" for a win and "2 points" for a draw?

Why not make it 2 for a win, and one point for a draw. Havn't the AFL ever heard of "lowest common denominator"?

It's just one of those strange things that make no sense. It goes against all logic. Why don't they just reveret to the lowest common denominator, just to make things "neat and tidy" and "sensible"? It doesn't really matter I suppose, but it is just one of those annoying little pet peeves.

Could you imagine all the cliche books that would have to be rewritten if this rule changed?

"Well we are just happy to get the 2 points"

"This is a four point game" (as opposed to eight)

etc

The logic of making it 4 points for a win, is the same as making it 120 points for a win and 60 for a draw. It really should be the lowest common denominator when you think about it.

Oh well. It's a misrtake, but it's a mistake I can live with.

How can you be prepared to live with it? It is an outrage? What type of sporting organisation does not employ the lowest common denomenator in structuring of their league tables? Ladies and Gentlemen of Big Footy unite. We must take a stand. I think Wayne Jackson owes us answers? I think we should bring back Ross Oakley! I think Robert DiPierdomenico has a really long name! I ride in the front seat of a taxi and I believe Australia brews the beer in the world!
Thankyou, I am glad I have finally found an outlet to get this off my chest.

Clearly just another example of where the SANFL is the far superior league !!!!!

There had of course been a suggestion that when the 2 SA teams play each other they would play for 2 points....in keeping with SA traditions !!!!!

Why can't we just leave at least one thing the way it is. There is nothing better than saying "we are just happy to get the four points".

Surprise surprise ...

I actually agree with you, Dan. In fact, if you decide to make a campaign of it, I'll be on your side.

Basically ... I think the 4 points for a win and 2 for a draw (rather than 2 for a win and 1 for a draw) can be explained by one simple factor ... a factor very prevelant in the football industry.

Shit for brains ...

A simple case of pure unadulterated shit for brains.

That's because we are used to saying it. If we had always said "we are just happy to get the two points" you would have said the same thing.

ODN

no you got it arse about mate....

Vitorian teams were half as good so they had to give them double the points to keep them competitive.

I never pau attention to premiership points anyway.

I always like to talk about win-loss ratio instead. So instead of saying something like "48 points should be enough to get us into the 8"

I'll usually say

"12-10 should be enough to get us into the 8"

However Dan25 is dead right, I've always thought it a little bit daft to say the least !

Ive always wondered what the actual point of having "premiership points" is anyway- surely it easy enough to seperate teams by the their win-loss-draw count, and then use % after that.

The 4 points may have something to do with winning 4 quarters of football!

Saying that made me consider having a system where you get points for a win then bonus points for each quarter you win. This might add interest to one sided games.

I think the 4 points for a win and 2 points for a draw sounds reasonable. At least they don't give away points for teams losing matches

actualy, Thats a pretty good idea.

You get 4 points for winning the game, and a bonus point for each quarter you win.

That way if a team is down by 100 points at quarter time, they will probably try and remain competitive in the final quarter to salvage a bit of pride.

Dan,
You got it right the first time - it's irrelevant.
You are seriously anal, you know that ?
