Player Watch #40 Tyler Sonsie - Re-Signed For 2026

It's funny the random debates that spring up around here but I'll join in.
Both have their moments but neither consistent enough so far.
One is mostly inside while the other is mostly outside.
Both could play as the lowest paid 21st/22nd type role players in a gun team imo.
If it's one or the other I'll take Sonsie as we have enough inside mids.
Dow or Sonz? Get them to hold hands and skip out the door and keep going. No future in either of them.

Which one is Wings??

Amazing the stuff you read.

Anyway IMHO, if you look 3 years ahead and assume they will continue to develop - who will be more valuable or will both be gone?

Dow is likely to get better, but is limited by his physicality - he just ain't a big guy. His kicking isn't great, but his handballs and inside movement are very good. So Dow's top end is roughly a decent B grade mid who needs to play inside, but won't be a monster so must play with big bodied mid/s. OK, so 2nd / 3rd rotation mid. Good to have but not ever going to be anything than a role player.

Sonsie, if he keeps progressing, can be a relatively high possession count player who moves the ball quickly and accurately. Unlikely to ever be a monster gritty type. But, he could end up as a very useful part of our ball movement and if he improves his physicality he can be soldi there. So (once again, assuming he keeps improving) Sonsie can be a valuable player to us, more than a role player.

Which is more likely to keep improving, I don't know. until now, from the outside, Dow has given his all and has had a great attitude. Sonsie has not given his all and has at times had a perceived poor attitude.

So >
Dow is worth keeping because he can fill a role player hole. If we recruit more mids then why keep Dow? His future depends on our recruitment to me.

Sonsie is worth keeping if his attitude is good and we believe he can keep stepping it up. Not much related to recruitment, more the assessment of his mentality.

Don't really think these guys will be there in a few years time unless we start seeing some consistent form from both.... To me both are just stocking fillers but that can change just think the problem with Sonz is between the ears and if Dow can work on his physical frame we might have a decent player but time is running out , both have represented the club we love and I'm sure they have given their all but it's not enough , would love to be here in 8 months time saying they proved me wrong....

Post of the thread.

And where exactly are we "Going" next season anyway?

We will be bottom 3 regardless of Dow and Sons.
Well, 3 will be an improvement, no, yes? The longer players like them are in the team, the future looks bleak. When you see so many pages of them compared to a Vlaustin well, that tells me something is not right, taking away my eyes out of the equation.

Sure maybe previously but he’s made billions from bitcoin in the last 12mths so that’s irrelevant now
Is that the copin that he once said were criminally created to destroy world economies, and when in power, he will do everything to bring them all to face justice.

Sonsie can play wing, hf or midfield. Dow can only play midfield.

We already have Hotton, Smillie, McAuliffe and Lalor who need midfield time, plus pick 2, pick 3 and Kellaway incoming....

Dow literally played wing this year and did it miles better than Sonsie. Plus he isn’t scared of his own shadow.

If we are serious however delist both

Not sure either is good but in fairness to Sonsie Dow has been in system 2 more years and is 2 years older and Dow probably only started looking half decent this year. I reckon whether we keep them depends on what draft picks we end up with or if someone like Ross is traded out. No point delisting and replacing with third and fourth rounders in this year’s draft. Fact we are keeping Prestia is probably bad sign for one of them

I like the cut of your jib LOTW.

You earn a fortune, know more about everything than anybody else and do a lot of trash talking. Gives me a good laugh when I need one.

Funny GIF

Base on the amount of time he spends on here LOTW is more likely to be on a disability pension and living with his Mother

Purely and simply, Sonsie would not be in the AFL side if Lalor, Mcauliffe or Dow were not injured. He got lucky.

Sonsie always does well at VFL level, earns a recall and then when he gets extended game time looks complacent. For a player that has been fighting for his career this year, he doesn't look like he has any urgency. Maybe it's just who he is as a player, but with what we have seen at exposed AFL level, Dow has contributed more and looked solid before his injury. He has more strings to his bow than Sonsie. Sonsie has been backed in time and time again and for a player with supposedly elite skills, misses targets far too often. His defensive efforts also leave a lot to be desired.

Dow is superior to Sonsie in nearly every single stat/metric that can be measured.
Which one is leading score involvements?
