Bone stress injury
Sad news, he looks promising, thought he was close to getting a game in the big league.

Hopefully a hot spot instead of a stress fracture and proceeding with caution. At least it isn't plantar fasciitis

A stress reaction is a hell of a lot more serious than plantar fasciitis.

What is the difference between a hot spot and a stress fracture?

As Merc said, it's the precursor to a stress fracture. It's visible on an MRI and it's 'uncomfortable' but you can generally warm it up and run on it so if it was a GF you'd probably play through it. If you pick it up at that point you can manage your way through it over a few weeks to a month if it's not too advanced.

If you leave it, then it'll eventually start to properly fracture which means the recovery period is a lot longer, but the pain is also a lot worse. Depending on your pain threshold and desperation you might push through it for a time, but ultimately it'll just get worse and you extend the time to recover.
